Book excerpt: This report presents proposed standards for teaching internship programs. The internship standards are intended to be embedded in a state's teacher licensing system. The year-long (paid) internship is simultaneously the last year of formal teacher preparation, the first year of (supervised) teaching, and one requirement for the unrestricted teaching license. An intern would have to satisfactorily complete the internship before taking the final examination to receive a teaching license. The report is intended to provide guidance to teaching standards boards as well as colleges of education, school districts, and others concerned with improving the practical preparation of teachers. The discussion is presented in four sections: (1) "The Case for a Supervised Teaching Internship"; (2) "Internships in the Licensed Professions"; (3) "Standards for an Internship Program"; and (4) "Implementing the Internship: The Value of Clinical Schools." The appendices provide examples of evaluation forms; an extract from "Minnesota's Vision for Teacher Education: Stronger Standards, New Partnerships"; the Code of Ethics for Minnesota Teachers; and detailed descriptions of internship programs in four licensed professions--engineering, psychology, architecture, and medicine. A bibliography completes the volume. (JD)

Book excerpt: In Practical Knowledge in Teacher Education, expert contributors from across Asia and Europe explore and reflect upon the innovation and creativity in teacher education programs. Specific focus is given to the internships that provide students an opportunity for intensive, hands-on experience in schools. Different approaches to internship provide comprehensive information on a diversity of ways of organising and managing internship programmes within teacher education courses, and equip future teachers with real-world knowledge within a global context. This book focuses on approaches to internship in teacher education programmes in Europe and Asia. It explores the idea that a consideration of the rich variation in approaches and experience across Eurasia will foreground critical aspects of successful internship. Each chapter provides a different focus from Asian and European perspectives on aspects of the teacher education practicum or internship, and what can be learned from school placement. This book is an invaluable resource for all those involved in teacher education, educational policy and anyone who has a stake in ensuring effective teacher education for the 21st century. It offers a far reaching overview of the teacher internship phase across a number of countries, and contributes to identifying distinctive features of teacher education in European and Asian universities.

Book Synopsis The Lived Experiences of Filipinx American Teachers in the U.S. by : Eleonor G. Castillo

This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text offers a hermeneutic phenomenological exploration of the lived experiences of Filipinx American teachers in U.S. schools, classrooms, and colleges. By drawing on one-on-one dialogues, group discussion, and reflective writing, the text identifies racial, cultural, and linguistic barriers that members of this minority group have faced in their training and practice as educators. The text questions the underrepresentation of Filipinx Americans among U.S. teaching staff and identifies causes both within the Filipino community and via external factors, including the absence of Filipino culture in curricula, as well as a lack of peer support in the development of Asian American teacher identities. This timely volume highlights the need to expand diversity teacher education to create a more racially diverse and inclusive workforce. Offering rich insight into the experiences of Filipinx American teachers, this volume will be of interest to students, scholars, and researchers drawn to studies of multicultural education, as well as teacher education.
