Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Curriculum in Colleges As regards the sequence of historical subjects in college, I believe that as a general principle the order of chronological development should be followed where possible, and that a gen eral view of the field of history should ordinarily precede courses on special periods or movements. Such a view of history cannot, however, be advantageously given in a single course, but requires two or three years of consecutive study. If our students brought' to college any such acquaintance with the field of history as is possessed by the graduates of German gymnasia or French lyce'es, they might profitably begin at once with more intensive courses, but such, unfortunately, is far from being the case. In spite of the rapid advances in historical instruction in schools, it still remains true that the average freshman carries with him but a small viaticum of historical knowledge or training, and that his acquaintance with the world's history must for the most part still be gained in college. A general view of the development of civilized life is what he has the right, first of all, to demand, only this must not be so rapid as to render impossible any real under standing of the times studied. Is there anything in the subject-matter, or method, or general discipline, introduced by the new education, which excludes the historic college from a share in it, or remands it to an inferior place? The answer to this ques tion changes somewhat our point of view. Thus far we have been concerned more with the contrast between the college and the university. We shall now be concerned more with the contrast between the college and the school of technology. Yet for the moment we remain in the former field. By long tradition there are certain subjects requiring continued and specialized treat ment which have been put quite without and beyond the college curriculum. These subjects have been chiefly con nected with the great professions. It is now to be noted that there is a tendency to throw back a considerable amount of elementary work from the professional schools into the colleges. Allowance is made both in time and in the larger choice of studies, in the schools of medicine and of theology, and in some cases of law, for those who have taken elementary courses in the colleges. A college student may, if the college so provides, elect his way, up to a certain point, into a professional school. But for the most part the subject-matter of the professional schools must be altogether different from that of the college. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of High-School Curricula in the North Central States From 1860 to 1918 The purpose of this study is to trace the development of high-school curricula in the North Central states from 1860 to 1900. An introductory chapter presents a brief account of the early high schools. It furnishes a background for a treatment of the development of curricula in the geographical area indicated in the title. The monograph is divided into three Parts. Parts I and II are devoted to the period 1860-1900. Part III covers the period 1900- 1918. Part I contains a treatment of subjects and their organization into curricula. Part II is devoted to the subject matter of the various fields and subjects. Part III deals with subjects and subject matter, a chapter being devoted to each. A few authorities are cited but tabulations and discussions are for the most part based upon data secured from original sources. These sources are chiefly published courses of study and textbooks. Some of the material was made available for use by the libraries of the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, Oberlin College, and Cornell College. A considerable portion of it, however, was widely scattered, particularly the published courses of study, and had to be collected from the schools throughout the area. In selecting curricula for purposes of display and tabulation, an effort was made to secure those which would fairly represent prevailing practices. Small schools have somewhat less proportional representation than medium size and large ones for the reason that copies of curricula used in the small school have in many cases not been preserved. d104books for reference have been selected on the basis of their general use as shown by lists displayed in published courses of study. For purposes of tabulation, the period 1860-1900 has been divided into eight units of five years each. In Part III two units were selected, 1906-1910 and 1911-1918. This has been done to determine as accurately as possible the dates at which significant changes took place. In the treatment of subjects, organization of curricula and subject matter, the facts are presented as revealed by the sources consulted. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of history from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and forward into the future with less emotion and more coldblooded judgment. It has been subjected to the test of teachers and supervisors in elementary schools of the country and the city, and of Normal Training Schools. It is the result of years of experience in public schools con ducted under ordinary conditions. It is easily adaptable to either graded or ungraded schools. While it provides for a complete course of study in history from the first to the eighth grades inclusive, it is so arranged that it may be used in connection with any rational plan of correlation of history with other subjects, especially with industrial training, literature and geog raphy. This is particularly true of the outlines for the first four grades. In ungraded schools and those only partially graded, doubtless the demands of the daily pro gram render the adoption of some scheme of combining and coordinating allied subjects an actual necessity. This course provides the desired core or basis for the corre lation of history, geography and literature and, in the primary grades, manual training, in a perfectly natural and interesting manner.
