Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Corps in France I AM not at all clear why an Introduction should be needed to this important and thrilling narrative of the deeds of the Indian Corps in France in the early days of the Great War, in addition to the excellent Preface which has already been contributed by the Authors. Still less is it clear Why a remote spectator should have been urged to undertake the task. It can only be because a former Viceroy must have enjoyed many opportunities during his term of. Office in India of making the acquaintance and realizing the superb qualities of the Indian Army, that he should be invited, Or would consent - as I have willingly done - to join in this tribute to their latest achievement. Book excerpt: The Indian Corps, consisting of two infantry divisions (Meerut and Lahore), arrived in France in September/October 1914. It was commanded by Lieutenant-General Sir James Willcocks who was the most senior officer n the BEF after Field Marshal Sir John French and General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien. The corps remained on the Western Front till the end of 1915, when it was transferred to the Middle East, a more suitable theatre of war for Indian Army troops. This history was published at the request and under the authority of the India Office, and apart from General Willcocks' own memoirs, With The Indians in France, it is the only record of the corps. It is not altogether a happy tale, as the book makes clear. While there was no questioning the bravery of the troops (five Indian/Gurkha VCs) there were problems of climate, reinforcements, officer casualties (the Indian battalion had only 13 British officers, who were first priority targets for the Germans), not to mention mishandling and lack of understanding on the part of the High Command. Total casualties among Indian Army units amounted to 21,413 (each division had, initially, three British battalions and divisional artillery was British). An unusual and fascinating story and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Indians in France I have not attempted to write a Military History of the Indian Army Corps in France. I lay no claim to describing the course of events on the British Front, as a Whole, during 1914 - 15, except in as far as they concern the Corps. The excellent account written by lieut.-colonel Merewether, Indian Army, and Sir Frederick Smith, Bart. (the Indian Corps in France, published by John Murray), both of Whom served on my Staff as Recording Officers on behalf of the India and War Offices, and who have had at their disposal all the official records, furnishes ample details of the movements and the doings of the Corps as forming an integral part of the British Army in Flanders. I have not had the advantages of papers of reference, nor have I seen all the diaries of the various Commanders and others, and have had the handicap of writing most of my story far removed from England; but it must be borne in mind that a great part of their information was naturally derived from my own reports and correspondence, and of nearly all such I kept copies, and have used them. If, therefore, in some cases our descriptions of military events appear somewhat similar the reason will be readily understood. Also I kept a very careful Diary from day to day which has enabled me to write with certainty of the events recorded. Book excerpt: The memoirs of Sir James Willcocks stand apart from other diaries and recountings of senior British Officers on the Western Front during the First World War; although a British Gentleman, his heart had long been taken by charms of India. Willcocks was a long serving officer in the Indian Army and led his men all the way from Nepal, Scinde, the Punjab and Bengal to the mud and blood of the trenches in Northern France and Belgium. The fighting prowess and sacrifice of these brave Indian soldiers has often been forgotten tale, but their commanding General tells of their efforts and victories with justified pride throughout his work which covers the early months of the war until his resignation in late 1915. The Indian Corps was heavily engaged throughout at la Bassée, Messines, Armentières, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge and Festubert and finally at the brutal blood-letting during the battle of Loos.

This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men from all around the far reaches of the British Empire flooded into the ranks of the British army for the titanic struggle against Germany and her allies during the First World War. Ghurkhas from Nepal, Men of the Punjab, Rajputs, Dogras and Pathans volunteered to fight in the Indian regiments destined for service across the wide oceans in Europe. The men found warm comradeship with the Tommies who fought beside them, cold climates in Flanders and Belgium, and hellishly hot fighting against the enemy. Major Maitland was an officer in the Indian Army attached to the supply corps bringing vital arms, ammunition and food to the front-line. The job was certainly not a sinecure as the supply depots were often not out of range of the enemy’s guns, particularly at Gallipoli. He tells his story with great detail, probably based on a diary or notes that he took at the time. His book is particularly interesting regarding the hellish conditions at Gallipoli - in fact, so interesting that the official Australian Government Anzac site quotes from his book. Essential reading.
