Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Highlands and Islands of Scotland IN Bonnie Scotland was promised a further volume that should be devoted to the sterner and wilder aspects of Caledonia. That book dealt with the main body of Highlands and Lowlands, more familiar to the gentle tourist for whose patronage it was a candidate. This one, whose title might have been qualified as West Highlands, deals with the less visited side that is still Highland indeed, both in ruder natural features and in a life holding out longer against the trimming and taming Of Sassenach intromissions. The author, as before, has tried to weave a pattern Of entertaining stripes and checks upon a groundwork Of information. All making a darker - hued tartan than is worn in the centre of Bonnie Scotland. Another metaphor would put it that he has prepared a brisk, perhaps frothy, but, it is hoped, not unpalatable, brew Of heather - ale, which contains in solution more solid ingredients than may be manifest to every reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Place, Names, Highlands Islands of Scotland Dr Alexander Macbain's work on Names of Places deals with the Celtic names of pre-Gaelic origin which he calls "Pictish"; with Gaelic names, and with names of Norse origin which have been transmitted through Gaelic. The area from which he took his materials was chiefly Inverness-shire, Sutherland, and Lewis. His views on the language spoken by the Picts are given in his paper on "Ptolemy's Geography of Scotland" (published separately), in his edition of Skene's "Highlanders of Scotland," and in several papers contained in this volume, particularly that on the "Place-Names of Invernessshire." His position is that the Picts spoke Early British or a dialect of it, and that the Celtic language of early Britain was practically homogeneous from the English Channel to the very North. He agrees with Kuno Meyer in holding that "no Gael ever set his foot on British soil save from a vessel that had put out from Ireland." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland IN again offering Rambles to the public, I would wish to make an apology for errors and shortcomings which crept unawares into last year's issues, and all the more so as, although some new matter is added, I am unable, owing to circumstances which need not here be more particularly stated, to delete entirely all that is objectionable. I particularly regret that the references on pages 84-85 to an eminent Statesman should have appeared, for, however much people may differ in regard to politics, there can be no doubt that Scotland has reason to be proud that one so illustrious should be doubly connected with her, by family ties, and by the Parliamentary representation of her premier county. That a stranger, passing through the county town of Ross-shire, should be imposed upon in such a manner, concerning one whose connection with the place casts such lustre upon it, goes to prove that partisanship is carried to most unjustifiable extremes. It is, however, none the less to be deplored, and, although I am not responsible for writing the passage in which it appears, I feel that it is much to be regretted that the matter was not excluded altogether. The anecdote on page 85 is merely a joke which the most ardent admirer of the Prime Minister can afford to smile at. I have to thank those members of the press, of all shades of politics, who noticed Rambles, for the kindness with which they spoke of it and all the newspapers, whether in the United Kingdom or the United States, which criticised the little compilation, did it generously. With one North Country exception. Readers will not be surprised to find that, despite the title of the book, there should be a chapter devoted to a part of the country so beloved by every one as Melrose and its very famous, highly-favoured district. Arran, Islay, the Lews, and the Outer Hebrides generally also come in for a too short notice, in the meantime. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Scottish Highlands and Isles A short history should have a brief Preface, and a few words will suffice to explain the purpose and scope of the present work. No complete history of the Highlands, issued at a popular price and in a compact form, has yet been published. It is believed that a book of that description will serve a purpose which the existing histories do not claim to fulfil, and will appeal to a considerable body of readers whom the larger and more expensive works on the subject fail to reach. In that belief, and with that object, the present volume has been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Superstitions of the Highlands Islands of Scotland: Collected Entirely From Oral Sources This volume is the result of many years' labour by the late Rev. John Gregorson Campbell, while minister of Tiree during the years 1861 - to 1891. Much of the material was already collected before Mr. J. F. Campbell of Islay published his Popular Tales of the West Highlands in 1860, and readers of Lord Archibald Campbell's volumes on Waifs and Strays of Celtic Tradition are already acquainted with the valuable work contributed to that series by the Rev. J. Gregorson Campbell. It is hoped that this volume on the Superstitions of the Scottish Highlands, full as it is of racy stories, may throw fresh light on an extremely interesting subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sports and Adventures in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland: A Sequel to the Wild Sports of the West That night was memorable, Jack. Then you received an honourable patronymic; and a more ill-conditioned neophyte never kicked in the arms of a divine. Seldom had the ancient roof-tree covered a merrier group, and, in imagina tion, I see them now. My honoured aunt, in the ripe bloom that marks a matron's beauty, sat in her high-backed chair, listening reverently to the baptismal prayer; albeit the form belonged to another church, and from him by whom the holy rite was celebrated, she dissented conscientiously. But in those days a difference in religious faith did not matter a brass button. Popery was unobtrusive, -protestants were tolerant, -heaven was considered attainable by all -and, contrary to the more enlightened opinions of modern clerks, persons professing another creed were not, as a matter of course, consigned direct to Pandemonium. But to return to thy christening. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We may derive pleasure and instruction from the examination of a mere sketch, provided the outlines, as far as they go, be executed with grace and fidelity. Hence the foregoing remarks upon books of tra vels in general are applicable, in some degree, to such light productions as the following Journals; which do not profess to exhibit a picture con tinuous, and perfect in all its details. Accordingly this little volume must depend for success, or failure, on its own intrinsic qualities. It can neither conciliate applause, nor stifle censure, by bearing on its front an elaborate apology; which, if the book become popular, will not be required and if it fall into neglect, will never be heard. Is What could they not do? The classes of actions, however, ascribed to them are not numerous. They could take the milk from their neighbours' cattle, bring fish to their own coasts, make fishermen success ful, go to sea for fish themselves and, bring home creelfuls, raise storms, sink ships, drown those who offended them; give strings to sailors with.knots on them, the Unloosening of which raised the wind; they could go to wine-cellars.in London or Ireland, and drink wine till morning; y through the air with magic quickness, and cross the seas in the most un likely vessels, sieves, eggshells, or dry cowsherds; produce awasting disease in an enemy, ' waylay and endanger the belated traveller, and by their cursed tricks keep a child in its mother's womb past its proper time; suck cows, and assume various shapes. They, could benefit, or at least ward away, evil from a favourite, but their power of doing, 50 seems to have been much 'feebler than their powers of mischief.
