Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the English Language As regards the subject of nomenclature, I have seen no reason to alter essentially that which was employed in the previous editions. On one point in particular, action has not been taken unadvisedly. I have exam ined with care everything accessible on the subject, and, I think, nearly everything that has been published, and the more I have read, the less I have been im pressed with the force of the arguments against the use of the term anglo-saxon. I have therefore te tained it in this work, as furnishing what is all-impor tant in nomenclature, a term which, once understood, can never be misunderstood. It is very noticeable that those who are most violently opposed to its use, not unfrequently resort to it when they wish to define with absolute precision what they mean when they apply the term Old English to a particular period in the history of the language. There are, indeed, advantages and disadvantages connected with any terminology that may be adopted. It is certainly an argument in favor of the designation as Old English of what is here called anglo-saxon, that it makes promi nent the continuity of our speech. It is an objection to it that, besides the inevitable ambiguity of the epi thet old, ' it suggests wrong ideas as to the nature of that continuity. Still it would be folly to attach impor tance to this particular subject. It is only those who magnify matters of minor consequence that will con sider the question as one of much moment. I have. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of the English Language If the sole function of language is the communication of thought it follows that every development of thought will produce also a development of language. What we require of language is, therefore, no small thing. We require of it that it shall give expression to every human activity, high and low, good and bad; that it shall render all human knowledge, human emotion, human faith and human ambitions; for the creative impulse in man will never rest until it has found its appropriate expression in words or deeds. We expect of language, therefore, that it shall give expression to every possible development of human thought, and the history of the literature in any particular language is the most convincing proof possible that language rises to the occasion and satisfies those demands. It is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. It seems to solve the diffi culty with which each teacher of Old English is confronted, that of finding a text which is of proper size to use in an ordinary College course in Old English without infringing too much upon time which belongs more particularly to grammatical study and to reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of the English Language The substance of the following chapters was delivered, in the form of County Council lectures, in London during the sessions 1907 - 9, and subsequently at the Summer School, St. Andrew's. It is hoped that the book will serve to introduce students of English to the somewhat neglected background of their studies. In the interest of these a certain amount of specialised material has been introduced, without, it is hoped, impairing the readableness of the book for the general public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the English Language In Part V some advantageous changes in order have been made. The most noticeable Of these is in treating the weak verbs before the strong. This order, while not adopted in the larger work, is quite in accord with the plan of both; namely, to give prominence to those elements of the lan guage which have been most stable and most important. The weak verbs were not only more numerous than the strong in the oldest period, but have increased in number and influence at the expense of the latter. Besides, the present arrangement not only emphasizes the more regular weak class, but also brings together all the less regular classes, an advantage in itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language: Its Grammar, History and Literature It is hoped that the book will prove useful in high schools, academies, and seminaries, as well as to candidates for teachers' examinations and civil service examinations. The various topics have been prepared upon the assumption that the stu dent has already studied a part of the work in an elementary form. The most salient features of the language have been de scribed, and minor details have been left for the teacher to fill in as needed. The utmost clearness and simplicity have been the aim of the writer, and he has been obliged to sacrifice many interesting details to this aim. The study of English grammar is necessarily becoming more and more historical. '1' here are scores of in ections and constructions and idioms which cannot be truly or adequately explained without a reference to the past states of the language, to the time when it was a synthetic or in ected language, like German or Latin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the History of the English Language for the Use of Teacher and Student Since the first appearance of this work the field of English philology has been sedulously cultivated by many able writers both at home and abroad. It may be sufficient here to mention Koch's 'Historische Grammatik, ' 1869; Matzner's 'Englische Grammatik, ' 1865;Marsh's 'English Language, ' 1862;Helfenstein's 'Comparative Grammar of the Teutonic Languages, ' 1870; Dr. Abbott's 'Shakspearian Grammar, ' 1870; Dr. Morris's 'Historical Outlines, ' 1873;A. J.Ellis's great work on 'Early English Pronunciation, ' 1868-75; and the important Transactions of the Chaucer and Early English d104 Societies. These and several other recent works have been consulted in the preparation of the present edition, which thus embodies much fresh matter in further illustration of the successive steps by which the English tongue has arrived at its present state. Some may possibly affect surprise that no change has been made in the nomenclature, and that the terms Saxon and Anglo-Saxon are still retained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature This Book is an attempt on the part of its Author to supply an acknowledged want. It is true that class-books on the subject of English Literature are both numerous and important; but they are usually of such a character as to render them all but unintelligible to any except the most advanced classes. There are others, indeed, which are wonderfully picturesque in style; but which, for that very reason, are unsuitable for the work of the school-room, since the space usually allotted to description is greatly in excess of that which is devoted to facts, and such books are extremely difficult to examine upon. Now, as it seems to the Author, there is no good reason why English Literature should not be made available to junior classes, so that in the end their grasp of the subject may be rendered more complete and satisfactory than can be the case with the present text-books. In this book, therefore, by studied simplicity of treatment, it is sought to provide the junior pupil with tasks he will find easy to prepare, and the teacher with lessons he will find easy to examine. In the arrangement of the periods of literature, the best authorities have been followed; and, in dealing with authors, the plan adopted has been to give, first, a brief biographical sketch; then, when feasible, a short analysis of a principal work; and, lastly, a few observations on the leading characteristics of style. It will be found that more attention has been paid to the works than to the life of an author, additional information on the latter subject being left to the discretion of the teacher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language and Its Grammar In view of such a necessity in high and normal schools, the author combines in this book the history and derivation of English forms of speech with an analysis of the language and its functions. If the technical terms (which are employed because only by them can the science of language he presented) are mastered in the beginning, the student will find no difficulty in following the author's method to'the end. It will be easy to trace the logical consistency of the language with itself, and the harmony of its develop ment, which together give our glorious English tongue its expansive and expressive power. It will also be ap parent how this language has been able to subordinate all the accidents of an increasing vocabulary to the normal functions of a generous and flexible continuity of life. While this book is especially designed for normal and training schools and teacher-training classes in high schools, it is hoped that it will be found. Valuable as a means of self-help to large numbers of teachers who are striving to secure a better preparation for their work. It is thought that it is also well adapted for use in the summer schools which are now so prominent a fea ture of the educational work of the country.
