The first section focuses on career theory and research with racial and ethnic minorities. It consists of a review of the relevance and utility of various career theories and models from mainstream vocational psychology to our understanding of the vocational behavior and career development of racial and ethnic minorities -- African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and American Indians. These chapters also summarize other theories from ethnic minority psychology that add to our understanding of minority career development. Finally, they review the existing empirical literature on the career development of these groups and provide a critique of this literature with recommendations for future research. The second section focuses on assessment and intervention with racial and ethnic minorities. The inclusion of the assessment dimension is very important because assessment is such a large and significant component of the career counseling process with these groups. The chapter authors offer guidelines and recommendations for providing career interventions with racial and ethnic minorities. In presenting these guidelines, they also address some of the cultural factors unique to each group that may serve either as facilitators or as inhibitors in the career counseling process. The third section includes commentaries, suggestions, reactions, and syntheses of the previous sections from scholars in the field of vocational psychology. These authors identify and examine the common principles, problems, and themes running across the chapters, and offer suggestions for advancing the field of racial and ethnic minority vocational psychology. This book will become both a valuable source of current information about the vocational psychology of racial and ethnic minorities as well as an inspiration for future research into the career development and vocational behavior of these culturally different individuals.

Book excerpt: The long-standing phenomenon of occupational segregation among Asian Americans in the United States has been well-documented (e.g., Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013). This study will explore the validity of an existing measure on values in the context of work, among a group of Asian American college students. Furthermore, it examines the impact of work values on culturally specific factors (i.e., Asian cultural values, ethnic identity endorsement, racism-related stress) and major-related outcome variables (i.e., major choice, major satisfaction) among Asian American college students. Specifically, it is hypothesized that work values will mediate the relationships between three cultural variables (i.e., adherence to Asian cultural values, ethnic identity endorsement, and racism-related stress) and individual's major-related outcomes (i.e., major choice and major satisfaction). Participants will include 200 Asian-American identified undergraduate college students over the age of 18, surveyed through college courses, social media, and email advertisement. Measures will include the Values Scale (VS; Super & Nevill, 1985); the Asian American Value Scale-Multidimensional (AAVS- M; Kim, Li, & Ng, 2005); the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure - Revised (MEIM-R; Phinney & Ong, 2007); the Asian American Racism-Related Stress Inventory (AARRSI; Liang, Li, & Kim, 2004); and the Academic Major Satisfaction Scale (AMSS; Nauta, 2007). Implications of this study include illuminating the role of cultural context in shaping the function of work value endorsement and major choice patterns of Asian American college students, as well as advancing vocational assessment scholarship by establishing the cultural validity of the existing Values scale in its use with the Asian American college population.

Book excerpt: To varying degrees psychologists have emphasized the influence of interpersonal relationships on the career decision making process, including parental psychological separation and attachment orientation. Models of the career development process, psychological separation and attachment orientation have been criticized as being based on Western, masculine values, which have been applied to women and racial minorities without appropriate consideration of cultural factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate career indecision from a relational and cross-cultural perspective by examining the role of parental psychological separation and attachment orientation in influencing the level of career indecision between White and Asian American undergraduate students. Based on the literature, four hypotheses and two research questions were examined using data completed by 302 White and Asian American undergraduates. Hypothesis one was only partially supported as White Americans demonstrated greater levels of maternal conflictual independence (a dimension of psychological separation) compared to Asia Americans; no cultural differences on ratings of paternal conflictual independence were found. Findings offered no support for hypothesis two predicting cultural and sex differences on rating of attachment anxiety and avoidance. Hypothesis three was partially supported as levels of career indecision within cultural groups were similar for men and women; however, counter to predictions, White Americans and Asian Americans showed similar levels of career decidedness. Partial support was also offered for hypothesis four as low levels of career indecision for White Americans were predicted by high levels of maternal conflictual independence; however, paternal conflictual independence and adult attachment avoidance and anxiety failed to account for significant unique variance. The findings of research question one suggested that for Asian Americans lower levels of career indecision were predicted by high levels of maternal conflictual independence and low levels of attachment anxiety and avoidance. The second research question examining potential cultural and sex differences in the prediction of career indecision indicated no significant differences between and within cultural and sex groups. These findings and their relation to the current literature were discussed, as were the limitations of the study, directions for future research and the implications for the practice of counseling psychology.

The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition, or an overarching theoretical approach, as well as a struggle to connect disparate research.
