Excerpt: ...time receives, through Jesus Christ, in Whom he is ingrafted, faith, hope and love."" They received, therefore, the forgiveness of their sins, sanctifying grace and the whole train of attendant virtues and supernatural Gifts of the Holy Ghost. However, according to learned doctors, in the older dispensation, the invisible mission of the Holy Ghost was not yet to be accompanied by a visible mission through the Incarnation because the latter would then have come out of due time, it being necessary that the visible mission of the Divine Son precede that of the Holy Ghost. It was quite fitting, that before the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity revealed His presence outwardly (thus giving to men a clearer knowledge of His Person), the plenitude of time resolved upon by the Wisdom of God for the Incarnation of the Word and His appearance amongst us, should have arrived. 1 James ii. 23. Triduum. sess. VI., c. vii. Moreover, before revealing the dogma of the Trinity to a people so prone to idolatry as the Jews, it was necessary first to impress deeply upon their minds the fundamental truth of the unity of God. This truth, the direct antithesis of polytheism, is constantly recalled in the books of the Old Testament: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, is one." 12 On the other hand, we meet with only a few obscure allusions to the Trinity of Persons. Sometimes it is question indeed of the Word of God and His spirit, but they are spoken of in such vague terms, that it is very problematical whether the Jewish teachers had a notion that they were Three distinct Persons. Under the New Law, on the contrary, after the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, the mystery of the Blessed Trinity was fully revealed and preached to...

Book excerpt: The Sovereign Pontiff, Leo XIII., in his admirable Encyclical, Divinum illud munus, addressed to the entire Catholic world under date of May 9, 1897, expresses his ardent desire to see faith in the august ministry of the Trinity revived in men's souls, and piety towards the Holy Ghost increased in their hearts. To this end he drew the attention of the Faithful to the presence of the Holy Spirit, His wonderful power, as well as His activity, throughout the Church; and also in the soul of each of the Faithful, imparting the abundance of His celestial Gifts. Furthermore, the Vicar of Jesus Christ reminded Catholic preachers and others who have charge of souls, of the duty incumbent on them to explain carefully, and with clearness and completeness, all that relates to the Holy Spirit, avoiding difficult and subtle controversies, and taking special pains to treat of the innumerable benefits we have received from Him and do constantly receive; so that, as the Holy Father added, ignorance and error about these sublime things may be expelled from the minds of the faithful, who are so rightly called. "the children of light" (Ephesians v. 8). Words as wise as they are opportune. As a matter of fact, how many Christians of our day have any notion, however vague and imperfect, about the Holy Spirit, His Gifts, His wondrous works in the souls of men, the spiritual riches and joys which He lavishes upon whomsoever shows himself docile to His inspirations? "Perhaps," insists Leo XIII., "it would not be impossible even in this our era, to come across Catholic Christians, who, if questioned, as were the proselytes of old by the Apostle, whether or not they had received the Holy Ghost, would answer in the same words: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Ghost'" (Acts xix. 2). At any rate, there are many who are either entirely ignorant or have but a very superficial knowledge about Him, and thereby, to a certain extent, fall short of the fruits of their religion, lacking the knowledge of that truth so beautiful and so consoling-His invisible sending and His indwelling in souls in the state of grace. And yet what can be more worthy of their deepest attention? Is not this God's supreme Gift, the chief Girt and the crowning Gift of all-God Himself coming within us, giving Him· self to us, making Himself our Guest infinitely sweet, our Friend, our Consoler, the active principle of our sanctification, and the pledge of our eternal happiness, nay, its very origin. Is this not the supremely important subject of a reasonable being's thought, the object of his most passionate devotion?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the Souls of the Just According to the Teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas We, the undersigned, have examined, by appointment of the Very Reverend Father Provincial, the book, already published under the title: The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the Souls of the Just, by the Very Rev. Father Master, Brother Barthelemy Froget, of the Order of the Preaching Brothers. This work being very praiseworthy on account of the solidity of its doctrine and by its conformity with the teachings of St. Thomas, has won the attention of theologians. Having thus advanced the progress of sacred science, it may furthermore contribute to the increase of piety in men's souls. It has seemed to us worthy to be republished, and we affirm our approval of the new impression, with the additions and changes which the author has judged proper to introduce. Book excerpt: Bound for Beatitude is about St. Thomas Aquinas’s theology of beatitude and the journey thereto. Consequently, the work’s topic is the meaning and purpose of human life embedded in that of the whole cosmos. This study is not an antiquarian exercise in the thought of some sundry medieval thinker, but an exercise of ressourcement in the philosophical and theological wisdom of one of the most profound theologians of the Catholic Church, one whom the Church has canonized, granted the title “Doctor of the Church,” and for a long time regarded as the common doctor. This exercise of ressourcement takes its methodological cues from the common doctor; hence, it is an integrated exercise of philosophical, dogmatic, and moral theology. Its specific theological topic, the ultimate human end, perfect happiness, beatitude, and the journey thereto—stands at the very heart of St. Thomas’s theology. Far from being passé, his theology of beatitude is of urgent pertinence as the crisis of humanity and of creation and the exile of God seems to approach its apogee. By way of a presentation, interpretation, and defense of Thomas Aquinas’s doctrine of beatitude and the journey thereto, Bound for Beatitude advances an argument based on four theses: (1) The loss of a theology of beatitude has greatly impoverished contemporary theology. In order to succeed and flourish, theology must recover a sound teleological orientation. (2) In order to recover a sound teleological orientation, theology must recover metaphysics as its privileged instrument. (3) Thomas Aquinas provides a still pertinent model for how theology might achieve these goals in a metaphysically profound theology of beatitude and the beatific vision. Finally, (4) Aquinas’s rich and sophisticated account of the virtues charts the journey to beatitude in a way that still has analytic force and striking relevance in the early twenty-first century.

John Meinert’s The Love of God Poured Out enters into the major positions and debates within Thomism to forge a new synthesis on this topic within the greater body of scholarship existing today. Meinert reads Aquinas’s thought on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and grace in an integral and analogous way. Not only does The Love of God Poured Out aid scholars in understanding Aquinas’s thought on these two issues, it also once more clarifies the truth that the Holy Spirit and his gifts are neither a devout appendix to moral theology nor a pious nod to tradition. They are the heart and height of the moral life, a life lived subditus Deo.

It names fallacies that have in the past skewed theological understanding of that relationship. It argues that the philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce avoided those same fallacies and provides a novel frame of reference for rethinking the theology of grace. The author shows how the insights of other American philosophers flesh out undeveloped aspects of Peirce's thought. He formulates a metaphysics of experience derived from his philosophical analysis. Finally, he develops an understanding of supernatural grace as the transmutation and transvaluation of human experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some think that liturgy is formal, public, and for ordinary people, while mysticism is uncontrollable, private, and for extraordinary saints. Is there a connection between the two? In this volume, David Fagerberg proposes that mysticism is the normal crowning of the Christian life, and the Christian life is liturgical. We intuitively sense that liturgy and theology and mysticism have an affinity. Liturgical theology should reveal liturgy’s mystical heart. Liturgical theology asks “What happens in liturgy?” and liturgical mysticism asks “What happens to us in liturgy?”, and perfects our interior liturgy. In Liturgical Mysticism, Fagerberg directs the reader to look fixedly at Christ, who is the Mystery present in liturgy, and who bestows his resurrection power upon his adopted children. “In a time where both too wild and too mild spiritualities abound, it is audacious to put forward a book on liturgical mysticism. [This book] continues to enrich liturgical theology by amplifying its horizon and solidifying the foundation on which it rests.” Joris Geldhof Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

Book excerpt: The Carmelite nuns at Pontoise invited Père Jacques to give conferences and to preach as retreat master. They received from him a seven-day retreat in the late summer of 1943. This book contains the talks he gave to the nuns: they are inspiring, but also warm-hearted reflections, on questions of key interest to his audience. Among the topics were love for Christ, for His Blessed Mother, the nuns’ Carmelite contemplative prayer life, and their religious observance, but all received deft treatment from this confrere who eventually became famous for his compassionate assistance to the persecuted in World War II. More Information As a diocesan priest Père Jacques Bunel was frequently in demand as a preacher in his home diocese of Rouen (Normandy). Along with his duties as educator in a prep school in Le Havre he spoke at important public occasions. He was chosen to give the sermon that marked the five hundredth anniversary of the death of St. Joan of Arc in the Cathedral of Rouen, the city where she was burned at the stake. Afterwards, when he became a Discalced Carmelite friar (the cover photo shows him on the day he professed his vows), he continued to exercise a preaching ministry. We owe the full texts of those talks (to the Carmelite Nuns of Pontoise), as well as helpful notes and an introduction, to Rev. Dr. Francis J. Murphy. Father Murphy, a diocesan priest who has become a good friend of the Carmelites through his interest in Père Jacques, collaborating with them as he collaborates with his historian colleagues, teaches at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. This collection of talks extends the knowledge Father Murphy has provided to the public in the biography volume he named and published at ICS Publications with the title: Père Jacques, Resplendent in Victory. Book includes 8 photos.
