Book excerpt: Never before seen photographs depict the interesting history of Delaware Horse Racing. Although Delaware is a small state, it has a rich history of horse-related activities, one of them being horse racing. From the early 1900s, horses have been used for various reasons, including farm work, means of transportation, pasture ornament, pleasure riding, and the popular sport of horse racing. Delaware Horse Racing takes the reader back decades to the good old days of popular tracks, such as Brandywine Raceway, Georgetown Raceway, Delaware Park Raceway, Dover Downs Raceway, and Harrington Raceway, where Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds raced hard and fast on half-mile and five-eighths-mile dirt tracks. Gathered from the collections of horsemen and horsewomen, previously unpublished historical photographs show legendary owners, trainers, drivers, and racehorses.

Book Synopsis The Golden Age of New Jersey Horse Racing by : Linda Dougherty
Download or read book The Golden Age of New Jersey Horse Racing written by Linda Dougherty and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-02-20 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After being banned for nearly half a century, thoroughbred horse racing in New Jersey came back to life with a vengeance in 1942. Thus began the "Golden Age" of racing in the Garden State, a period when huge crowds cheered on champion horses and the sport's popularity was at its zenith. Meet the four men - Amory L. Haskell, Eugene Mori, John B. Kelly, Sr. (the father of Princess Grace of Monaco) and former New York Jets owner David "Sonny" Werblin - who were the driving forces behind Monmouth Park, Garden State Park, Atlantic City Race Course and the Meadowlands. Linda Dougherty offers an in-depth history of the sport's evolution from 1942 through the mid-1990s, focusing on the men, the beautiful racetracks and the excitement of those early years. Join Dougherty as she sheds light on one of New Jersey's most venerable sports traditions. Within this book are the following sections: Garden State Park - Built largely with wood during the early years of World War II by Eugene Mori, the Camden racetrack enjoyed big crowds and hosted top horses until it was destroyed by fire in 1977. A new glittering Garden was later rebuilt and hosted both thoroughbred and harness racing until it closed for good in 2001. Monmouth Park - Known as the "Jewel of the Jersey Shore," Monmouth has a long and storied history that dates back to 1870. Although the state banned pari-mutuel wagering at the turn of the century, a new Monmouth reopened in 1946 under the guidance of Amory L. Haskell. Atlantic City Race Course - Celebrities, politicians and a slew of equine stars came to the "World's Playground" during the 1940s through the 1960s. John B. Kelly, Sr., an Olympic rower and father of Princess Grace of Monaco, was the driving force behind the picturesque south Jersey oval. Meadowlands - Built in the north Jersey marshlands just a few miles from Manhattan, Meadowlands Racetrack hosted "big nights under the lights" for both harness and thoroughbred racing. David A. "Sonny" Werblin, best known for his ownership of the N. Y. Jets, helped bring the Big M to life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically Tennessees horse breeding industry has received recognition for producing prized Thoroughbred racehorses, smooth-gaited Tennessee Walking horses, and sturdy work mules. Historical accounts, however, largely overlook the contributions of Tennessee horse breeders to the sport of Arabian horse racing. One hundred years have passed since anti-gambling legislation ended Tennessees reign over the sport of kings, Thoroughbred horse racing. However, the state has figured prominently in the development of Arabian horse racing. Leading up to the inaugural race event in 1959, and in more recent years as the amateur recreation became a bona fide sport, Tennesseans have had a calculable effect on the creation and advancement of Arabian horse racing in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kirkwood Highway is an almost six-mile portion of State Route 2 in New Castle County, Delaware. Built as a bypass of Marshallton after the opening of Delaware Park at Stanton in 1937, it was meant to provide Wilmington-area horse-racing fans a straighter and faster route to the track. It is named after a distinguished officer of the American Revolution, Robert Kirkwood Jr., who was born at his family's farm along Polly Drummond Hill Road in Newark in 1756. Since it opened to automobile traffic, the highway has undergone numerous renovations and the scenery along its route has changed dramatically. Today, it is the fifth-busiest roadway in the state and is lined by shopping centers, national retailers, fast-food and chain restaurants, gas stations, subdivisions, and historic sites. Through vintage photographs, Along the Kirkwood Highway takes a nostalgic look back at the travel corridor, its cross streets, and familiar sites along its path.
