Book Synopsis The Servile State by : Hilaire Belloc
Download or read book The Servile State written by Hilaire Belloc and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book lays out, in very broad outline, Belloc's version of European economic history, starting with ancient pagan states, in which slavery was critical to the economy, through the medieval Christendom process which transformed an economy based on serf labour in a state in which the property was well distributed, to 19th and 20th century capitalism. Belloc argues that the development of capitalism was not a natural consequence of the Industrial Revolution, but a consequence of the earlier dissolution of the monasteries in England, which then shaped the course of English industrialisation. English capitalism then spread across the world.
Download or read book Charles I written by Hilaire Belloc and published by I H S Press. This book was released on 2003-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A striking portrait of Charles I, this book also looks closely at the role that the burgeoning financial powers played in shaping European politics and the effects that these powers had on the English monarchy during his reign. Belloc also explores the consequences of these effects for Europe generally. At the same time, it is a detailed study of the man who was Charles I with all his strengths, all his weaknesses. Belloc’s sense of history sheds light on how those strengths and weaknesses contributed to action or inaction by Charles and how those actions affected England and the rest of Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilaire Belloc's landmark study Characters of the Reformation argues that Western Europe's break from the Catholic Church was driven by a land-grab and looting of Church property by European noblemen. Belloc has little admiration for the so-called leaders of the time and credits the Reformation to behind-the-scenes players. Each chapter is a mini-biography and individuals covered include Anne Boleyn, Pope Clement the Seventh, Cecil, Richelieu, Laud, Oliver Cromwell, Descartes, Pascal and more.

Book Synopsis Miniatures of French History by : Hilaire Belloc
Download or read book Miniatures of French History written by Hilaire Belloc and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These thirty-one pieces have the grace and delicacy proper to miniatures, as Mr. Belloc aptly calls them. Each runs to no more than a dozen pages, yet the author contrives within these narrow limits to paint a set of memorable pictures of scenes taken from the whole range of French history, from the founding of Marseilles to the Battle of the Marne....Such imaginative reconstruction of history is of greater value than much laboured accuracy of detail and requires the gifts, which it is unnecessary to say Mr. Belloc has in ample measure, of the historian and the poet." "The greater number of Mr. Belloc's subjects are mediaeval and--need we say?--military. The miniature entitled "Roncesvalles" will perhaps be best remembered--for its restraint, its delicacy, its actuality. The scenes are cleanly drawn with the sure touch of one who knows equally the history, the legend and the ground." "These miniatures will long be read with delight, and we are grateful to Mr. Belloc for his delicate work." --The Spectator, November 21st, 1925.
