Book Synopsis A History Of Scotland by : Neil Oliver
Download or read book A History Of Scotland written by Neil Oliver and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic story of Scotland - by charismatic television historian, Neil Oliver. Scotland is one of the oldest countries in the world with a vivid and diverse past. Yet the stories and figures that dominate Scottish history - tales of failure, submission, thwarted ambition and tragedy - often badly serve this great nation, overshadowing the rich tapestry of her intricate past. Historian Neil Oliver presents a compelling new portrait of Scottish history, peppered with action, high drama and centuries of turbulence that have helped to shape modern Scotland. Along the way, he takes in iconic landmarks and historic architecture; debunks myths surrounding Scotland's famous sons; recalls forgotten battles; charts the growth of patriotism; and explores recent political developments, capturing Scotland's sense of identity and celebrating her place in the wider world.

Book Synopsis A History Book for Scots by : Walter Bower
Download or read book A History Book for Scots written by Walter Bower and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riveting selections from a 15-century account of Scottish history, one of Scotland’s national treasures. Writing on a small island in the Firth of Forth in the 1440s, Walter Bower set out to tell the whole story of the Scottish nation in a single huge book, the Scotichronicon— “a history book for Scots.” It begins with the mythical voyage of Scota, the Pharaoh’s daughter, from Egypt with the Stone of Destiny. The land that her sons discovered in the Western Ocean was named after her: Scotland. It then describes the turbulent events that followed, among them the wars of the Scots and the Picts (begun by a quarrel over a dog); the poisoning of King Fergus by his wife; Macbeth’s usurpation and uneasy reign; the good deeds of Margaret, queen and saint; Bruce’s murder of the Red Comyn; the founding of Scotland’s first university at St. Andrews; the “Burnt Candlemas;” and the endless troubles between Scotland and England. Weaving in and out of the events of Bower’s factual history are other subjects that fascinated him: harrowing visions of hell and purgatory, extraordinary miracles; the exploits of knights and beggars, merchants and monks; the ravages of flood and fire; the terrors of the plague; and the answers to such puzzling questions as what makes a good king, and why Englishmen have tails. This monumental work, in which the original Latin text appears side by side with a translation in modern English, was completed in 1998. It includes an introduction and notes that guide the reader through the complexities of Bower’s history and its background.

Download or read book The History of Scotland, Vol. 1 written by Thomas Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Scotland, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time AT the period when Britain was invaded by Julius Caesar, it was inhabited by a variety of separate and independent tribes, which were not all of the same race or equally civilised. The population of the wooded districts in the interior was naturally wilder and more barbarous than the inhabitants of the ma ritime parts, which were, from an early period, in continual intercourse with the still more cultivated peoples of Gaul, and the forests and mountains of the north must have harboured a race less civilised than either. The Romans, after the expedition under Claudius, spent nearly forty years in subduing the southern Britons, before they came in contact with the Caledonians. In the year 80 of the Christian era, Julius Agricola first carried the Roman arms into what is now termed Scotland, and subju gated the country south of the narrow isthmus formed by the Clyde and the Forth. Book excerpt: 'Informed, impeccably researched and written' Neil Oliver The Celts are one of the world's most mysterious ancient people. In this compelling account, Alice Roberts takes us on a journey across Europe, uncovering the truth about this engimatic tribe: their origins, their treasure and their enduring legacy today. What emerges is not a wild people, but a highly sophisticated tribal culture that influenced the ancient world - and even Rome. It is the story of a multicultural civilization, linked by a common language. It is the story of how ideas travelled in prehistory, how technology and art spread across the continent. It is the story of a five-hundred year fight between two civilizations that came to define the world we live in today. It is the story of a culture that changed Europe forever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Chronicles of Scotland, Vol. 1 HE early part of the Literary History of Scotland is involved in much ob scurity, and has not been investigated with a due share either of care or of candour. Many eminent writers who adorned the reigns of the Stuarts du ring the fifteenth and sixteenth centu ries, are now in a great measure unknown or forgotten. The difficulties these early writers had to encounter, from the limited sources of information which they possessed, - the absence of authentic records to guide them in their researches, - the romantic and fabulous times of which they wrote, - and the want of science to operate as a check up on credulity, seem entirely to have escaped those critics by whom their labours have been depreciated, and their claims to the gratitude of posterity denied.
