Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican Southland It is with a feeling of deep satisfaction that I lay down my pen upon having translated from the original Persian the last line of Kamar al-shimas' great work on southern Mex ico; for not only is the field one hitherto uncovered by any writer, but the work itself is of such exceptional value, the author's insight into local conditions is so profound, that in making the translation I can not but think I have conferred a special favor upon all lovers of Mexico. As to the form of translation, I have thought it in the best interests of all concerned that it be phrased in the most approved modern diction, in a few places only, where the ex pression was peculiarly happy, preserving the antique phrase ology of the venerable author. In these few instances I feel sure a discriminating public will approve my action. Not much need be said on behalf of the original work, which speaks for itself. The field, as has been noted, is in large measure a new one. While the American reading public is annually deluged with a fresh assortment of books upon Mexico, these books are invariably either limited to the north ern or central parts of the republic, or are superficial accounts of the whole country written by some globe trotter who has seen much and noted little. Only occasionally are as much as a dozen pages devoted to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. On the other hand the work of our master deals exclusively with southern Mexico. Nor is this its only merit; the author's style is in pleasing contrast with the flamboyant, would-be witty style which characterizes so many travel books of the day. His words are packed with information and no attempt is made to hide a paucity of matter beneath a superabundance of phrases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atlantic Pacific Ship-Railway: Across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico, Considered Commercially, Politically Constructively The purpose of the Author in the following pages is to present, in a concise yet comprehensive form, the commer cial and political reasons for an interoceanic communication between the Atlantic and Pacific at the Isthmus of Tehuan tepec in Mexico also to bring together the more important facts that prove the practicability and the economy of a ship-railway. The previous discussions, while complete in detail, have been partial and fragmentary. The writer has had exceptional advantages in investigating this subject; he made examinations on the Isthmus and the surveys of its harbors in 1880, and has since that time conducted, through very efficient and experienced engineers, complete topographical surveys of the Isthmus, on which the plans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fresh-Water Fishes of Mexico North of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Vol. 5 The following paper is based largely on two collections Of fishes, the first being made by the writer and Mr. F. E. Lutz, Of the Carnegie Station for Experimental Evolution, Cold Spring Harbor, in the spring of 1901, and the other by the writer during February, March, April, and May, 1903. Through the courtesy of Dr. Barton W. Evermann, assistant in charge of Scientific Inquiry, United States Bureau Of Fisheries, I have had at my disposal two small collections made by Mr. E. W. Nelson, one from the Rio Balsas and the other from the Rio Soto la Marina. Dr. W. L. Tower, Of the University Of Chicago, also placed at my disposal a collection of fishes made by him at Rio Verde, San Luis Potosi. In January, 190 3, in Washing ton, D. C., Dr. Richard Rathbun, Assistant Secretary Of the Smith somian Institution, and Mr. B. A. Bean, Assistant Curator Of fishes U. S. National Museum, permitted me to examine a large collection which formed a portion Of the Mexican fish exhibit at the Columbian Exposition. I have included only a small portion Of this collection in the following list because of the doubtful character Of the localities given. TO have included the entire collection would have very much confused our study of geographical distribution. An account Of the collection made by Mr. F. E. Lutz and myself is published in Vol. III. Of the Zoological Series Of the Field Colum bian Museum, Pub. 65, pages 63 to 128, plates 14 to 31. The results Of the second expedition are (1903) included in this paper. Williams, Chief Engineer, Upon the Location of the Tehuantepec Railway and Carriage Road Across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec: With the Map and Profiles as Approved by the Government of Mexico, July 1st, 1870 As your instructions directed me to obtain as much additional information as possible, bearing on the subject of the railway across the Isthmus, I take occasion to say that, notwithstanding all that has been said and written about Tehuantepec, I do not think that the Isthmus has yet been fully described. In the first place a map should be made upon which can be laid down the coast and lateral railway lines which may be built to act as feeders to the main trunk line, across Tehuantepec; and in order to do this the plan should include on the west as much of the States of Vera Cruz and Oaxaca as will take in the cities of the same names; on the east, the States of Tobasco, Chiapas, and a portion of Guate mala bordering on the Pacific; upon such a map should be projected the following connecting or branch lines: First, a road should start at or in the neighborhood of Soledad, a station on the Vera Cruz and city of Mexico railroad, about twenty miles from the former city, and run down to the lagoons connecting with the harbor of Alvarado. This piece of road, which might be a branch of the Vera Cruz and city of Mexico railway, would be about thirty miles long, and, as I am informed, almost on a dead level the whole distance. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations in Relation to a Communication Between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec The idea of making a direct communication with the Pacific having taken possession of the minds of the people of the United States, it follows, as a matter of course, that it will be accomplished. As much capital, however, will have to be expended in effecting this project, it is of every importance that the route to be adopted should be selected with great care, and after a deliberate examination of the various routes proposed. The routes submitted to the public should be examined, not only in regard to their practicability and cost, but also in relation to their utility after being made: for it is clear that if the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are connected by a route judiciously selected, great results of a commercial, political, and moral nature must follow. It is very desirable, therefore, that every, information in relation to the different projects of connecting the two oceans should be brought to the notice of the public. There can be no doubt that the interests of the United States will require at least two roads - one by land, terminating at some well selected point in our possessions on the Pacific, and another across some part of the Isthmus which unites the two great divisions of America. This last may be considered the oceanic communication, and will be the one through which a large portion of the commerce of the world will pass; for a safe and commodious communication once opened, the rich and profitable trade with Asia will be entirely revolutionized, very much to the advantage of American capital and enterprise. It will possess the great merit, too, of being made at much lessexpense, and in much shorter time, than the land route - a point of great importance to the people and the government, in relation to their possessions on the Pacific. The interests of the people imperiously demand that some short communication should be established, with as little delay as is consistent with a careful examination of the several proposed routes. In this spirit the following pages are presented to the public, with the view of calling its attention to the route by the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The statements as to its topography, climate, and productions, are taken from the report of a survey of that Isthmus, executed under the direction of Senor Gaetano Moro. Wherever it was possible, the statements are given in the very words of Mr. Moro. It is to be regretted that the scope of the present publication does not allow more liberal extracts from his very interesting report for all that he has written is worthy of being read.
