Book excerpt: "The History of the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps" traces the evolution of the corps from its origins during the American Revolution, through its stages of growth and transformation into a separate professional element of the military medical establishment in 1947 and its steady progress during the postwar and Cold War years, to its status in 1994. The lessons of the Medical Service Corps' history are rooted in America's wartime experiences, and they are important ones for future leaders to learn for ensuring continued progress for MSC officers who represent the growth in medical science and military medical operations and administration.

Download or read book An Equal Burden written by Jessica Meyer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Equal Burden is the first scholarly study of the Army Medical Services in the First World War to focus on the roles and experiences of the men of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). Though they were not professional medical caregivers, they were called upon to provide urgent medical care and, as non-combatants, were forbidden from carrying weapons. Their role in the war effort was quite unique and warranting of further study. Structured both chronologically and thematically, An Equal Burden examines the work that RAMC rankers undertook and its importance to the running of the chain of medical evacuation. It additionally explores the gendered status of these men within the medical, military, and cultural hierarchies of a society engaged in total war. Through close readings of official documents, personal papers, and cultural representations, Meyer argues that the ranks of the RAMC formed a space in which non-commissioned servicemen, through their many roles, defined and redefined medical caregiving as men's work in wartime.

Book Synopsis Getting the message through: A Branch History of the U.S. Army Signal Corps by : Rebecca Robbins Raines
Download or read book Getting the message through: A Branch History of the U.S. Army Signal Corps written by Rebecca Robbins Raines and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.
