Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Integrity of the Yoga Darśana centers on the thought of Patañjali, the great exponent of the authoritative and Classical Yoga school of Hinduism and the reputed author of the Yoga-Sutras. In this textual, historical, and interpretive study, Whicher offers a plausible and innovative reading of the "intention" of the Yoga-Sutras, namely that Yoga does not advocate the abandonment or condemnation of the world, but rather supports a stance that enables one to live more fully in the world without being enslaved by worldly identification. Challenging and correcting misperceptions about Yoga drawn by traditional and modern interpretations of the Yoga-Sutras, the author argues for a fresh vision of the spiritual potential present in this seminal text, thereby contributing to our understanding of the meaning and practical relevance of Yoga and its reception today.

Book Synopsis Yoga, the Body, and Embodied Social Change by : Beth Berila
Download or read book Yoga, the Body, and Embodied Social Change written by Beth Berila and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yoga, the Body, and Embodied Social Change is the first collection to gather together prominent scholars on yoga and the body. Using an intersectional lens, the essays examine yoga in the United States as a complex cultural phenomenon that reveals racial, economic, gendered, and sexual politics of the body. From discussions of the stereotypical yoga body to analyses of pivotal court cases, Yoga, the Body, and Embodied Social Change examines the sociopolitical tensions of contemporary yoga. Because so many yogic spaces reflect the oppressive nature of many other public spheres, the essays in this collection also examine what needs to change in order for yoga to truly live up to its liberatory potential, from the blogosphere around Black women’s health to the creation of queer and trans yoga classes to the healing potential of yoga for people living with chronic illness or trauma. While many of these conversations are emerging in the broader public sphere, few have made their way into academic scholarship. This book changes all that. The essays in this anthology interrogate yoga as it is portrayed in the media, yoga spaces, and yoga as it is integrated in education, the law, and concepts of health to examine who is included and who is excluded from yoga in the West. The result is a thoughtful analysis of the possibilities and the limitations of yoga for feminist social transformation.
Book Synopsis Love in the Religions of the World by : Paul Caringella
Download or read book Love in the Religions of the World written by Paul Caringella and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of comparative religion is no longer a matter merely for those interested in religion – it is a matter of concern for everybody. For irrespective of whether one believes in God, religion is a major characteristic of identity. And in the post 9/11 world, every educated person is aware of how important it is to understand what others believe. This collection of essays by international scholars emerged from an intense and powerful dialogue at the University of Hong Kong about love in the major religions of the world. Eschewing the comforting, but ultimately erroneous and dangerous idea that all religions believe more or less the same thing, each essay examines the role and nature of love in a major religion of the world. It is an invaluable guide for students, teachers and the general reader wanting to cut through the morass of doctrinal differences and emphases in the world’s religions. It also makes an important contribution to the urgent issue of dialogue amongst faiths and cultures.

They do not understand the philosophical set of beliefs on which it is based. In The Patanjali Sutra and Its Spiritual Practice, author Tony Nguyen broadens the understanding to create a more complete experience. Nguyen focuses on the philosophy of Maharishi Patanjali, the great expounder of the authoritative classical yoga school of thought, or darsana, of Hinduism and the author of the Yoga Sutras. Nguyen also responds to the relationship between theory and practice in the classical yoga system. The Patanjali Sutra and Its Spiritual Practicediscusses: the basic philosophical view of Patanjalis Yoga Sutras, focusing on explanation and interpretation of the relationship between purusa and prakrti; the samkhya and yoga systems, which are related to Patanjalis yoga doctrines and the similarities and differences between them; and spiritual practice. Nguyen offers a host of information to help practitioners enhance their spiritual journey through yoga.
Book Synopsis Perspectives of Reality by : Jeaneane D. Fowler
Download or read book Perspectives of Reality written by Jeaneane D. Fowler and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beginning with the foundational visions of the Vedas, Dr. Fowler examines each tradition's vision of reality in a systematic way that focuses on how it understands the self, the highest reality, causality, knowledge, and liberation. Because the six major Hindu philosophical traditions--Mimamsa, Samkhya, Yoga, Nyaya, Vaisesika, and Vedanta--complement each other in important ways as well as compete with each other in some ways, this systematic comparison of the fundamental topics of each tradition enables us to see the beautiful tapestry of the Hindu way of life that these traditions have created. This book offers the reader who wishes to understand the philosophical basis of Hinduism a clear and comprehensive introduction. It also provides a solid foundation for the reader who wishes to go on to advanced and detailed studies of any of the Hindu philosophical traditions." --From the foreword by John M. Koller, author, The Indian Way and Asian Philosophies

Book excerpt: Today yoga is a thoroughly globalised phenomenon. Yoga has taken the world by storm and is even seeing renewed popularity in India. Both in India and abroad, adults, children and teenagers are practicing yoga in diverse settings; gyms, schools, home, work, yoga studios and temples. The yoga diaspora began well over a hundred years ago and we continue to see new manifestations and uses of Yoga in the modern world. As the first of its kind this collection draws together cutting edge scholarship in the field, focusing on the theory and practice of yoga in contemporary times. Offering a range of perspectives on yoga's contemporary manifestations, it maps the movement, development and consolidation of yoga in global settings. The collection features some of the most well-known authors within the field and newer voices. The contributions span a number of disciplines in the humanities, including, anthropology, Philosophy, Studies in Religion and Asian studies, offering a range of entry points to the issues involved in the study of the subject. As such, is of use to those involved in academic scholarship, as well as to the growing number of yoga practitioners who seek a deeper account of the origin and significance of the techniques and traditions they are engaging with. It will also-and perhaps most of all-speak to the growing numbers of 'scholar-practitioners' who straddle these two realms. Download or read book Yoga Traveling written by Beatrix Hauser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on yoga’s transcultural dissemination in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In the course of this process, the term “yoga” has been associated with various distinctive blends of mental and physical exercises performed in order to achieve some sort of improvement, whether understood in terms of esotericism, fitness, self-actualization, body aesthetics, or health care. The essays in this volume explore some of the turning points in yoga’s historico-spatial evolution and their relevance to its current appeal. The authors focus on central motivations, sites, and agents in the spread of posture-based yoga as well as on its successive (re-)interpretation and diversification, addressing questions such as: Why has yoga taken its various forms? How do time and place influence its meanings, social roles, and associated experiences? How does the transfer into new settings affect the ways in which yogic practice has been conceptualized as a system, and on what basis is it still identified as (Indian) yoga? The initial section of the volume concentrates on the re-evaluation of yoga in Indian and Western settings in the first half of the twentieth century. The following chapters link global discourses to particular local settings and explore meaning production at the micro-social level, taking Germany as the focal site. The final part of the book focuses on yoga advertising and consumption across national, social, and discursive boundaries, taking a closer look at transnational and deterritorialized yoga markets, as well as at various classes of mobile yoga practitioners.
Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Yoga & Psyche Conference (2014) by : Gabriel Axel
Download or read book Proceedings of the Yoga & Psyche Conference (2014) written by Gabriel Axel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a selection of papers that were presented at the Yoga & Psyche Conference: The Future of Psychology, held in San Francisco, USA, in April 2014. This was the first academic conference in the Western world focused on the integration of Western psychology and yoga, and attracted an international presence from over 15 countries. With the increasingly widespread permeation of Eastern philosophy into Western society and the spread of Western values around the world, the time was ripe for a deeper investigation into the intersection of these subjects. This collection of articles serves as a foundational text for an emerging field. This inquiry begins to integrate the vast context of yoga – which includes ethics, the study of canonical texts, self-inquiry, breath management, physical postures and meditation – with Western psychological theory and clinical practice, including the breakthroughs in somatic psychology and trauma research, and insights from neuroscience. This book will appeal to psychologists, yoga teachers and practitioners, neuroscientists and researchers, sociologists, scholars of comparative religion and Indic studies, physicians and health practitioners interested in complementary medicine, and those interested in joining the conversation of a new field of investigation that integrates the perennial wisdom of yoga with the practice of modern Western psychology.
