Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Antiquity, Vol. 2 About the middle course of the Tigris, where the mountain wall of the Armenian plateau steeply descends to the south, there is a broad stretch of hilly country. To the west it is traversed by a few water-courses only, which spring out of the mountains of Sindyar, and unite with the Tigris; from the east the affluents are far more abundant. On the southern shore of the lake of Urumiah the edge of the plateau of Iran abuts on the Armenian table-land, and then, stretching to the south-east, it bounds the river valley of the Tigris toward the east. From its vast, successive ranges, the Zagrus of the Greeks, flow the Lycus and Caprus (the Greater and the Lesser Zab), the Adhim and the Diala. The water, which these rivers convey to the land between the Zagrus and the Tigris, together with the elevation of the soil, softens the heat and allows olive trees and vines to flourish in the cool air on the hills, sesame and corn in the valleys between groups of palms and fruit-trees. The backs of the heights which rise to the east are covered by forests of oaks and nut trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The History of Antiquity, Volume IV (of 6): Look inside the book: The branches which occupied the table-land of Iran and the valley of the Indus were the first to rise from the basis acquired in common to a higher civilisation; and even they did not attain to this till long after the time when Egypt, under the ancient kingdom ofPg 4 Memphis, found herself in the possession of a many-sided culture, after Babylon had become the centre of a different conception of life and development. ...This juxtaposition of two populations, of which one is in possession of the best districts in the country, Pg 10 while of the other only fragments are in existence (combined masses are not found except in the most inaccessible regions), -the indications supplied by these invocations, according to which the light-coloured population on the Indus was in conflict with the 'Black-skins, '-the fact that the light-coloured population, both on the Ganges and the coasts of the Deccan, has always taken up an exclusive and contemptuous position towards the darker tribes existing there, justify the conclusion that the whole region from the Indus to the mouths of the Ganges, from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin, once belonged to the dark population, and that the Aryas are immigrants.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Ancient History and Antiquities, Vol. 7 [The following are brief general notes with wtiich Mr. De Quincey introduced "The Caesars," and Plato's "Republic" when revising the latest edition of his works.] "The Caesars," it may be right to mention, was written in a situation which denied me the use of books; so that with the exception of a few penciled extracts in a pocket-book from the Augustan history, I was obliged to depend upon ray memory for materials, in so far as respected facts. These materials for the Western Empire are not more scanty than meagre; and in that proportion so much the greater is the temptation which they offer to free and skeptical speculation. To this temptation I have yielded intermittingly; but from a fear (perhaps a cowardly fear) of being classed as a dealer in licentious paradox, I checked myself exactly where the largest license might have been properly allowed to a bold spirit of incredulity. In particular, I cannot bring myself to believe, nor ought therefore to have assumed the tone of a believer, in the inhuman atrocities charged upon the earlier Caesars. Guided by my own instincts of truth and probability, I should, for instance, have summarily exploded the most revolting among the crimes imputed to Nero. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Struggles in Antiquity From the purely chronological standpoint, world history is commonly divided into antiquity, the middle ages, the modern times and most modern times.1 When looked at closely, this historical division proves to be inadequate, as it tells us practically nothing. When we speak of antiquity, we think of the empires of Mesopotamia and Egypt, and of the old Hebrews, Greeks and Romans. But had the Kelts, Teutons and Slavs no antiquity? And had the ancient peoples no middle ages, and no modern times? World history is not the record of a homo. Book excerpt: The mind-body relation was at the forefront of philosophy and theology in late antiquity, a time of great intellectual innovation. This volume, the first integrated history of this important topic, explores ideas about mind and body during this period, considering both pagan and Christian thought about issues such as resurrection, incarnation and asceticism. A series of chapters presents cutting-edge research from multiple perspectives, including history, philosophy, classics and theology. Several chapters survey wider themes which provide context for detailed studies of the work of individual philosophers including Numenius, Pseudo-Dionysius, Damascius and Augustine. Wide-ranging and accessible, with translations given for all texts in the original language, this book will be essential for students and scholars of late antique thought, the history of religion and theology, and the philosophy of mind.
