Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Rich in titles on English life and social history, this collection spans the world as it was known to eighteenth-century historians and explorers. Titles include a wealth of travel accounts and diaries, histories of nations from throughout the world, and maps and charts of a world that was still being discovered. Students of the War of American Independence will find fascinating accounts from the British side of conflict. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. This data is provided as an additional tool in helping to insure edition identification: ++++ Huntington Library N017500 Vol.1 is dated 1797; vol.2 imprint replaces "Johnson, and Dilly" with "Dilly, and Murray" and is dated 1793; vol.3 imprint replaces publishers with "Messrs. Book Synopsis Notes and Queries, Vol. 2 by : P. F. S. Amery
Download or read book Notes and Queries, Vol. 2 written by P. F. S. Amery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Queries, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Local History Biography and Antiquities of the County of Devon; From January 1902 to October 1903 On the completion of the second volume of Down Notes Queries, we have to express our thanks to the many contributors who have assisted us during the two years over which its publication has extended. The contents are varied, and much information, in connection with many matters relating to our county, has been collected and preserved in our pages. The supplementary parts, containing Mr. Crossing's Crosses of the Moor, which has been completed, and the Morebath Churchwardens' Accounts, edited by the Rev. J. Erskine Binney, which are still in course of printing, have been much appreciated, appealing of course to different interests. The success of the Magazine justifies our belief that such a publication was a want, and we have done our best, with the assistance of our publisher, to produce a satisfactory medium of communication between the many lovers of the history, literature and antiquities of Devon. We again ask for contributions, that the new volume commencing in January next may be worthy of its predecessors. Notes of historical events and documents, on places, things and persons will be welcome, and photo graphs of objects of archeological value will be gladly received. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, Devon was seen as unimportant because of its distance from London and its bad roads – lesser, it was thought, than the historical capital or culturally rich home counties. How wrong could non-Devonians have been? The county is all about its splendid prehistoric and historic remains, its myths, and its maritime legacy. That's not to forget the tenacious people who have lived there for thousands of years: wreckers, misbehaving clergymen, eccentrics and determined women who bucked the trends. From stories of early man right up to modern times and every period in-between, Devon (and this book) has it all.
