Jeddah has grown since 1972 and now, in 2013, some 24 major pieces are being restored and relocated by the Abdul Latif Jameel Foundation and the Municipality of Jeddah in a new Open Air Museum on the sea front, known as the Corniche. This book questions and analyses “patterns” relating to the cultural, social, and environmental particularities of Jeddah, with special attention paid to the effect of gender segregation in the city’s urban configuration. It discusses the extension that has been undertaken through testing a concept from the urban design theory of the West (the United States and Canada) and applying it to an Islamic city to find patterns in four different scales, which form the basis of the investigation (body, building, street, and city). Empirical methods have been used in the context of historical Jeddah, through which patterns are investigated using different approaches for the different scales. The book aims to explore the meaning of threshold spaces in old Jeddah. Furthermore, it shows that there are eighteen patterns of threshold spaces in the old town: patterns that are solely related to this specific case study, as well as modified patterns to the ones explored by Christopher Alexander. This book shall allow not only a better understanding of the relationship between housing and the historical city but also an exploration of the role of the threshold space in shaping the old city of Jeddah. Characterised by an emphasis on privacy protection through high enclosures, gates, blinds, and tinted windows, "New Islamic Urbanism" constitutes for some an important element of piety. For others, it enables alternative ways of life, banned social practices, as well as the formation of publics and counterpublics. Tracing the emergence of New Islamic Urbanism, this book sheds new light on the changing conceptions of public and private space in the Saudi city of Jiddah in the twentieth century. It challenges the widespread assumption that the public sphere is exclusively male in Muslim contexts such as Saudi Arabia, where women's public visibility is limited by the wearing of a veil and strict rules of gender segregation. Stefan Maneval provides a nuanced account of the negotiation of public and private spaces by men and women in Saudia Arabia and shows that the rigid segregation regime for which the country is known serves to constrain the movements of men and women alike.

According to the latest World Health Organization statistics, 36.5% of Saudi Arabians are obese and around 31% of the population suffers from hypertension. This is particularly so in the car-dominated city of Jeddah. Currently, the amount of Public Open Space (POS) provided in Jeddah is less than 2m2 per person in the entire city and less than 1m2 per person in more than half of Jeddah's planned residential districts. This provision is less than the World Health Organization's recommendation of 9m2 per person. The lack of official POS in the city has led to the use of many inappropriate and hazard forms of open space such as: large traffic islands, vacant blocks, local streets, the undercrofts of Jeddah's bypasses, and major roadsides.

The production of history is premised on the selective erasure of certain pasts and the artifacts that stand witness to them. From the elision of archival documents to the demolition of sacred and secular spaces, each act of destruction is also an act of state building. Following the 1991 Gulf War, political elites in Saudi Arabia pursued these dual projects of historical commemoration and state formation with greater fervor to enforce their postwar vision for state, nation, and economy. Seeing Islamist movements as the leading threat to state power, they sought to de-center religion from educational, cultural, and spatial policies.
