This study inquires whether oral retellings are an effective strategy for improving the reading comprehension of second language learners. Participants were coached and guided through the oral retelling process for a time period of four weeks. All students were at the intermediate or early advanced stage of English language acquisition. The results of the study show that participants in the oral retelling group significantly improved their reading comprehension. Students participating in oral retellings also benefited by gaining confidence while speaking in public, increasing their English vocabulary, and becoming personally involved in literature. This study investigates the effectiveness of retelling as a reading strategy for elementary school students of English as a Second Language (ESL). Two first graders, three second graders, and three fifth graders participated in the study. They were divided into two groups (Group A and B) considering their English competence and other factors. Their retelling outcomes including oral, written and drawings during 2 months period were collected and analyzed. During the study, students were being read stories and asked to retell the stories orally and/ or in written and/ or in drawings. The results show a noticeable improvement in their story structure, length of the retelling, reading comprehension, and confidence. No major improvement in vocabulary growth was found, in spite of individual difference. Self-evaluations and observation results indicate that the participants enjoyed story readings, their attitude toward reading became more positive and they gained self-confidence. The results suggest that retelling could be a useful reading strategy for ESL learners with its potential.

The expository text used in this study was entitled Friendship, a suggested reading for intermediate students. The text was 490 words long, with average sentence length of 12,8, had a Flesch Reading Ease value of 77.5, and a computed Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level of 6.1. Most of the pupils attained a rating of developing for the content (40.57%), structure (61.71%), and vocabulary (46.86%) of their retelling. A small percentage of the respondents attained an exceptional rating on content (13.14%), structure (4.57%), and vocabulary (0.57%). Majority of the pupils (47.43%) were classified as approaching proficiency (80-84) in terms of their Grade 6 English subject grade. Only 1.71% of the pupils belonged to the advanced category. The reading comprehension of the pupils in expository texts has a significant relationship with their grades in their English subject. This means that their reading comprehension in expository text influences their performance in their English subject class. Results revealed that pupils had difficulty in comprehending expository texts as revealed by their low rating in the content, structure and vocabulary of their retelling. Further, the academic performance of the pupils in their English subject is affected by their reading comprehension.

Book excerpt: In this intervention study, I engaged principles of culturally responsive research to examine the effectiveness of explicit reading comprehension strategy instruction for English Learners (ELs) with specific learning disabilities (SLD). This study replicated and extended previous research (Jitendra, Hoppes, & Xin, 2000) by modifying instruction found to be effective for native English speakers (i.e., explicit reading comprehension strategy instruction with a self-monitoring procedure). Modifications included: (a) integrating culturally relevant text, (b) providing native language support, and (c) melding strategies from the fields of teaching English as a second language and special education. Through a co-teaching model, I provided instruction to four participants during a 135-min literacy block in a fifth-grade general education classroom for 13 weeks. A multiple probe across participants design (Gast & Ledford, 2010) evaluated effects of instruction on two dependent variables: (a) participants' sophistication with applying comprehension thinking strategies while reading, as measured by comprehension thinking strategy rubrics (Keene, 2006) and (b) participants' comprehension, as measured through percentage accuracy with responding to verbally-posed, researcher-developed literal and inferential comprehension questions. I assessed maintenance of effects for up to 8 weeks after participants exited the intervention. I assessed generalization to on-grade-level text and to a standardized achievement test (Woodcock Johnson Tests of Academic Achievement III-R; Woodcock, McGrew, & Mather, 2001). Additionally, I examined participants' self-efficacy as readers at pre- and postintervention by collecting information from the Motivation to Read Profile survey and interview (Gambrell, Palmer, Coddling, & Mazzoni, 1996). Finally, I measured participants' perceptions of the social acceptability of intervention procedures and outcomes through a researcher-developed, 9-item, Likert-scale survey. Results of this study show a functional relation for accuracy with answering literal and inferential comprehension questions and for sophistication with applying comprehension thinking strategies to read instructional-level text. All four participants performed within a similar range on on-grade-level probes as compared to instructional-level probes before and after the intervention. Participants improved or maintained scores on a standardized achievement test. Intervention effects maintained at the end of a 2- to 8-week period at a level above respective baseline performance. Moreover, participants' attitudes toward reading and their motivation toward reading increased or maintained at high levels. Results from social validation questionnaires showed favorable impressions of the intervention's procedures and outcomes. Findings are discussed with regard to the need for future research and the implications for practice.

The participants of this study used Ebe's Cultural Relevance Rubric to rate the cultural relevance of two texts, a more culturally relevant one, and a less culturally relevant one. After having read each story, the students provided a written retelling. Their scores on the written retellings allowed the author to measure their levels of reading comprehension. The resulting data suggested that the students exhibited higher levels of reading comprehension on the retellings of the story they had rated as more culturally relevant.

Book excerpt: Comprehension is an essential component of reading proficiency that produces long-term gains for learners. However, many upper elementary school-age children struggle with reading comprehension. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of a self-monitoring intervention on reading comprehension for three elementary school-age children with reading delays. Two studies were conducted. In Study 1, behavioral skills training was used to teach participants the elements of a story retell and how-to self-monitor their own story retells. In Study 2, a multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the effects of self-monitoring on four dependent variables: a) oral retell accuracy, b) oral retell fluency, c) oral reading fluency, and d) responses to comprehension questions. Results of Study 1 suggest that behavioral skills training was used to effectively teach the elements of a story retell and self-monitoring to all three participants. Results of Study 2 suggest that self-monitoring increased oral retelling fluency, oral retelling accuracy, and reading comprehension. Few differences were observed for oral reading fluency. Results, limitations, and implications for reading instruction are discussed.

Students improved his/her retelling percentage and number of correct explicit reading comprehension questions from the beginning of the intervention to the end of the intervention, according to pre-assessment tests and post-assessment tests. Implicit reading comprehension scores for each student remained the same throughout the study.
