Book excerpt: Past injustice against racial groups rings out throughout history and negatively affects today’s society. Not only do people hold onto negative perceptions, but government processes and laws have remnants of these past ideas that impact people today. To enact change and promote justice, it is essential to recognize the generational trauma experienced by these groups. The Research Anthology on Racial Equity, Identity, and Privilege analyzes the impact that past racial inequality has on society today. This book discusses the barriers that were created throughout history and the ways to overcome them and heal as a community. Covering topics such as critical race theory, transformative change, and intergenerational trauma, this three-volume comprehensive major reference work is a dynamic resource for sociologists, community leaders, government officials, policymakers, education administration, preservice teachers, students and professors of higher education, justice advocates, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: Indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) are a combination of knowledge systems encompassing technology; social, economic, and philosophical learning; or educational, legal, and governance systems. The lack of documentation of these systems presents a problem as the knowledge is fading away over time. In response, it is essential that policies and strategies are undertaken to ensure that these systems are protected and sustained for generations to come. The Handbook of Research on Protecting and Managing Global Indigenous Knowledge Systems is a comprehensive reference source that works to preserve indigenous knowledge systems through research. Focusing on key concepts such as tools of indigenous knowledge management and African indigenous symbols, the book preserves and promotes indigenous knowledge through research and fills the void staff and students within the field of indigenous knowledge systems face with the current lack of research and resources. This book is ideal for university students, lecturers, researchers, academicians, policymakers, historians, sociologists, and anyone interested in the field of indigenous knowledge systems.

Book excerpt: As leaders climb the executive ladder, there are unique differences between age groups. The millennial leader must be groomed for success and faces many obstacles as they progress. As prior generations begin to retire, the next set of leaders must be in the position to sustain the new roles that they are ascending to and have the knowledge and competency to do so. As these leaders quickly move into senior roles, they must be sufficiently prepared. Without this advancement and preparation, there will be no leaders to sustain our organizations and institutions. Considerations and Characteristics of the Millennial Leader in Today’s Global Society explores the routes of millennial leaders for ascension through the educational and corporate ranks, along with the challenges, lessons learned, and qualifications needed to be successful. It provides narratives and insights on the millennial leader, leadership qualities needed of future leaders, and delves into other millennial leaders who have ascended, as well as how managers, supervisors, and senior leaders can help in the changes of the organizational life cycle. Covering topics such as emotionally intelligent leadership, positive social psychology, and leadership development, this premier reference source is an essential resource for business executives and managers, human resource managers, entrepreneurs, government officials, politicians, community leaders, students and educators of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: For many decades, the LGBTQ+ community has been plagued by strife and human rights violations. Members of the LGBTQ+ community were often denied a right to marriage, healthcare, and in some parts of the world, a right to life. While these struggles are steadily improving in recent years, disparities and discrimination still remain from the workplace to the healthcare that this community receives. There is still much that needs to be done globally to achieve inclusivity and equity for the LGBTQ+ community. The Research Anthology on Inclusivity and Equity for the LGBTQ+ Community is a comprehensive compendium that analyzes the struggles and accomplishments of the LGBTQ+ community with a focus on the current climate around the world and the continued impact to these individuals. Multiple settings are discussed within this dynamic anthology such as education, healthcare, online communities, and more. Covering topics such as gender, homophobia, and queer theory, this text is essential for scholars of gender theory, faculty of both K-12 and higher education, professors, pre-service teachers, students, human rights activists, community leaders, policymakers, researchers, and academicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frustrated with the flood of news articles and opinion pieces that were skeptical of minority students' "imagined" campus microaggressions, Micere Keels, a professor of comparative human development, set out to provide a detailed account of how racial-ethnic identity structures Black and Latinx students' college transition experiences. Tracking a cohort of more than five hundred Black and Latinx students since they enrolled at five historically white colleges and universities in the fall of 2013 Campus Counterspaces finds that these students were not asking to be protected from new ideas. Instead, they relished exposure to new ideas, wanted to be intellectually challenged, and wanted to grow. However, Keels argues, they were asking for access to counterspaces—safe spaces that enable radical growth. They wanted counterspaces where they could go beyond basic conversations about whether racism and discrimination still exist. They wanted time in counterspaces with likeminded others where they could simultaneously validate and challenge stereotypical representations of their marginalized identities and develop new counter narratives of those identities. In this critique of how universities have responded to the challenges these students face, Keels offers a way forward that goes beyond making diversity statements to taking diversity actions.

Book excerpt: Which acts by educators are "racist" and which are "antiracist"? How can an educator constructively discuss complex issues of race with students and colleagues? In Everyday Antiracism, leading educators deal with the most challenging questions about race in school, offering invaluable and effective advice. Contributors including Beverly Daniel Tatum, Sonia Nieto, and Pedro Noguera describe concrete ways to analyze classroom interactions that may or may not be "racial," deal with racial inequality and "diversity," and teach to high standards across racial lines. Topics range from using racial incidents as teachable moments and responding to the "n-word" to valuing students' home worlds, dealing daily with achievement gaps, and helping parents fight ethnic and racial misconceptions about their children. Questions following each essay prompt readers to examine and discuss everyday issues of race and opportunity in their own classrooms and schools. For educators and parents determined to move beyond frustrations about race, Everyday Antiracism is an essential tool.
