In many respects, it recalls the story of her sister, Elizabeth of Hungary, though her fate was not so tragic. She was saved from the fury of the assassin; but she revealed many of her sister's attributes—the same courage, the same beauty, the same gayety of disposition, clouded in much the same manner, the same love of nature and of animals, the same love of the people, and the same domestic misfortunes.

Book excerpt: Consort to Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, Elizabeth of Bavaria was a modern woman who fled the confines of Habsburg to roam free--she fancied dangerous riding, sailing, and poetry--but her life ended with her assassination in 1896. "Makes us feel the impact of her beauty as well as the fatal egotism which led to unhappiness, restlessness, and futility."--"Elizabeth Harvey." "Well documented and illustrated...a grand and fascinating tale."--"Brian Aldiss"

This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a translation of a text from 1861, unreleased outside Spain, written by an alleged eyewitness to the events of the Risorgimento, as they happen. After an introduction on the framework of the European and Italian political situation that led to the "Expedition of the Mille", the book tells in detail the story of Francis II of Bourbon, ascended the throne of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to just 23 years for premature death of his father Ferdinand II, immediately forced to defend his kingdom from attack by partisans first and then Piedmont, immobility in front of all the European powers, and with France and England interested and conniving with the invaders. The result is a historical portrait contrarily compared to the dominant opinion of Piedmontese winners, issued since then and still popular today, on the much reviled "Franceschiello", did all of moving impulses of love for his people, heroism and unsuspected wisdom which surely today helps to rehabilitate the character; while they are highlighted the perfidious plots hatched by the enemies of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the betrayals of many politicians and military Bourbon and the acts of barbarism committed by fierce partisans and Piedmontese to achieve their purpose. The peculiarity of this work, in addition to the chronological description of situations and events during their course, of which has a great importance the siege of Gaeta, are the faithful references to documents issued then by Francis II and the government of the Two Sicilies sent to the European powers, in which the author for his alleged privileged position certainly had the access, and its “instantly” considerations to comment the events. Anyway, recognizing the indisputable value of the Unification of Italy, this text adds further details of the historical background of the Italian Risorgimento supplying a different reading and suggesting a properly historical review after more than 150 years after the events occurred. Published in Madrid and Barcelona on 1861 and written by Romualdo M. de Velazquez. Translation by Salvatore Pastorello.
Book Synopsis The Celebrity Monarch by : Olivia Gruber Florek
Download or read book The Celebrity Monarch written by Olivia Gruber Florek and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-18 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empress Elisabeth of Austria (1837-1898), wife of Habsburg Emperor Francis Joseph I, was celebrated as the most beautiful woman in Europe. Glamorous painted portraits by Franz Xaver Winterhalter and widely collected photographs spread news of her beauty, and the twentieth-century German-language film trilogy Sissi (1955-57) cemented this legacy. Despite the enduring fascination with the empress, art historians have never considered Elisabeth’s role in producing her public portraiture or the influence of her creation. The Celebrity Monarch reveals how portraits of Elisabeth transformed monarchs from divinely appointed sovereigns to public personalities whose daily lives were consumed by spectators. With resources ranging from the paintings of Gustav Klimt and Elisabeth’s private collection of celebrity photography to twenty-first century collages and films by T. J. Wilcox, this book positions Elisabeth herself as the primary engineer of her public image and argues for the widespread influence of her construction on both modern art and the emerging phenomenon of celebrity.

Book Synopsis The Reluctant Empress by : Brigitte Hamann
Download or read book The Reluctant Empress written by Brigitte Hamann and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real-life tale behind Netflix's Empress Sisi and the Anarchist, whose assassination in 1898 shocked the world. Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known to her family as 'Sisi', belongs to a famous love story of European royalty. In 1853 the Emperor Franz Josef, the most eligible bachelor in Europe, fell in love with her at first sight when she was 15. They were married the next year. On the surface, it was a fairy-tale marriage, all the more poignant, with hindsight, because her tragic death augured the twilight years of the Habsburg Empire. First published in 1988, Brigitte Hamann's definitive biography tells Elisabeth's story from her birth into Bavarian nobility to her assassination at the hands of an Italian anarchist. In her lifetime she was idolised solely for her grace and beauty; but Hamann shows us a stronger character, bitter at her marriage, seeking independence, and struggling against the powerful influence of her mother-in-law, the Archduchess Sophie.
