Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Cora Du Bois began her life in the early twentieth century as a lonely and awkward girl, her intellect and curiosity propelled her into a remarkable life as an anthropologist and diplomat in the vanguard of social and academic change. Du Bois studied with Franz Boas, a founder of American anthropology, and with some of his most eminent students: Ruth Benedict, Alfred Kroeber, and Robert Lowie. During World War II, she served as a high-ranking officer for the Office of Strategic Services as the only woman to head one of the OSS branches of intelligence, Research and Analysis in Southeast Asia. After the war she joined the State Department as chief of the Southeast Asia Branch of the Division of Research for the Far East. She was also the first female full professor, with tenure, appointed at Harvard University and became president of the American Anthropological Association. Du Bois worked to keep her public and private lives separate, especially while facing the FBI's harassment as an opponent of U.S. engagements in Vietnam and as a "liberal" lesbian during the McCarthy era. Susan C. Seymour's biography weaves together Du Bois's personal and professional lives to illustrate this exceptional "first woman" and the complexities of the twentieth century that she both experienced and influenced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerri Garretson lived a total of 33 years in Manhattan, Kansas, in three periods. This book features 55 topics about life in the years she was growing up there, plus 13 mini-biographies of teachers and neighbors that were important in her life. It is illustrated with over 800 photos of people, places, and events, and even everyday objects most of us no longer use. To assist readers unfamiliar with Manhattan, she has included maps, and to anchor local events to the nation and the world, there is a timeline. The book is thoroughly indexed. Though many dates and events are mentioned, it is not a history of the city, but rather an entertaining account about the way of life in that time and place. Please be aware that this is a 298 page, heavily illustrated book in the same fixed format as the printed book. As such, it is a download of about large download of approximately 227 MB and will take much longer to download than a novel in flowing format that has no illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evil lurks in the shadows of small-town Nebraska, awaiting its moment to be unleashed, in the New York Times–bestselling author’s horror series debut. Black Wilder has waited a long time to come Whitfield, Nebraska. But he is no stranger to patience. A year, ten years, a hundred years. Time has no meaning for him. He just waits until the moment is right. Then emerges—silently and unmercifully. As night falls heavily on the small prairie town, red-rimmed eyes look out from tightly shut windows. An occasional snarl rips from once-human throats. Shadows play on dimly-lit streets, deepening the gloom of the alleys, bringing with the darkness an almost tangible aura of fear. For the time is now right. The Beasts are hungry. The Undead are awake. The putrid stench of evil hangs in the air. Now the inhabitants of Whitfield are about to be touched by . . . The Devil’s Kiss.
