Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Life of Jesus of Nazareth &C Yet how little do we know concerning the wonderful events transacted there, we who would gladly know so much. How shall Christians penetrate the mysteries Of N azareth, - that village or mountain-town, and yet city in Scripture.phraseology, - diflicult of access in all senses, the place itself remote, set in a hollow on a mountain side? We may indeed visit the modern town of Nazareth at this present time, and'happy are they who can do so. Men can even drink at will from the very fountain, it may be, at which Mary filled her pitcher. But how conjure Nazareth back to the eye Of faith as it appeared when inhabited by the Saviour of the world P How perceive Him, the Saviour, the Messias yet uh revealed, labouring in the workshop, or conversing with His mother and foster-father, or studying the law and. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus of Nazareth: A Study The aim Of this book is to help thoughtful readers of the gospels to discern more clearly the features of him whom those writings inimitably portray. It is avowedly a study rather than a story, and as a companion to the reading of the gospels it seeks to answer some of the questions which are raised by a sympathetic considera tion Of those narratives. These answers are Offered in an unargumentative way, even where the questions are still in debate among scholars. This method has been adopted because technical discussion would be of inter est to but few of those whom the book hopes to serve. On some Of the questions a non - committal attitude is taken in the belief that for the understanding of the life of Jesus it is of little importance which way the decision finally goes. Less attention has been given to questions Of geography and archaeology than to those which have a more vital biographical significance. A word concerning the point of view adopted. The church has inherited a rich treasure Of doctrine concern ing its Lord, the result of patient study and, frequently, of heated controversy. It is customary to approach the gospels with this interpretation of Christ as a premise, and such a study has some unquestionable advantages. First, to bring into prominence the Manliness of Jesus, to give point and emphasis to that saying of Paul's which declares that Jesus was in all points tempted like as we are; and second, to fill up that gap in the record of Jesus' life which includes and shuts us out from all its formative period, and which, in large part, must necessarily be the source and basis of whatever he said and did. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth: The Story of His Life Simply Told The pressure of an earnest invitation sent me from America must be my excuse for venturing to add another Life of Christ for the Young to the excellent ones already existing. The aim proposed is to strengthen faith in our Lord's Divinity, and to draw the hearts of children to Him by a personal love. To do this within the limits assigned, it has seemed better to omit a certain amount of matter rather than sacrifice detailed descriptions of leading facts, which by impressing the imagination leave a vivid picture in the mind. Where different views, as to chronology, etc., prevail, I have adopted the one supported by the greater number of Catholic authors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth A long time ago there was a carpenter who lived in a little town called Nazareth. His tools were simple and few, and the wood he had to work with was poor, so that he could not do the fine work carpenters do nowadays. His name was Joseph, and he was quite poor. But he married a girl named Mary, and lived humbly and contentedly in his little house in Nazareth. Mary would do the simple housework and would spin flax or grind barley, while Joseph worked busily with his tools, and so they got along quite nicely. One day Mary was made very happy by God whispering in her heart that she should very soon have a little child. That was good news to Mary, and, as she thought about it, she determined that she would name her baby "Jesus." Now, some time after Mary had learned this good news, Joseph came home one day and said they should have to go to Bethlehem, another town, on some matter of business. So he saddled his patient little donkey, and put Mary on its back, and took his staff, and set out for Bethlehem. But when they reached Bethlehem, he found that there was no room for them in any house or at the inn. So he went into a little stable of the inn, where the cattle lived, and he and Mary lay down in the sweet hay to sleep. That very night, as they lay sleeping on the hay in the stable, the little baby was born. The good news had at last come true, and Mary was very happy indeed. She laid her little baby-boy in a manger, a trough out of which the animals ate their hay and grain, which made a very cosy crib for him. The maps in this book were made for it by General Henry B. Car rington of the U. S. Regular Army. Retired. General Carrington's maps in his battles OF the revolution are standard. He has long been engaged on a work on the battles OF the bible. And has brought to these maps the results of his long Bible study, and has used the latest surveys. His effort has been to eliminate every unnecessary detail. And present accurately and clearly the places associated with the ministry of Jesus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Extra-Canonical Life of Christ: Being a Record of the Acts and Sayings of Jesus of Nazareth Drawn From Uninspired Sources I make no apology for bringing a work of this kind before the public, because it fills a gap in Jesus-Literature. The number of the lives of Jesus is legion, and each has its own peculiarity. One is written from a positive, another from a negative standpoint; one is constructive, another destructive; one is popular, another scientific. There are those who find the evangelical history in Buddhistic sources like R. Seydel (das Evangelium von Jesu in seinem Verhalinis zur Buddha-Sage und Lehre, Leipzig, 1882; die Buddha-Legende und das Leben Jesu, 1884; 2d ed. 1897), and N. Notowitsch (die Lucke im Leben Jesu, Stuttgart, 1894), and those who have treated the life of Jesus for socialistic-atheistic propaganda like D. Nieuwenhuis, G. Lommel. E. Wurm, F. Engels, et. al. (on which compare H. Kohler, Sozialistische Irrlehren ucer die Entstehung des Christentums, Leipzig, 1889).
