Excerpt: ... consolidated into one company and transferred to the 2d Regiment, to which Capt. B. was transferred as their commanding officer, and served some months in that regiment. After the war he was made U. S. Inspector and settled in Richmond, Va. He d. suddenly, of apoplexy, July 26, 1880. The Richmond Dispatch says of him: "Capt. B. was widely known, much respected and greatly beloved. He came to us fresh from service in the Union army, as an officer in the internal revenue service, and soon became very popular in business and social relations. He was a man of very brilliant talents, a popular speaker, and a poet of much merit; he was also prominent as a politician, but never offensively so. On Confederate Memorial Day he delivered the address at Oakwood cemetery, which was replete with tender feeling and patriotism. Genial, warm-hearted, sympathetic, all who came within the range of his acquaintance seemed irresistibly drawn towards him. Few men--certainly none of northern birth and of his political opinions -- ever had more numerous or more sincere friends among all classes of the community. * * * The news of his death was soon circulated, and his body lying in state at St. Alban's hall was visited by a large number, among all of whom pervaded a feeling of great sorrow, at the untimely ending of a career that promised so brightly." Of this old family, now almost extinct in town, it may be said their virtues were of the plain old-fashioned sort; loyal to country and kin, strong in their attachments, modest, brave, industrious, kind and unselfish; generous to friend or foe, hospitable -- never seeking official position. The first generation served long and faithfully, from a sense of duty, in the early Indian and French wars; the second and...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of a woman hanged in colonial Portsmouth for burying her stillborn out-of-wedlock baby. On a cold December morning in 1768, thirty-one-year-old Ruth Blay approached the gallows for her execution. Standing on the high ground in the northwest corner of what is now Portsmouth’s old South Cemetery, she would have had a clear view across the pasture to the harbor and open sea. The eighteenth-century hanging of a schoolteacher for concealing the birth of a child out of wedlock has appeared in local legend over the last few centuries, but the full account of Ruth’s story has never been told. Drawing on over two years of investigative research, author Carolyn Marvin brings to light the dramatic details of Ruth’s life and the cruel injustice of colonial Portsmouth’s moral code. As Marvin uncovers the real flesh-and-blood woman who suffered the ultimate punishment, her readers come to understand Ruth as an individual and a woman of her time.

Book excerpt: The purpose of "Voices from a Wilderness Expedition" is to reawaken the now silent voices of the brave men who made the historic 1775 march through the Maine wilderness with Benedict Arnold to attack Quebec and conquer Canada. This book is not a chronological history of the expedition, but rather offers details and new information about the lives of the men who participated and, equally important, the journals that chronicaled the hardships of the march. It contains significant new information on both the men and the journals that has never been published. The book features: * First ever bibliography of all prntings of thirty journals written by participants * Three newly discovered journals found in the University of Glasgow Library * Two never before published journals written by privates on the expedition * New biographical information on seven officers * Examination of the career of Col. Roger Enos whose 3 companies left early to return to Cambridge * Identification of Capt Scott, a previously unknown company commander * Transcription of 2nd Isaac Senter journal * Comprehensive roster of names of 1124 officers and men who were on the expedition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Webster captured the hearts and imagination of the American people of the first half of the nineteenth century. This bibliography on Webster brings together for the first time a comprehensive guide to the vast amount of literature written by and about this extraordinary man who dwarfed most of his contemporaries. This bibliography also provides references to materials on slavery, the tariff, banking, Indian affairs, legal and constitutional development, international affairs, western expansion, and economic and political developments in general. This bibliography is divided into fifteen sections and covers every aspect of Webster's distinguished career. Sections I and II deal primarily with Webster's writings and with those of his contemporaries. Sections III through X cover the literature dealing with his family background; childhood and education, his long service in the United States House of Representatives and in the Senate, his two stints as secretary of state, and his career in law. Section X provides guidance in locating materials relating to his associates. Finally, Sections XI through XV provide coverage of his personal life, his death, historiographical materials, and iconography.
