The Indian inhabitants and the coming of the French. Indiana became one of the United States in 1816. Her first white visitors a century and a half earlier, under the leader ship of the French explorer La Salle, found here a wooded wilderness in the undisturbed possession of Indians, who lived on such products of the soil as they could cultivate without tools and on the game they secured with traps and arrows. Soon the Jesuit missionaries began to come, one at a time, entering the Indiana country from Lake Erie by way of the Maumee River, carrying their light canoes over a nine-mile portage through the woods near what is now Fort Wayne, and reembarking upon the Wabash River to follow it to its mouth. Other adventurous French priests found their way from the northeast to the headwaters of the Ohio River, and, drifting with its rapid current as far as the Illinois border, pushed up the Wabash to where Lafayette now stands. To their superiors in Quebec and in far-off France these devoted men carried back their story of a race of intelligent and hospitable natives who lived in the rich Indiana valleys and had not yet begun to hate or fear the white invader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jo B. Paoletti's journey through the history of children's clothing began when she posed the question, "When did we start dressing girls in pink and boys in blue?" To uncover the answer, she looks at advertising, catalogs, dolls, baby books, mommy blogs and discussion forums, and other popular media to examine the surprising shifts in attitudes toward color as a mark of gender in American children's clothing. She chronicles the decline of the white dress for both boys and girls, the introduction of rompers in the early 20th century, the gendering of pink and blue, the resurgence of unisex fashions, and the origins of today's highly gender-specific baby and toddler clothing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long regarded as a center for middle-American values, Indiana is also a cultural crossroads that has produced a rich and complex legal and constitutional heritage. The History of Indiana Law traces this history through a series of expert articles by identifying the themes that mark the state’s legal development and establish its place within the broader context of the Midwest and nation. The History of Indiana Law explores the ways in which the state’s legal culture responded to—and at times resisted—the influence of national legal developments, including the tortured history of race relations in Indiana. Legal issues addressed by the contributors include the Indiana constitutional tradition, civil liberties, race, women’s rights, family law, welfare and the poor, education, crime and punishment, juvenile justice, the role of courts and judiciary, and landmark cases. The essays describe how Indiana law has adapted to the needs of an increasingly complex society. The History of Indiana Law is an indispensable reference and invaluable first source to learn about law and society in Indiana during almost two centuries of statehood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book excerpt: Readers of Indiana’s Timeless Tales – Pre-History to 1781 will discover a wealth of early Indiana history with this timeline of events that cover Indiana history from prehistory up until the formation of the Northwest Territory. Journal of Events During this era, settlements in the future state of Indiana were sparse. Vincennes, Indiana's oldest city, was established in 1702 as a French Trading Post. By the time of the Revolutionary War, Britain had taken possession as a prize won during the French and Indian War. George Rogers Clark George Rogers Clark's 1778 - 79 campaign had wrested this vast territory from Britain during the Revolutionary War. Clark and his men's heroics ensured that the region would be ceded to the United States at the 1783 Treaty of Paris, which ended the war. George Rogers Clark would spend most of his last days at the town named after him in southern Indiana. Beginning of the Frontier The end of the war brought new pressures upon the native population, as American pioneers began eyeing the rich lands of the Ohio River Valley. As the Revolution ended the story of Indiana history began. History, timeline, indiana pioneer, history journal, frontier history, George Rogers Clark,
