Book excerpt: This bibliography is a comprehensive collection of the non-English-language labor and radical periodical publications of the United States and Canada, written for and by immigrants. It is intended to supplement existing studies of the role of individual ethnic groups in the North American working classes, by using a broad comparative approach that takes into account the cultures of origin, migration processes, and specific forms of acculturation in the United States and Canada. It represents the collective efforts of thirty scholars from many cultures, with widely varied experiences, styles of annotation, and scholarly traditions, and includes detailed annotations of all bibliographic entries, as well as title, place, and chronological indexes.

Book excerpt: As in the first volume, entries are divided into individual language sections for ease of reference. Each section begins with general information about the cooperating language specialists, the area where the language was spoken in 1910, and explanation of library and depository symbols, and a section bibliography. Introductory essays survey the development of the labor and radical press as it relates to the particular ethnic group in question. The annotated bibliography contains all periodicals that appeared more than once a year, along with brief descriptions where available. Finally, each section contains complete title, geographical, and chronological indexes to the periodicals included.

Book excerpt: Continuing the work of the first two volumes, the third and final volume of Dirk Hoerder's landmark bibliography covers labor migrants from Southern and Western Europe. As with each of the previous volumes, the aim has been to provide a comprehensive record of the non-English language periodical literature produced by European ethnic groups in North America. The focus throughout is on the labor and radical press to enable the researcher to compare and contrast the experiences of various ethnic groups as part of the North American working class.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most infamous villains in North America during the Progressive Era was the padrone, a mafia-like immigrant boss who allegedly enslaved his compatriots and kept them uncivilized, unmanly, and unfree. In this history of the padrone, first published in 2000, Gunther Peck analyzes the figure's deep cultural resonance by examining the lives of three padrones and the workers they imported to North America. He argues that the padrones were not primitive men but rather thoroughly modern entrepreneurs who used corporations, the labour contract, and the right to quit to create far-flung coercive networks. Drawing on Greek, Spanish, and Italian language sources, Peck analyzes how immigrant workers emancipated themselves using the tools of padrone power to their own advantage.

Book excerpt: The intersection of food and immigration in North America, from the macroscale of national policy to the microscale of immigrants' lived, daily foodways. This volume considers the intersection of food and immigration at both the macroscale of national policy and the microscale of immigrant foodways—the intimate, daily performances of identity, culture, and community through food. Taken together, the chapters—which range from an account of the militarization of the agricultural borderlands of Yuma, Arizona, to a case study of Food Policy Council in Vancouver, Canada—demonstrate not only that we cannot talk about immigration without talking about food but also that we cannot talk about food without talking about immigration. The book investigates these questions through the construct of the immigrant-food nexus, which encompasses the constantly shifting relationships of food systems, immigration policy, and immigrant foodways. The contributors, many of whom are members of the immigrant communities they study, write from a range of disciplines. Three guiding themes organize the chapters: borders—cultural, physical, and geopolitical; labor, connecting agribusiness and immigrant lived experience; and identity narratives and politics, from “local food” to “dietary acculturation.” Contributors Julian Agyeman, Alison Hope Alkon, FernandoJ. Bosco, Kimberley Curtis, Katherine Dentzman, Colin Dring, Sydney Giacalone, Sarah D. Huang, Maryam Khojasteh, Jillian Linton, Pascale Joassart-Marcelli, Samuel C. H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, New Yorkers have been surprised to see workers they had taken for granted—Mexicans in greengroceries, West African supermarket deliverymen and South Asian limousine drivers—striking, picketing, and seeking support for better working conditions. Suddenly, businesses in New York and the nation had changed and were now dependent upon low-paid immigrants to fill the entry-level jobs that few native-born Americans would take. Immigrants, Unions, and the New U.S. Labor Market tells the story of these workers' struggle for living wages, humane working conditions, and the respect due to all people. It describes how they found the courage to organize labor actions at a time when most laborers have become quiescent and while most labor unions were ignoring them. Showing how unions can learn from the example of these laborers, and demonstrating the importance of solidarity beyond the workplace, Immanuel Ness offers a telling look into the lives of some of America's newest immigrants.

Book excerpt: Previously available only in an out-of-print Swedish edition published in 1955, Henry Bengston's firsthand account deals with what historian Dag Blanck calls the "other Swedish America." Swedish immigrants in general were conservative, but Bengston and others--most notably Joe Hill--joined the working-class labor movement on the left, primarily as Debsian socialists, although their ranks included other socialists, communists, and anarchists. Involved in the radical labor movement on many fronts, Bengston was the editor of Svenska Socialisten from 1912 until he dropped out of the Scandinavian Socialist Federation in 1920. Even after 1920, however, his sympathies remained with the movement he had once strongly espoused.
