Book excerpt: The ability to read is an essential component of the educational process and is strongly correlated with academic success. The literature reveals that, in general, Hispanic elementary school students in third through fifth grade consistently perform below their school-age peers in the academic arena, and that once below, remain below throughout their schooling. The purpose of the present study was to more clearly identify the ecological factors that are closely associated with the academic success of Hispanic third through fifth grade elementary school students who are identified as English Language Learners (ELL). Two research questions guided this study: 1.) Are there differences between third to fifth grade Hispanic boys and girls who are identified as ELL on reading and math achievement as measured by the Smarter Balanced Assessments, and 2.) Are there differences in achievement as measured by the Smarter Balanced reading and math assessment among ecological variables (Neighborhood, School, Friends, Family, Parent Education Involvement, Health and Well-Being, Social Behavior at Home and School, and School Performance) for third to fifth grade boys and girls identified as ELL? The sample consisted of 65 Hispanic third through fifth grade students who were identified as English Language Learners. They were assessed using the Elementary Student Success Profile (ESSP); this tool resulted in triangulated data from three different surveys (from parents, the children, and their teachers). The ESSP was then used to identify the factors associated with academic achievement in reading and math, as measured by the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Statistical analysis yielded non-significant findings for both questions. However, when additional analysis was completed, significant associations were found between school environment and reading scores, friends and math scores, and health and well-being with both reading and math scores. There was no difference by gender.

Book excerpt: Home computer ownership and Internet access have become essential to education, job security and economic opportunity. The digital divide, the gap between those who can afford and can use computer technolgies remains greatest for ethnic/racial groups placing them at a disadvantage for economic and eductional opportunties. The purpose of the study was to gain understanding and insight into the sociocultural factors influencing the digital divide as related to Latinos as a group, specifically a group of non-traditional Latina pre-service teachers from Southwestern Kansas in a required online instructional media and technology course. The folowing sociocultural factors 1) generational status, 2) English language ability, 3) educational attainment, 4) socioeconomic status and 5) gender identity are defined and identified in relationship to the success of eight Latina non-traditional, pre-service teachers in a required online instructional media and technology course as a requirement in their pursuit of a degree in elementary education. Four of the five sociocultural factors explored in this study; generational status, educational attainment, socioeconomic status, and gender roles appeared to influence the success of Hispanic, non-traditional pre-service teachers enrolled in the required online instructional media and technology course. Only one of the factors, English language ability, did not appear to have any direct influence on the success of these particular students. Although many of the students struggled with conventional use of English and this undoubtedly influenced their success in other courses, it did not inhibit their success in the on-line media and technology course. Participants were most expressive in their personal interviews about the influence of gender roles, both as a motivator and an inhibitor of success. These sociocultural factors also influence one another, particularly as generational status influences, English language ability, educational attainment, gender roles, and ultimately socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status, in turn, highly influences computer ownership and Internet access which leads to reduced familiarity with computer and technology terminology, prior experience with computers, and the participant's perceived self-efficacy in using computer technology for teaching. These factors all then influence the digital divide and the gaps that exist between Hispanics and other racial / ethnic groups.

Book excerpt: Executive control represents a collection of high-order cognitive processes that are associated with important child outcomes, including academic achievement and social competencies. Despite the burgeoning interest in examining the development of executive control, less is known about the development of these skills among ethnic minority children. Hispanic children are currently the largest ethnic minority group in the United States and their diverse sociocultural and linguistic backgrounds provide an excellent context to study the influence of linguistic and sociocultural factors on the development of child executive control. The purpose of the three complementary studies reported in this dissertation is to contribute to current literature on executive control by examining the effects of linguistic (i.e., Spanish-English bilingualism) and sociocultural (i.e., family socioeconomic status, parenting, and ethnic cultural values) factors on executive control among Hispanic preschoolers. Study 1 examines the validity of five neurocognitive tasks as assessments of executive control among bilingual Hispanic children. Study 2 considers the impact of Spanish-English bilingualism, as assessed by maternal reports of child language use and child vocabulary scores, on child executive control. Finally, Study 3 focuses on the effects of family socioeconomic status, parenting, cultural values and acculturative stress on child executive control. Study participants included 128 typically developing Hispanic preschoolers (i.e., three- to five-year-olds) and their mothers. The following results are notable. In Study 1, the five neurocognitive tasks were found to be valid indicators of executive control, and four of the five tasks held equivalent measurement properties for the English and Spanish versions of the tasks. In Study 2, child English-Spanish bilingualism, as measured by child vocabulary (but not mother-reported language use), was associated with higher executive control. Finally, in Study 3, household income was associated with higher executive control, while parenting, cultural values, and acculturative stress were not. The results of these studies suggest that child bilingualism and household income may contribute to executive control in Hispanic children.
