Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Improvement Era, Vol. 26 Probably the most interesting and instructive subject for religious investigation is the fulfilment of prophecy either ancient or modern. "He that prophesieth, speaketh unto men for edification and exhortation and comfort." This holds true in our day as well as in the days of the Apostle Paul. The prophecy on war given through Joseph Smith, contained in the 87th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants, is of especial interest at this time, since with the close of the late World War we have closed another important chapter in the fulfilment of this prophecy. If the reader is not familiar with or wishes to refresh his mind on this prophecy he can find it as stated above. Space will allow only a resume of the important or outstanding points contained in it. These after giving date are: 1. The prophecy is given in the name of the Lord, "Verily thus saith the Lord." 2. It predicts a series of wars: 3. The first, or the Civil War: (a) The first war as well as the series of wars should begin with the rebellion of South Carolina. (b) Tho Southern States should be divided against the Northern Slates. (c) The Southern States should call on other nations, including Great Britain. 4. The second war or the World's War. (a) The nations called upon by the Southern Stales would either individually or collectively call upon other nations. (b) This call would be for defense against other nations (nations other than those called upon by the South). (c) At this time war should be poured out upon all nations. 5. The Third War or the Race War. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Improvement Era, Vol. 29: April, 1926 The slogan of the Mutual Improvement Association during the current season is We stand for 'an individual testimony of the divinity of Jesus Christ. Many non-believers, generally, 'might question the practicability of this slogan. Some of them would at once say that it is impossible to get such a testimony, a sufficiently good reason being, they would assert, that Jesus was only a man, no more divine than any other man; but even if he is divine, there is no way for common mortal men individually to know this. The latter View is taken, I believe, by most Christians. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 26: September, 1923 In celebrating as we are the one-hundredth anniversary of the marvelous first visit of the Angel Moroni to the Prophet Joseph Smith this month of September 1823, we invite your attention to one of the great items which he revealed: ' The whereabouts of the gold plates from which the Book of Mor mon was later translated by the power of God. They were delivered to J os eph in 1827, the translation completed, and the book printed just before the organization of the Church, on the 6th day of April, 1830. We invite you to become one of its' readers. The Book of Mormon is a record of the people of Nephi who, some 600 years before Christ, peopled the American continent; and of their descendants, the Indians, or Lamanites; also a record of the peo ple of Jared who came to this land when the Lord confounded the languages, at the building of the tower of Babel. It testifies to the Jews and the Gentiles that Jesus is the Christ, the eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations. It is a new witness for God and the divine mission of his Son Jesus Christ. It contains the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the natives of this conti nent and explains in simple words the message of salvation to all who affecting their lives for good. It is of practical value to the people of this day, and, besides, contains many meritorious literary excellencies. Few books survive, with increasing circulation the close of a hundred years. We doubt Whether there is a single book, and especially a religious work, published in the United States between 1827 and 1830, that has as large a present circulation as the Book of Mormon, after its nearly one hundred years in print. Three books are named as being circulated and read today that were first written and published between 1823 and 1830, they are: Tales of a Traveler, 1824, by Washington Irving; and J. Fenimore Cooper's, The Last of the M ochicans, 1826, and The Prairie, 1827. The Book of Mormon has had a constant increase of readers, and during the past few years its circula. Tion has exceeded all expectations. Hundreds of thousands eagerly read it and become interested in its marvelous message. We call your attention to the conditions on which one may receive an individual testimony of the truth of the Book of Mormon. In his farewell to the Lamanites, Moroni gives the key: Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, and when ye shall receive these things that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it to you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 15: August, 1912 We thank thee, O God, for a Prophet to guide us in these latter-days. I will st0p just long enough to have these lovely children (ensign Primary) sing the hymn for our benefit. (the children sang.) They have only given us the first verse, but you all know the rest, and I will not take time to read it. We thank thee, O God, for a Prophet. When any bishop sings that song, or announces it in his ward, I want him to remember that the Prophet of God, Brigham Young, under the inspiration of God, organized the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Associations. His successor, John Taylor, appointed the superintendency with the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles at its head. The successor to John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, when we sug gested that he was nearly ninety years of age, and that we did not care to burden him with the labors of the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Associations, replied, I would like to be the superintendent as long as I live. I want to be one with the boys, and partake of the spirit of the young men. It is that disposition, a willingness to mingle with the youth, and to take part in their activities which helped to keep men like Wilford Woodruff and John R. Winder active in body and in spirit. We partake to a certain extent of the spirits of those with whom we 111ingle. When I was in Liverpool, too tired to go to the theater, Brother Penrose would say, Come on, Sister Grant, we will go and let the old man rest. I lean back - to dream. I see eyes I liked to meet in those happy days, and I hear a voice that would then go to my heart - Doe, old chap, there will come a time when you need a friend and help - then take this book. The measles don't hurt much if you will take a little saffron tea or something else to keep them on the surface, but if they once set in on you, they turn your hide yellow and sometimes make you cross-eyed. So do not let politics set in on you. I believe absolutely in the best men for office.
