Of the remaining sixty-nine Cardinals, sixty-two were in Rome at the time of the Pope's death; seven were absent. These were: Cueva, Sandoval, Mazarin, Filomarino, Durazzo, Frederick of Hesse, and Harrach, but the four last-named reached Rome in time to take part in the conclave. Only two of the sixty-six electors, viz. Carlo Medici and Aloisi Capponi, dated from the reign of Paul V., whilst one half of the rest had been created by Urban VIII. and the remainder by Innocent X.
