Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a first-year experience course on the academic performance, persistence, and graduation rates of first-semester college students. This study was conducted by analyzing admission and transcript data of first-year students who began their undergraduate studies in the fall of 1998. A total of 681 first-year experience course completers were matched with 681 nonparticipants according to their sex, race, SAT score, high school GPA and intended major. These two groups of similar backgrounds and academic potential were compared using independent samples t -tests, analysis of variance, and Chi-square tests of association. Results indicated that first-year experience course completers from the fall of 1998 achieved a higher mean GPA in their first semester than those of similar characteristics who chose not to take the elective course. Moreover, course completers persisted to their second, third and fourth semesters at greater rates than the group of nonparticipants. Likewise, course completers graduated within four, five and six years of study more than their nonparticipant counterparts. Consequently, the first-year experience course had an overall positive impact on the academic performance, persistence, and graduation rates of first-semester students from the fall of 1998 at a public research university.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the college's student retention numbers pre- and post FYE course implementation and to understand if the efforts to increase student retention had been effective. A sequential mixed methods approach was used for the study and incorporated both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study concludes with an analysis of student persistence rates at a Midwest, two-year public college pre- and post implementation of the GPS course. Results of this study could help identify any gaps in the GPS course or opportunities for improvement in the curriculum or course offerings. This study has implications within continuous improvement efforts related to student retention and persistence by assessing the college's GPS course. The development of a student experience survey for the FYE course could be used in the future as a tool or process to be re-administered to continue to improve the course and reassess its impact on student retention and persistence. The overall findings of the study on the GPS course could be generalized to other public two-year colleges with similar GPS courses.

Book excerpt: This mixed methods study evaluated the perceptions, performance and retention of students participating in the inaugural year of a living-learning program designed to support the needs of underprepared students of color. A survey was distributed to 1,004 FTFT students (N = 278) taking first-year English followed by a focus group (N = 9) to further understand program participant experiences. Institutional data were used to analyze student performance and retention across three comparison groups. This student support program was designed to close the performance and persistence gap for underprepared students of color living in residence at a medium sized university in the California Central Valley. Program participants reported frequent use of professional academic advising and major advising, which had a positive effect on student performance. Utilization of support services, including the writing center, disability resources, peer mentoring, was high among program participants, a positive outcome from program participation. Results of the study indicate the program was successful in closing the gap between students participating in the program and comparable students not participating in the program. Students participating in the program reported higher rates of satisfaction with their support program compared to other students participating in programs without a residential component. Findings indicate faculty mentoring had a positive outcome on student success. Understanding program design and outcomes can inform practitioners of effective Student Affairs and Academic Affairs partnerships with positive impacts to students’ performance and decisions to persist.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this causal-comparative quantitative study was to examine the relationships between the efficacy of a Summer Bridge Academy (SBA) and the impact on students by measuring the Grade Point Averages (GPAs), retention rates, and persistence rates of first-generation, first-year, Latino college students who participated in a SBA at Central Valley Community College against like students who did not participate in same program. The independent variable was participation in a 6 week long SBA, which took place during the summer of 2011. The dependent variables were GPAs, retention rates, and persistence rates, and the control and intervening variables, students who are first-generation, first-year, Latino college students were statistically controlled in this study. This study was guided by the following research questions: (RQ1) Is there a significant difference in academic performance; (RQ2) Is there a significant difference in retention rates; (RQ3) Is there a significant difference in persistence rates of Summer Bridge Academy (SBA) participants against nonparticipants? The data analysis revealed a statistically significant difference in combined Summer and Fall 2011 mean GPA scores between SBA participants and the comparison group. There was no statistically significant difference in Retention and Persistence rates. College success can be defined as the ability for students to continue and persist towards their academic goals and the 2011 SBA failed to bridge the achievement gap.
