Book Synopsis French Armies of the Thirty Years' War by : Stéphane Thion
Download or read book French Armies of the Thirty Years' War written by Stéphane Thion and published by LRT Editions. This book was released on 2013-01-19 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive book on the French army of Louis XIII and Richelieu with ful accounts of battles of this period and order of battles. This book begins in 1617, the year that Louis XIII really took power by distancing the queen mother and ordering the assassination of Concini (24 April 1617), and ends in 1648 - five years after the death of Louis XIII - the year of the Westphalia Peace Treaty (24 October 1648). This period was mostly dominated by the personality and works of Richelieu, who entered the king's Council in April 1624. He gave the king an ambition: "to procure the ruin of the Huguenot party, humble the pride of the great, reduce all subjects to their duty, and elevate your majesty's name among foreign nations to its rightful reputation". By the time of his death, on the 4th of December 1642, this programme had been accomplished. The political beliefs of Richelieu gave Louis XIII a powerful instrument that was to emerge transformed from the Thirty Years' War. Commanded by great captains such as the Duc de Rohan, the Viscomte de Turenne and the Prince of Condé, the army was highly successful, as shown by the long list of French victories: Avins and the Valtelline in 1635, Tornavento in 1636, Leucates in 1637, La Rota in 1639, Casale and Turin in 1640, Wolfenbüttel in 1641, Kempen and Llerida in 1642, Rocroi in 1643, Friburg in 1644, Allerheim (or Nördlingen) and Lhorens in 1645, Zusmarchausen in 1647, and Lens in 1648.

Book Synopsis History of France by : Billy Wellman
Download or read book History of France written by Billy Wellman and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France is a land absolutely steeped in history. It has always been a leading nation of Western Europe, and in many ways, one could say France is Western Europe. One could confidently say such a thing because of the long history of French polities taking charge in world history. Before France proper even existed, the tribes there, such as the Franks, played a central role in regional affairs. For example, as the Roman Empire was falling apart, the Franks were increasingly relied upon for the security of the ailing Roman state. And when Rome toppled, the Franks took it upon themselves to pick up the pieces. It was from their efforts that the so-called "Holy Roman Empire" was forged. This massive conglomerate once contained much of France and a large chunk of the rest of western and central Europe. France then became a nation in its own right and would become one of the most powerful powers of Europe, with colonies all over the world. France would then undergo much internal upheaval and a revolution that would rock the whole world. It would take France generations to recover, but recover it did. Before arriving where it is today, the country would go through two world wars and a cold one. In this book, you will discover the following: France's origins and its prehistory France's relations with the Roman Empire How the French survived the Middle Ages The French Revolution and the impact it had on society The Napoleonic Wars and the changes Napoleon made in France and its colonies French colonialism and a look at some of the major French colonies France during the world wars Postwar and Cold War France Modern France and what its future might hold And much more!
Book Synopsis Figures of History by : Jacques Rancière
Download or read book Figures of History written by Jacques Rancière and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important new book the leading philosopher Jacques Rancière continues his reflections on the representative power of works of art. How does art render events that have spanned an era? What roles does it assign to those who enacted them or those who were the victims of such events? Rancière considers these questions in relation to the works of Claude Lanzmann, Goya, Manet, Kandinsky and Barnett Newman, among others, and demonstrates that these issues are not only confined to the spectator but have greater ramifications for the history of art itself. For Rancière, every image, in what it shows and what it hides, says something about what it is permissible to show and what must be hidden in any given place and time. Indeed the image, in its act of showing and hiding, can reopen debates that the official historical record had supposedly determined once and for all. He argues that representing the past can imprison history, but it can also liberate its true meaning.
