Book excerpt: Forged through time by varied cultures and numerous crises, Logan County provides an intriguing landscape that has nurtured equally intriguing people. In 1774, after the death of their beloved Chief Cornstalk, a tribe of Shawnee Indians led by his daughter, Princess Aracoma, settled into the area. From meager beginnings, the region began to grow, and in 1824, Logan County was formed and named in honor of Chief Logan, head of the Mingo tribe. By the late 1870s, during the height of the timber and coal industries, it was known as home to the Hatfields of the infamous feud. In 1921, Logan became the backdrop of the Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest armed labor confrontation in United States history. Logan County has had more than its share of coal mine disasters, labor uprisings, flash flood tragedies, and shady political shenanigans, but it has always been a naturally beautiful and, for the most part, peaceful place to live and raise a family. It has a fascinating past that is well worth revisiting.

Book excerpt: As one of Kentucky's oldest counties, Logan County has a colorful history. Residents found religion at the Red River Meeting House during the Second Great Awakening. However, the land once known as Rogue's Harbor has been wrought with lawlessness. Visitors to the county today can tour the bank in the county seat of Russellville where the infamous Jesse James started his robbing spree in 1868. Tourists and residents alike are regaled with stories of a dueling Andrew Jackson and countless corrupt elections. Four men went on to become governors, while a fifth attempt fell short despite an infamous campaign. All of these things are documented in Images of America: Logan County along with the less controversial events in history: the everyday farmers who raised their cash crop of tobacco to contribute to a growing community and the establishment of the most southwestern of the Shaker communities at South Union.

Otto and Sheed are back in yet another legendary adventure that just might take all their deduction skills, and a little help, to solve. With their journey through the last mirror on the left behind them, Otto and Sheed are ready for things to get back to normal. But their trip to that other dimension had side effects, and they come on quickly—starting with a thunderstorm that rains carnivorous frogs! And that's only the beginning. When a suspicious company called GOO, obsessed with Logan County's weirdness, shows up and starts buying all the property in town—and threatening to take Sheed away from Otto—some of the adults start acting stranger than usual, almost… zombie-like? With the help of Otto's mom, Sheed's dad, and the Epic Ellison twins, can the Legendary Alston Boys find a way to save their town and keep their family together?

Book excerpt: Upon his death, John Warwick, a Quaker in Lynchburg, Virginia, freed his seventy-five slaves. Virginia law required that freed people had to be moved to a free state and supplied for one year. This law was designed to discourage freeing slaves. Warwick was buried in an unmarked grave to protect his remains from protesting whites. I learned about this story when a descendant of one of the freed people came to my daughter's farmhouse that had been built on the foundation of the Warwick plantation. The new Virginia turnpike was the route followed by their wagon train toward Indiana, the state named in the will. The people were constantly confronted with questions about who they were and where they were going. Their journey was difficult in the winter in the mountains of what now is West Virginia. Slave catchers followed them with the intent to capture some of the people to sell them back into slavery. When they got to Ohio, they faced a tax of five hundred dollars each. Could they help runaway slaves find a station on the Underground Railroad? The free people had to decide whether to trek on to Indiana and face pending antiblack immigration legislation or settle in Ohio. The executor bought a large parcel of land in John Warwick's name on the southwest corner of Indian Lake, Ohio. What would happen when the lake was raised? They were told that blacks had no standing in court to challenge the action. How many of the new community died from malaria? A school was started under separate but equal laws. A wonderful first official marriage recognized by Ohio was celebrated. Were black soldiers treated the same as white soldiers in the Civil War? The Price of Freedom in 1848 was high . . . and is still being paid today.

There are descriptions of the country, the natives, the animals, plus later developments after the arrival of the Europeans, with personal treatment of many individuals. - Publisher.

Worthington suspected rich mineral resources lay beneath the rolling hills, and he reasoned the area could grow and flourish. In his diary he wrote, "27 June 1816. I begin to lay out a town 1 mile east of the Falls." The coming of the canal in 1840 was instrumental in the growth of the small county-seat village. Prosperity improved when coal mining and clay manufacturing dominated the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Logan and Hocking County is a look at the past, present, and hopeful future of this typical small-town community in southeastern Ohio.
