Its stories will vanish forever unless secured in this generation. This little book of mine is also a plea for the help of those who have materials about the town. It is a peculiar idea that tomorrow can be faced without trying to understand the past. The man with no roots is bound to repeat his ancestors' errors. In a few years I would like to publish a complete history of the town, hardbound and about 300 pages in length. Anything you can do to provide me with stories for it will be warmly received. Download or read book The Bridgewater Book (Classic Reprint) written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bridgewater Book For some years before the Civil War in England there was a large migration of Puritans to New England, who lovingly transplanted many of their Cherished customs and even the names of the towns and villages where they had lived, so that their homes in this wilderness across the ocean might as much as possible remind them of their old homes in their mother land. Somersetshire had long been famous for its adventurous mariners and merchants, and the Puritans were numerous in this town and its neighborhood. It is said that our Taunton in Massachusetts was named in compliment to one of its early settlers, Miss Elizabeth Poole, who was born near the English Taunton; and it is probable that our Bridgewater, being settled soon after Taunton, was named on account of the home affection of some of its first inhabitants. Mitchells and Hoopers and Bryants and Allens were prominent citizens in the English town, these names being found in the lists of mayors and members of Parliament; and they are also familiar names in the history of our New England town. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epitaphs in Old Bridgewater, Massachusetts We now present a complete list of all epitaphs in all old public grave-yards commenced before 1800, with plans and with some account of the old grave yards of the three towns of West Bridgewater, Bridge water and East Bridgewater, including all monuments in those yards, down to the present time, and also, most of the epitaphs in private and small-pox yards. The labor has been much greater than was anticipated. Several persons have been employed to copy inscriptions, and to locate and number monuments on the plans. Mr. Joshua E. Crane, Jr., has done most of this work in Bridgewater, and Walter M. Swift and Henry Har 'low have done the most of it in West Bridgewater and East Bridge water. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Towns of New Milford and Bridgewater, Connecticut: 1703-1882 Doet. James Hine for the same reasons, and the Rev. J. B. Bonar's Centennial Sermon, and also the manuscript account of Marbledale, by Mr. Ralph Buckingham. The manuscripts of the late Judge D. S. Boardman have been of very great service. Very important aid has been received by being granted, most cheerfully, the privilege of frequent consultation of the libraries of the Rev. J. F. Schroeder and Mrs. Cor nelia E. Wright. To all these friends it is a pleasure to express special obligations; but more particularly is it a pleasure to have become acquainted with them through such a medium - the making of a book to treasure up the memory of the departed. Download or read book Brockton written by Hamilton Lowe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brockton: A City of Enterprise T was in the seventys that Brock I ton acquired that habit of success which has ever since made it one of the most American of all our eastern cities. Back of that one can find history enough, but it is not the history of Brockton. The story of North Bridgewater (which was post-brockton Brockton) belongs to the history of Bridgewater - North, South, East and West, and does not differ in essential characteristics from the other sections of the town from which it was essentially severed. But about all that North Bridge water really contributed to Brockton was a citizenship of a few thousand people that were so much raw material on which or in which the new leaven worked so complete a transformation that almostany spot on the map upon which you could place your finger has more resemblance to old Bridgewater than has the hustling little city whose growth and prosperity seem to be a bit of the west plucked up by the roots and planted in New Eng land. It would be unjust to Bridgewater not to admit that the raw material was very good. Bridgewater is a fine old town.
