Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Methodism in South Carolina The South Carolina Conference, at its session held in Chester, December, 1876, formally requested the Rev. Albert M. Shipp, D.D., to write the History of Methodism in South Carolina. This he consented to do after the expiration of some four or five years deemed necessary for a due preparation for the new work in Yanderbilt University, upon which he had entered the year before. In the summer and autumn of the year 1880 ho was able to write the History as requested, and mDecember following, presented the manuscript to the South Carolina Conference in session at Marion. A committee of six members was appointed by the Conference to receive it, and, after such examination of the work as time allowed, made the following report: The committee appointed to receive the History of Methodism in the South Carolina Conference, which has been prepared by the Rev. A.M. Shipp, D. D., at the request of the Conference, beg leave to report: They have looked over the manuscript as carefully as their limited time would permit, and they are happy to say, in their judgment, it is in every way worthy the hearty indorsement of the Conference. The plan is comprehensive. It runs back to the settlement of the State, and takes into its general outline the religious and civil histories of those early times; then stretches down to late? periods, and weaves into the biographies of the heroes of the Church those glorious achievements and thrilling personal adventures which make the History of Methodism in South Carolina more marvelous than romance. Two points strike the committee with force. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Pioneers of Methodism in North Carolina and Virginia I was sent to school early, and began to read the Bible between six and seven years of age, and greatly delighted in the historical part of it. My school-master was a great churl, and used to beat me cruellv. This drove me to prayer, and it appeared to me that God was near to me. My father having but one son, greatly desired to keep me at school, he cared not how long; but in this design he was disappointed, for my master, by his severity, had filled me with such hor rible dread that with me any thing was preferable to going to school. I lived some time in one of the wealthiest and most ungodly families we had in the parish. Here I be came vain, but not openly wicked. Some months after this I returned home, and made my choice, when about thirteen years and a half old, to learn a branch of business, at which I wrought. About six years and a half, during which time I enjoyed great liberty, and in the family was treated more like a son or an equal than an apprentice.
