Book excerpt: The book discusses one of the major challenges in agriculture which is delivery of cultivate produce to the end consumers with best possible price and quality. Currently all over the world, it is found that around 50% of the farm produce never reaches the end consumer due to wastage and suboptimal prices. The authors present solutions to reduce the transport cost, predictability of prices on the past data analytics and the current market conditions, and number of middle hops and agents between the farmer and the end consumer using IoT-based solutions. Again, the demand by consumption of agricultural products could be predicted quantitatively; however, the variation of harvest and production by the change of farm's cultivated area, weather change, disease and insect damage, etc., could be difficult to be predicted, so that the supply and demand of agricultural products has not been controlled properly. To overcome, this edited book designed the IoT-based monitoring system to analyze crop environment and the method to improve the efficiency of decision making by analyzing harvest statistics. The book is also useful for academicians working in the areas of climate changes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Quarterly Journal of Agriculture and Science, 1846, Vol. 3 Complexity, then, so far from being an objection to the use of that function of the mind which is termed theorizing, it is upon those very subjects that we shall derive the most advan tage - and which needs it the most. It is this view of the subject which induces us to Offer to our readers the theory of agriculture, which we have been led to ad opt - views founded partly upon the experiments and observations of others, and partly upon facts which we ourselves have observed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial agriculture is generally characterized as either the salvation of a growing, hungry, global population or as socially and environmentally irresponsible. Despite elements of truth in this polarization, it fails to focus on the particular vulnerabilities and potentials of industrial agriculture. Both representations obscure individual farmers, their families, their communities, and the risks they face from unpredictable local, national, and global conditions: fluctuating and often volatile production costs and crop prices; extreme weather exacerbated by climate change; complicated and changing farm policies; new production technologies and practices; water availability; inflation and debt; and rural community decline. Yet the future of industrial agriculture depends fundamentally on farmers’ decisions. In Defense of Farmers illuminates anew the critical role that farmers play in the future of agriculture and examines the social, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities of industrial agriculture, as well as its adaptations and evolution. Contextualizing the conversations about agriculture and rural societies within the disciplines of sociology, geography, economics, and anthropology, this volume addresses specific challenges farmers face in four countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, and the United States. By concentrating on countries with the most sophisticated production technologies capable of producing the largest quantities of grains, soybeans, and animal proteins in the world, this volume focuses attention on the farmers whose labors, decision-making, and risk-taking throw into relief the implications and limitations of our global industrial food system. The case studies here acknowledge the agency of farmers and offer ways forward in the direction of sustainable agriculture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Quarterly Journal of Agriculture and Science, 1846, Vol. 3 With this number we present our patrons with a fine steel engraving of His Excellency Silas Wright, Governor of the State of New York. Tn this act we by no means wish our friends to infer that we are treading, or intend to tread, upon political ground. The engraving is given in obedience to the desire which is manifested among the great body of the people to possess works of this character; and in obedience to this desire, we intend hereafter, should the Journal be sustained, to embellish it in this manner. Mr. Wright has now attained that period of life when the judgment and intellect have reached the highest stage of development - when the physical, intellectual and moral man, sustain and invigorate each other - when the hand to execute is strong and unfaultering - the capacity to devise the greatest, and that of doing good, the widest. It is at this period that the character becomes national, and when what a man says and does lives the longest in posterity, and remains a monument of his folly or wisdom, when his earlier or later acts will be forgotten. It also proposes novel, environmentally friendly solutions that are based on integrated information from such fields as agronomy, soil science, molecular biology, chemistry, toxicology, ecology, economics and the social sciences.Coverage examines ways to produce food and energy in a sustainable way for humans and their children. Inside, readers will find articles that explore climate change, increasing food and fuel prices, poor-nation starvation, rich-nation obesity, water pollution, soil erosion, fertility loss, pest control and biodiversity depletion. Instead of solving problems using the classical painkiller approach, which seeks to limit negative impacts, sustainable agriculture treats challenges at their source. Because most societal issues are in fact intertwined, global, and fast-developing, sustainable agriculture will bring solutions that have the potential to build a more peaceful world. This book will help scientists, decision-makers, professors, farmers and politicians build safer agriculture, energy and food systems for future generations.
