Book excerpt: This study focused on the multi-faceted process of leadership identity development through an-in dpeth analyis of the life experiences of students involved in Greek life at a mid-size researched institution in the Souther United States region. Research was conducted within the framerwork of the Leadership Identity Development (LID) model authored by Komives, Owen, Longerbem, Mainella, and Osteen (2005). Of particular interest was the degree to which the data upheld the presence of the four development influences of the LID model : 1) peer influences 2) meaningful involvement 3) reflective learning and 4) adult influence.Framed by an understanding of college student development and emerging explanatations of the process of leadership identity development, the qualitiative study examined the influence of fraternity and sorority membership on the leadership identity development of college students. The findings derived from semi-structure interviews with fraternity and sorority leaders illustrate the context and cultures in which the particapants develop an identity as an leader. In addition, the study describes the processes and experiences that facilitate or hinder development.Nominated by student affairs professionals, twelve undergraduate fraternity and sorority members at one southern U.S. research institution particapated in the study. The findings suggest organizational factors and meaningful relationships support leader identity development ofr fraternity and sorority members. The study also suggests advancing practical applications of the theoretical construct of leadership identity development. The study concludes with recommendations for program development, practice, and further research. .

Book excerpt: In the wake of the #AbolishGreekLife and other calls for racial justice, the role of identity development also becomes ever increasingly important as we consider how to make the sorority/fraternity more inclusive for our students. In the end, it may really be the power of inclusion on college campuses that leads to many of the educational goals that we yearn for in student growth: the formal and informal social interactions, bonded in reflective learning, that help build social and academic success. In this we can celebrate together, especially those of us who have romanticized so many “bright college years.” This text is a response to a call for existential exploration as an attempt to critically revivify our understanding of the sorority/fraternity experience as it contributes specifically to students’ identity development and learning. The text is grouped around centering their experiences through three A’s: Amplifying Voice, Affirming Identity, and Advancing Belonging to highlight the identity experiences of the diverse spectrum of fraternity and sorority members across the intersections of identity so often excluded from the literature. Chapters in this text attempt to foreground how the fraternity/sorority experience explicitly contributes to these areas of student development across multiple identities including race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, social class, and ability. Authors critically interrogate systems of oppressions that subjugate marginality from those with intersectional identities to recognize the larger challenges facing the sorority/fraternity movement as an attempt to disrupt these systems to better identify influences on identity development. ENDORSEMENTS "Pietro Sasso and associates are leading a game-changing conversation about the impact of fraternity and sorority communal experiences on student identity. Pietro Sasso and the contributing authors of this robust text successfully endeavor to inform practice through critical analysis, framing important questions, and offering pragmatic solutions that are timely, relevant, and practical in both the academy and the fraternal system. This book is a "must-read" for anyone seeking to understand or have a relevant impact on the intersections of sense of belonging, identity development, and sorority & fraternity life." — Jason L. Meriwether, Campbellsville University "In their most recent book examining contemporary sorority and fraternity life, Sasso, Biddix, and Miranda have curated discerning chapters that expand existing scholarship by exploring the impact of fraternity and sorority membership on identity development, belonging, and student voice through critical lenses. This book should be on the bookshelf of all higher education administrators and faculty." — Gavin Henning, New England College

Book excerpt: Despite negative connotations and empirical evidence to support detrimental aspects of fraternity and sorority membership, decades of nationally representative data show students remain interested in joining. This monograph reconsiders the value of membership, based on scholarly research published since 1996 in the following ways: Through identifying behavioral, psychological and educational outcomes of fraternity/sorority involvement By differentiating outcomes between and among organizations Through recommending implications for policy and practice based on research. Findings revealed an unexpected amount of scholarly research interest on fraternity and sorority involvement, and membership correlates in the last two decades from a variety of disciplines. Despite a disproportionate focus on behavioral correlates, such as alcohol use, hazing and sexual assault, researchers in the past decade have slowly added psychosocial and educational considerations, building toward a more holistic understanding of outcomes related to involvement.

Book excerpt: Supporting Fraternities and Sororities in the Contemporary Era is inspired by sustained and reoccurring professional conversations and scholarship that have suggested that not just change is necessary, but that there ought to be a fundamental shift towards reconceptualizing the construct of fraternities and sororities. The co-editors curate work from scholars and noteworthy practitioners from across higher education to provide an imperative text that reflects the complexity and expansiveness by addressing diversity, programming, and support approaches. This text commences with the understanding that issues will continuously exist, requiring a greater nuanced depth of appreciation to reduce their negative impact. It also summarizes national organizations from authentic, represented voices. Chapters then focus on solutions to support the fraternity and sorority experience, providing strategies and emerging explanations for the issues described in this text. Supporting Fraternities and Sororities seeks to do exactly as the title implies: to inform all stakeholders so that they can make better decisions about the future of these institutions. Book excerpt: The fraternity and sorority experience has been well-documented in the media, research, and popular culture. Proponents of membership insist upon its positive impact and value, while critics question the continued presence of fraternities and sororities on college campuses. Critical analysis of these organizations is essential to move them forward and ensure their value. There is ample research on membership outcomes such as academic excellence, leadership development, civic engagement, and moral development. However, there is little research about how fraternity and sorority membership influences identity development, specifically gender identity development. The purpose of this case study was to examine the role fraternity and sorority membership plays in shaping the gender identities of members at a Midwestern, public, four-year research institution. The research questions are: a) How does fraternity and sorority membership influence the gender identities of members? b) How do fraternity and sorority members make meaning of their perceptions of and experiences with cultural gender norms? c) How do fraternity and sorority members perform gender? and d) How do fraternities and sororities both reinforce and challenge traditional conceptions of gender? This study was situated in a constructivist research paradigm because the research questions focused on how participants constructed meaning and understood the influence of their fraternity and sorority membership on their gender identity. An embedded single-case study methodology was utilized, using more than one unit of analysis and offering a discussion of themes both within and across cases. The findings of this study support the notion that fraternity and sorority membership has the potential to influence the gender identity development of members. From the data, five major themes emerged to indicate how participants made meaning of their fraternity or sorority membership in relation to their gender identity: a) identity as a fraternity man or sorority woman, b) performance and expression of gender within the community, c) gender performance during member selection processes, d) ways in which traditional conceptions of gender are reinforced, and e) ways in which traditional conceptions of gender are challenged.

Many of these organizations have a residential home either on the campus or off campus for the students known as a fraternity home. One of the values that many fraternities seek to ad-here to is found in the area of leadership (Long, 2012). Leadership has been studied for decades as has the social organizations known as fraternities. The outcomes of both of these areas of studies presented spirited and often complex discussion on how to define a) leadership and b) what is the role of the fraternity on the college campus. This qualitative study of 12 students focused on fraternity members who lived in a residential setting of a fraternity home. The purpose of this study was to understand what factors of the fraternity home experience have on one's leadership identity and to explain how these factors can help guide college professionals in fostering in positive college student development. The researcher used two primary methods of data collection (a) focus groups and (b) in-depth individual semi-structured interviews. A case study research design was utilized to help understand the experiences that take place in the lives of the participants. The analysis of the data in this study helps explain how a college student living in a fraternity home takes on a leadership identity. Furthermore, this study pointed to six themes that emerged to help inform how a residential living setting of a fraternity home shapes the leadership identity of the students. Multiple support systems allow for students to have values tested and reinforced though a fraternity home experience. Diversity of other viewpoints are present in a fraternity and allow for students to see differing perspectives. Older fraternity brothers have a positive influence on younger members in terms of self-confidence, mentoring, and other areas. Positional leadership roles of the fraternity allow students to engage with managing conflict and interacting with adult advisors and mentors. Brotherhood events provide students the opportunity develop relationships and interpersonal skills. Formal chapter meetings allow a venue for students to engage with each other in a manner that produces improved communication skills and critical thinking. Student affairs professionals and leadership educators working with students including but not limited to Greek organizations can take the findings of the study to assist them in their work. A leadership identity is being formed through a fraternity home setting as evidence of this study. Leadership educators can use this study to help their thoughts on how college students, especially fraternity members, view and exercise leadership. This study also presented areas for future research based on the information that was gained from the participants. Colleges continue to need contemporary studies to help them in working enhance the academic and social experience. The information provided in this study can be a catalyst for helping the understanding of leadership and for student development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular culture portrays college Greek organizations as a training ground for malevolent young aristocrats. Films such as Animal House, Revenge of the Nerds, Old School, and Legally Blonde reinforce this stereotype, but they fail to depict the enduring influence of these organizations on their members. Inside Greek U. provides an in-depth investigation of how fraternities and sororities bolster traditional, and potentially damaging, definitions of gender and sexuality. Using evidence gathered in hundreds of focus group sessions and personal interviews, as well as his years of experience as a faculty advisor to Greek organizations, Alan D. DeSantis offers unprecedented access to the world of fraternities and sororities. DeSantis, himself once a member of a fraternity, shows the profoundly limited gender roles available to Greeks: "real men" are taught to be unemotional, sexually promiscuous, and violent; "nice girls," to be nurturing, domestic, and pure. These rigid formulations often lead to destructive attitudes and behaviors, such as eating disorders, date rape, sexual misconduct, and homophobia. Inside Greek U. shows that the Greek experience does not end on graduation day, but that these narrow definitions of gender and sexuality impede students' intellectual and emotional development and limit their range of choices long after graduation. Ten percent of all college students join a Greek organization, and many of the nation's business and political leaders are former members. DeSantis acknowledges that thousands of students join Greek organizations each year in search of meaning, acceptance, friendship, and engagement, and he illuminates the pressures and challenges that contemporary college students face. Inside Greek U. demonstrates how deeply Greek organizations influence their members and suggests how, with reform the worst excesses of the system, fraternities and sororities could serve as a positive influence on individuals and campus life.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify and examine factors that influence the decision of Black males to seek membership in historically White fraternities. This study explored the Black male experience in White fraternities. Black college students' racial identity attitudes were found to contribute to their participation in cultural and non-cultural campus organizations (Cross, 1971, 1978). This study was guided by three theories related to identity development: Cross's Black Identity Development Model (1971, 1978), Chickering's Establishing Identity Vector (1972), and Phinney's Model of Ethnic Identity Development (1990).
