Book excerpt: Firms in the North American automotive industry that fail to earn access to supplier resources more effectively than their rivals are at a significant competitive disadvantage. The purpose of this study was to determine if customer coercive and non-coercive power impact preferential access to supplier resources (herein, preferred customer status), and if supplier trust of the customer moderates the relationship between these variables. Quantitative survey data from 228 tier-two suppliers in the North American automotive industry who were most knowledgeable about the exchange relationship with their customers (i.e., tier-one firms) found that: H1) coercive power from the customer in the form of threats and punishment has a negative impact on preferential access to the supplier’s most qualified employees; H2) non-coercive power from the customer has a positive impact on preferred customer status; H3) trust does not moderate the impact of coercive power on preferred customer status; and H4) trust does moderate the impact of non-coercive power on preferred customer status. Thematic analysis of one open-ended question suggests suppliers consider both the strategic nature of the customer-supplier relationship and the anticipation of profitable revenue growth when awarding customers preferred status. Analysis of the effects of supplier type found early supplier involvement in customer new product development may foster strategic supplier-customer relationships and activate supplier reciprocal investment of resources in the relationship. Three practical recommendations are derived from this study: 1) preferred customer status can be earned through non-coercive power (e.g., incentives and respect); 2) customer strategies to become a preferred customer should include initiatives to increase supplier perception of the customer’s business skills and promotion of the customer’s success in the market; and 3) customers who seek preferential access to supplier resources should have active strategies for trust-building.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Customer Relationship Management, CRM, grade: B-, University of Leicester (Management Center), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the importance of CRM in a specific industry for a specific company. More precisely, this work will explore the automotive supplier industry; and within that industry, the company Y will be analysed, discussed and explored. Y is a supplier of aluminium tubes and aluminium profiles to the global automotive industry. The research will encompass several key areas in an effort to present a multi-perspective work, including best practices, an overview of CRM, and key factors of success as well as an automotive industry survey that the author administered, documented and integrated into this dissertation to add an element from the real business world to the research. First, a broad overview of relevant CRM theories and their meaning will be presented in order to set the stage for a discussion of Y as a specific competitor in the automotive supplier industry and to facilitate realistic and effective comparison and contrast between industry trends and the chosen company in particular. Following the CRM theory overview, differences between business-to-business and business-to-consumer markets will be differentiated for a complete understanding of these two distinct segments of the industry. Success factors within CRM will be presented, together with the limitations and problems associated with the application of CRM. After that supplementing theories beyond CRM will be identified and discussed. A literature review will be included to add substance and relevance to the research. In the second part of this dissertation, a survey will be presented that the author composed and administered towards Y’s business-to-business automotive customers. After the survey and methodology is discussed, an analysis of the results of the survey will be discussed and graphically represented, bringing the paper full circle and representing real-world, current and relevant experiences, attitudes and comments. Based upon the results, interpretation will evolve into fact-based conclusions, and recommendations, all within the scope of the limitations that the author also will identify and reveal in order to give the readers of the research an accurate representation of possible limits in the research. In brief, the author aims to blend relevant literature, real-life industry experiences and a survey of current industry attitudes and opinions to provide a full-bodied, comprehensive work of effective research.

Book excerpt: Due to an increased competitive condition in high-skilled supply markets, buying firms increasingly find themselves competing with their rivals for the best suppliers available in a certain field. Due to the scarcity of such suppliers, the latter may not dedicate their resources equally to all customers and become highly selective. As a consequence, buying firms start to recognize that it is essential for future success to secure their key suppliers' benevolence, as suppliers tend to grant their favourite customers a more preferential treatment than they concede to other customers. The research in this thesis is aimed at contributing to and expanding the academic knowledge on preferential customer treatment by suppliers. More specifically, it explores the benefits of preferential customer treatment by suppliers. Motivated by its relevance in practice, special emphasis is put on investigating the antecedents of preferential customer treatment and how suppliers' behaviour can be influenced by buying firms in a beneficial way. On a theoretical level, we deduce customer attractiveness, supplier satisfaction and preferred customer status as determinants of a suppliers' decision-making behaviour regarding the reward of preferential treatment to selected customers. On a more operational level, we identify the drivers of these determinants and show how customer attractiveness, supplier satisfaction and preferred customer status can be fostered by buyers. Through the quantitative and qualitative research performed throughout this dissertation, we researched deeper into the factors influencing supplier behaviour, and were able to unveil valuable results both for practice as well as for theory. This thesis provides a fruitful ground for further research and offers guidelines for buying firms on how to secure preferential treatment by suppliers and to create supply side-induced competitive advantages.
