The author, S.J. Chapman, was an established historian of Lancashire cotton and produced this volume as an elementary introduction to the economics of the industry and some of its issues. He discusses the raw material, industrial and commercial history, British trade and foreign tariffs, exploring the historical influence of tariffs on the cotton trade and including two articles reprinted from the Manchester Guardian. The newspaper was strongly affiliated with the Liberal Party who would win a landslide victory the following year based in part on their opposition to Tariff Reform.

Book Synopsis The Story of Cotton and the Development of the Cotton States by : Eugene Clyde Brooks
Download or read book The Story of Cotton and the Development of the Cotton States written by Eugene Clyde Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Cotton and the Development of the Cotton States The cotton industry is probably the greatest single industry in the world if the cultivation, manufacture, commerce, and the uses of the cotton products are considered. The influence of the cotton plant on the history of America is especially interesting. The commerce of the Middle Ages, Columbus's discovery of America, the trade between England and her American colonies, the revolution of the colonies, the War of 1812, the building of the nation, the institution of slavery, the tariff question, the extension of the nation beyond the Mississippi, the Civil War, and the rebuilding of the South were all deeply affected by the cotton industry; and the world's commerce for more than a century has been affected largely by it. For nearly a century the industrial life of the South has been either directly or indirectly related to the cotton industry, and this industry controlled for many years the politics of this country and influenced in no small measure the politics of Europe. Therefore this great economic force has more than ordinary interest for all students of America and especially for students of the South, whose history is affected so vitally by it. Pupils in our public schools have been taught almost exclusively the political history of our country. They have had told to them over and over again the story of political upheavals and military operations, although these crises are probably the results of certain economic forces working in the life of the people. It should be one of the chief aims of the schools, therefore, to acquaint the student with the leading economic forces of his neighborhood, his state, and his country, in order that he may better understand the politics of the country. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE BANCROFT PRIZE • A Pulitzer Prize finalist that's as unsettling as it is enlightening: a book that brilliantly weaves together the story of cotton with how the present global world came to exist. “Masterly … An astonishing achievement.” —The New York Times The empire of cotton was, from the beginning, a fulcrum of constant global struggle between slaves and planters, merchants and statesmen, workers and factory owners. Sven Beckert makes clear how these forces ushered in the world of modern capitalism, including the vast wealth and disturbing inequalities that are with us today. In a remarkably brief period, European entrepreneurs and powerful politicians recast the world’s most significant manufacturing industry, combining imperial expansion and slave labor with new machines and wage workers to make and remake global capitalism.
Book Synopsis A History of the Cotton Industry by : Anthony Burton
Download or read book A History of the Cotton Industry written by Anthony Burton and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about technology and how it has changed the lives of people on three continents over the last three hundred years. The development of the cotton industry was the starting point for one of the great turning points in history the industrial revolution. It began with the importation of cloth into Britain from India and that created a new fashion. As the demand for cotton cloth grew, British inventors began to find ways of making the same cloth using powered machinery and built the first cotton mills. The old way of life of the textile workers was transformed, as work moved from home to factory and thousands of small children were brought in to tend the new machines. If conditions in the cotton towns were bad, they were far worse in America where, thanks to the work of slaves, the country took over the supply of raw material from India. During the American Civil War, Britain turned again to India for its supplies. Today, positions have changed dramatically. India again has a thriving industry, while in Britain only a fraction of the old mills are still at work. The author looks in detail at the technology that produced the changes, but the emphasis is very much on the human stories of the industrialists and their workers, the planters and their slaves in Britain, India and America.
