Book excerpt: For the past several decades, factors leading to success in postsecondary education have been a target of investigation by psychologists and psychological and educational researchers. Tinto's integration theory (1975, 1987, 1993) is a dominant sociological perspective in studying college student success, especially student persistence. Academic integration and social integration are the two core concepts in his theoretical framework. According to this framework, the better students academically and socially integrate into college systems, the more likely they experience success in college. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of academic integration and social integration on college student success by employing systematic review and meta-analysis techniques. The results indicated that academic integration and social integration have a positive relationship with each other and with college student commitment and success. Compared to academic integration and social integration, commitment has a larger relationship with college student success however. The conceptualization of commitment in the studies is the moderator of effects such that measures of institutional commitment yielded larger effects than did measures of goal commitment. As for the student success behaviors, academic integration and social integration have larger effects on student persistence than student academic performance. In general, Tinto's theory could be applied equally to students in both two year and four year institutions. However, the relationships were stronger in two year than in four year institution, although only statistically significantly so for two of the six tested paths. The patterns of influences were somewhat different between two-year and four-year institutions. The results of this review could help student affairs practitioners to identify which components of Tinto's theory are more important and focus their resources on the target programs. Further, the somewhat different results of two-year and four-year institutions remind student affairs to understand their student populations when they create programs and policies to support student success.

Book excerpt: The persistence of college students, particularly through credential attainment, is of importance to many stakeholders in higher education, including policymakers, taxpayers, parents and students. This dissertation study used longitudinal data nationally representative of higher education institutions and students, the National Center for Education Statistics' (NCES) Beginning Postsecondary Students longitudinal study (BPS:04/09). The purpose of this study is to describe the six-year persistence/attainment of independent students and students beginning in community colleges. Attrition/persistence studies abound; however this dissertation study is unique in its focus on the six-year persistence/attainment (defined as success) of two nontraditional student groups: independent students and community college beginners.^The 17-18 literature-based variables anticipated to influence persistence/attainment were grouped under three umbrellas: background/demographic factors, life circumstance variables, and college enrollment realities. The data were accessed via NCES' online interface, PowerStats, and were analyzed utilizing descriptive and logistic regression analyses to suggest factors related to independent and community college student persistence/attainment in college. Tinto (1975, 1987, 1993) hypothesized the greater the levels of academic and social integration of students into an institution of higher education, the greater the chances of that student being retained in that institution. Many other scholars (Bean & Metnzer, 1985; Braxton, Hirschy & McClendon, 2004; Cabrera, Nora, & Casteñada, 1993; St.^John, Cabrera, Nora, & Asker, 2000) have added to and adapted the concepts and emphases of academic integration and social integration and their relationship with persistence/attainment of nontraditional student groups. Results of this dissertation study suggested modest support for a positive relationship between academic integration and nontraditional student success, and no relationship between social integration of independent students or community college beginners and success. Although attributes of independent status, such as age and single parent status, and beginning in a community college emerged as detrimental to success chances of nontraditional students, results of this study also suggested several positive predictors of success. Receipt of Pell, higher first-year GPA and stopping out were positively related to the success of independent students and community college beginners.^Further refining of theory and research on nontraditional student success, and specifically in the areas of academic integration, community college attendance, financial aid, and attendance patterns is suggested given the findings and implications of this study.

Previous research demonstrates that participation in community service not only assists students in understanding learning outcomes, but also facilitates social and academic integration into the university campus environment. This study illuminates the significant environmental factors of the institution and the various characteristics of students who participated in community service experiences that influenced the students' decision to graduate. The conceptual framework was drawn from Astin's (1983 Input-Environment-Outcome model. The primary data used in this dissertation is from the Multi-Intuitional Study of Leadership at a Doctoral Research institution in the Midwest. The findings provide evidence that students who participated in community service state they intend to graduate from the instiution at slightly higher rates than other students. The main conclusions drawn from this study are participation in community service has positive implications on not only juniors' and seniors' decision to likely graduate, but also first-year students. In addition, community service experiences enhance the faculty and peer interaction, which provides a positive campus environment, a factor also related to a student's intention to graduate. This dissertation recommends that colleges and universities promote the integration of community service experiences into the curriculum to provide a multi-dimensional approach to academic and social integration that encourages the students' likelihood of graduating.

This includes more than 40% of all Bachelor Degree graduates in science and engineering and approximately 50% of all students from traditionally underrepresented minority groups. While it is well known who attends community colleges and who majors in STEM, the role community colleges play in the decisions of underrepresented minorities to pursue Bachelor's degree in STEM fields is not known. The goal of this research was to better understand the role the community college environment plays in URM students' academic and social integration on campus and their college and STEM major persistence intentions. In this study, a STEM identity model was used to make sense of the STEM experiences of eight underrepresented students in community college. The findings of this study include: (1) guidance and support was a significant input to academic and social integration for all participants and influenced identity integration for some participants; (2) altruism emerged as an important part of STEM identity and persistence intentions of participants; (3) inclusion and exclusion were important to STEM identity development and overall identity integration, academic and social integration, and ultimately informed participants' persistence decisions.
