Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyses twelve different writings from 19th century Italian literature on the topic of translation. With the exception of their original publication and some earlier reissues, these texts have never been republished in the 20th or 21st centuries and have remained in the shadows for about two centuries. Nevertheless, they provide a very important testimony to the lively interest in translation and the debate that characterized this specific period of Italian literary culture. The few international studies that deal with 19th century theoretical reflection on translation in Italy often focus only on some scattered contributions of a few influential writers (e.g. Leopardi and Foscolo). In this regard, this book could spark new investigations on the subject. While it is commonly thought that reflections on translation during the century analysed in this book came almost exclusively from Germany, France, and England, the debate on this topic was alive and well in Italy during that time and produced many interesting original ideas. Some of the topics discussed by the authors presented here, such as language hospitality, foreign translation, authorial translation, importance of translation in the receiving culture, among others, are presented in an original way that anticipates twentieth-century reflection. Above all, they demonstrate Italian intellectuals’ awareness of the observations on translation originating from other time periods and nations. Although studies on the theory of translation in Italy are often hoped for, they are still rare and undeveloped, and have yet to examine the texts published in this book. The academic awareness of the origins of translation studies in other countries, on the other hand, is more advanced. This book aims to be among these studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tocqueville opens the Recollections, his deeply ambivalent memoir of the failed 1848 Revolution in France, with an explicit denial of any literary intent or rhetorical appeal. Forced by illness into an unaccustomed state of leisure, Tocqueville claims to record his experiences solely for his own amusement, holding up a "secret mirror" through which he will be able to contemplate the past truthfully. In this innovative study, L. E. Shiner examines the Recollections as a test case of the relation between form and content in historical writing. Drawing on current literary theory and semiotics, Shiner offers a close reading which at once confirms the inevitably literary character of historical writing and demonstrates how rhetorical analysis of Tocqueville's writings deepens our understanding of his political thought. Using the methods of reader-response and rhetorical criticisms, among others, Shiner first analyzes the component genres and narrative structures of the Recollections, the recurring pictorial and thematic codes, and the various voices Tocqueville employs. He then confronts the issue of the truth of Tocqueville's treatment of 1848, in part by comparing it with other key texts on these same events—Marx's The Class Struggles in France and Flaubert's Sentimental Education. Finally, Shiner pursues questions of authorial style, tracing the use of some of the rhetorical devices discussed in the Recollections through Tocqueville's Democracy in America, The Old Regime and the French Revolution, and "A Fortnight in the Wilderness."

They can’t go to the Carabinieri so must make enquiries of their own. This is how they come across the rumors about Art—bizarre and unbelievable rumors that he miraculously cured the local mafia boss’ daughter of terminal leukemia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ancient wisdom known only to Gnostics had previously become lost to humanity in the mists of time. This secret knowledge is now revealed to you for the first time, in The Key to the Great Secret, and can be seen in paintings by Poussin and Teniers – so there is no mistaking its existence. What is revealed in the paintings is a secret method of prayer that allows one to have a direct experience of God, just as Gnostics have always maintained. Furthermore, access to God allows one to develop to a much higher level of consciousness and wisdom, allowing them to ultimately attain The Holy Grail of spiritual immortality. This Gnostic Heresy was almost wiped out by the Catholic Church, but has survived and exists in secret organisations to this day. These remaining Gnostics are the trustees to our natural inheritance and hopefully will now feel free to come forward to guide us on our true path. The Key to the Great Secret provides readers with the opportunity to unlock the reality of The Holy Grail, so that they may see with spiritual eyes and understand with Gnostic wisdom. “In all honesty and humility, if everything in this book is true, then it has to be one of the most important books ever written – simply because of what it contains. This book contains the greatest secret in the world. Is this a hoax or not? You must decide,” says author T. Findley.

Book excerpt: Lost Knowledge: The Concept of Vanished Technologies and Other Human Histories examines the idea of lost knowledge, reaching back to a period between myth and history. It investigates a peculiar idea found in a number of early texts: that there were civilizations with knowledge of sophisticated technologies, and that this knowledge was obscured or destroyed over time along with the civilization that had created it. This book presents critical studies of a series of early Chinese, South Asian, and other texts that look at the idea of specific “lost” technologies, such as mechanical flight and the transmission of images. There is also an examination of why concepts of a vanished “golden age” were prevalent in so many cultures. Offering an engaging and investigative look at the propagation of history and myth in technology and culture, this book is sure to interest historians and readers from many backgrounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Material Logic ‘We cannot know where we are headed if we do not know where we are from’ At some juncture in most people’s lives, they will question their existence with varying degrees of intensity, such as, ‘Who am I?’, ‘What happens to me when I die?’ and ‘What is my purpose in life’? Or something along similar lines. The problem with finding answers to those questions is that they will discover most answers are restricted to preexisting beliefs and constructs using materially developed language to define what is non-material. That does not necessarily make those beliefs and constructs wrong, but their material construction can limit them. Consequently, the book Non-Material Logic develops a language compatible with both divergent language forms by delineating how humans have a non-material component that gives ‘life’ to their material life. Consequently, the book is designed to demonstrate the existence of a non-material Personal Source-of-Creation, logically and experientially, as ‘I Am That, I Am’ self-aware First-Manifest. The ‘I Am’ describes the First-Manifest’s non-material Personal existence. And the ‘I Am That’ expresses the Living-Essence of that Life as a Nature. The book then proceeds to logically confirm the following. 1- Can the Living-Essence of the First-Manifest’s Nature be personally experienced using non-material logic? Absolutely. 2- Can non-material logic depict how the non-material energy of the First-Manifest transforms into material energy to create the universe? Absolutely. 3- Can non-material logic establish a logically formed but experienceable pathway to demonstrate how an individual can transition beyond an earthly existence? Absolutely. 4- Can the delineated processes, developed using non-material logic, be applied to daily life? Absolutely. Because it defines a personal purpose for your existence, it reveals a directional certainty used to develop ethical practices founded on a self-created moral foundation that, in some manner, will benefit everyone. Accordingly, it takes a considerable amount of exploratory information to reach a logically formed experientially verifiable conclusion to confirm that humans can never be independent or isolated because humans, knowingly or not, are perpetually non-materially connected to the Source-of-Creation. And to discover that Source, the book begins at absolute zero, where all that existed was infinity and nothing else. From that position, without using beliefs or constructs, the book logically defines how a Source-of-Creation emerged from infinity, what that Source is, and how it functions. Then, it proceeds to explain the non-material Structure of that Source is non-materially reflectively used to create the non-material, and so invisible, structure of our material biology. The book is a new vision of personal existence without relying on constructs or beliefs to define it. Everything within it is logically formed and contains experiential processes to confirm the logic, revealing the meaning and purpose of personal existence. It will support the development of an individual’s self-worth, forming the foundation for a stabilized self-image with a heart-centered view of humanity. In this manner, you create meaning and value for yourself and your society. When mutual value exists, you have unveiled a new life within the old. And the directional intent of the book is to provide supportive processes for discovering that new life. * *
