Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenot, Vol. 2 of 2: A Tale of the French Protestants The request for an udience was conveyed through the M uis of Seigne ai, with whom the count himself was we] acquainted; and he doubted not that it would be granted immediately, if he had preceded, -as he had every reason to believe he had, the ordinary courier from Poitou, bringing the news of the events which had taken place in that province. The letter of the young secretary, in retum to his application, arrived the next morning; but it was cold and formal, and evidently written under the immediate dictation of the king. Lt merely notified to the count that, for the next three days, the time appointed by his majesty for business would be fully occupied; that, in the mean time, if the business which brought the count to Paris were impor tant, he would communicate it to the minister under whose department it came. The note went on to add, that if the business were not one requiring immediate despatch, the young count would do well to come to Versailles, to signify the place of his abode at the palace, and to wait the monarch's leisure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenot, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale of the French Protestants Albert of Morseiul saw that Clemence was much moved, and he prepared to soothe her by every means in his power. The only effica cions means being to draw her attention to ordinary things. Let me offer you my arm, he said in a kindly tone and leading her on, he spoke of the beauty of the morning, and then of Anette de Marville, and then of other in different things. Clemence seemed to under stand his object; and though she at first smiled, as if to intimate that she did so, she gave her mind up to his guidance, and for five or ten minutes touched upon no subject but the most ordinary topics of conversation. Under its power, the visions, and hopes, and indistinct dreams, which had fluttered before the eyes of the Count de Morseiul during the magic moments he had passed with Clemence de Marly, fled like fairies at the approach of the sun, within a very short period after he had retired to his chamber; and all that remained was a sort of reproachful mournfulness, when he thought over his own conduct and the indulgence of those feelings which he feared he had displayed but too plainly. Book excerpt: This extensively-researched two-volume series offers a detailed account of "the coming of the persecuted Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces [New England] now comprehended within the United States....The volumes now submitted to the public treat first of these antecedent movements, and then take up the narrative of the events that led to the more considerable and more effective emigration, in the latter years of the seventeenth century." This very readable narrative history is rich with details about persons, places and events. Much of the information preserved on these pages was gleaned from unpublished documents found in the United States, France and England: "Manuscripts in the possession of the descendants of refugees; memorials, petitions, wills, and other papers on file in public offices;" as well as numerous church records and other original documents. Volume II includes: The Revocation: Flight from Saintonge, (Poitou and Touraine); The Revocation: Flight from the Northern Provinces (Bretagne, Picardy, Orleanais, Maine, the Ile de France, and Berri); The Revocation: Flight from the Eastern and Southern Provinces (Lorraine, Champagne, Lyonnais, Languedoc, Dauphiny, Languedoc, Guyenne, and the Comte de Foix); The Refuge: England; The Emigration: On the High Seas; and The Settlements: Boston, Oxford, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Illustrations, maps, and an appendix enhance the text. An index to full-names, places and subjects for both volumes is contained in this volume.
