Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Gazetteer of India, Vol. 1 The first edition of The Imperial Gazetteer of India was published in nine volumes in 1881. A second edition, augmented to fourteen volumes, was issued in the years 1885-7. A revised form of the article on India, greatly enlarged and with statistics brought up to date, appeared as an independent volume in 1893, under the title of The Indian Empire: Its Peoples, History, and Products. All of these were edited by the late Sir William Wilson Hunter, K. C. S. I., who formed the original plan of the work as far back as 1869, when he was first entrusted with the duty of organizing a statistical survey of the country, and who wrote most of The Indian Empire in its final form with his own hand. His untimely death in 1900 has deprived the present edition of the advantages of his ripe experience and literary skill. The second edition having for some time passed out of print, it was resolved by the Government of India that a new edition should be prepared in connexion with the Census of 1901. The changes, however, that have been introduced, both in the general scheme and in the methods of compilation, may justify its being considered as a new work rather than a new edition. The bulk will be raised from fourteen to twenty-six volumes, including a companion Atlas; and the single volume of 'The Indian Empire' has been expanded into four volumes, entitled respectively 'Descriptive, ' 'Historical, ' 'Economic, ' and 'Administrative.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Gazetteer of India, Vol. 25 This Index to the twenty-four volumes of the Gazetteer has been compiled, under the supervision of the English editor, by Miss Petherbridge and her staff of assistants, among whom special mention may be made of the services of Miss D. K. Bloxam. In the main, the plan adopted in the last edition has been followed; but, while local references to headings of almost universal occurrence - such as Christians, Districts, History, &c. - are now omitted, space has been found for the insertion of many more personal names and words of only occasional mention. Thus, though the body of the work is increased from thirteen to twenty-four volumes, the number of pages of the Index has only risen proportionately from 350 to 631. The general rule has been to place first under each heading any references in the four volumes of 'The Indian Empire, ' and then to follow with the references in the other volumes in alphabetical sequence, thus occasionally producing chronological disorder. In the arrangement of names common to more than one person, chronology has been the chief consideration, though rulers of the same dynasty have been kept together, and Englishmen come in the order of their Christian names. Some inconsistency may be detected in the order of composite words, as to which there seems to be no absolute agreement among index-makers, especially when dealing with Oriental compounds. So far as possible, the principle adopted has been, not to follow all the letters alphabetically through such a word, but to place first any word appended but not joined to the leading word, and then the compounds: e.g. Muhammad, Muhammad Shah, Muhammadabad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Gazetteer of India, Vol. 9: Bomjur to Central India It should be stated that no attempt has been made lo distinguish between the long and short sounds of e and 0 in the Dravidian languages, which possess the vowel-sounds in 'bet' and 'hot' in addition to those given above. Nor has it been thought necessary to mark vowels as long in cases where mistakes in pronunciation were not likely to be made. Consonants Most Indian languages have different forms for a number of consonants, such as d, t, r, &c., marked in scientific works by the use of dots or italics. As the European ear distinguishes these with difficulty in ordinary pronunciation, it has been considered undesirable to embarrass the reader with them: and only two notes are required. In the fast place, the Arabic c, a strong guttural, has been represented by instead of, which is often used. Secondly, it should be remarked that aspirated consonants are common: and, in particular, dh and th (except in burma) never have the sound of th in 'this' or 'thin, ' but should be pronounced as in 'woodhouse' and 'boathook.' In shape it resembles an hour glass, contracted in the centre, where the Eastern Ghats nearly meet the sea, and widening out in the north and south into undulating plains. Pleasant groves of trees give to the scenery a greener appearance than is usually met with in the plains farther to the south; whilst rugged moun tains, frequently covered with dense jungle, relieve the eye. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Gazetteer of India, Vol. 8: Karens to Madnagarh The villages of those who live among the hills are generally built in the middle of the jungle, and remote from any frequented track. The houses are of the poorest description; all the inhabitants in a village form really one large family, being all connected by blood or marriage no stranger can settle among them. Many large villages have never seen a European face. Some few even manage to keep the Burmese tax-gatherer outside by sending their revenue to him. This life of freedom and independence is dearer to them than all the luxuries of the plains. The only domestic animals they have are fowls, dogs, and pigs dogs are eaten by the tai only.
