Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes in Gray To the children and grandchildren of the men who wore the gray this book is dedicated. It is only right that the children of the Southland know the full meaning of their birthright. No one can object that the truth be told them. It is unjust to the Southland and to those who fol lowed the Stars and Bars to death and to glory not to let the true history of the years 1861 to 1865 be known. If our children are left in ignorance as to this history they may grow up feeling that they have the blood of traitors in their veins. Nothing will stir the blood of our sons to become true and noble men more than to know the history of such men as Lee whose trust was ever in the God of battles, of Jackson who never fought before he prayed, of the Southern woman who nursed the sick soldier, who struggled at home while hus bands and fathers fought, who gave their dearest men to the 'cause, ' yet never wavered in their loyalty to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boy Heroes in Fiction I TH each succeeding year there is a fresh crop of boy heroes - and always are they assured of a ready welcome by hosts of living, active boy readers. There are heroes who appear in gayly decorated wrappers of paper, like Joseph's coat of many colors; and others who are more soberly gowned in cloth of conventional hue. Some come flying in on the wings of the wind - dressed in aviator's togs. Others are in the chap or buckskin of the West. One and all they typify the forward, adventurous spirit of the eternal boy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy in Gray: A Story of the War This book has been written for the young people who are interested in the story of the stirring scenes through which their fathers passed. It is needless to say that it is not a true record of personal life; it is no more history than is Robinson Crusoe or the Pilgrim's Progress. The facts stated as historic are to be relied upon. Many of these came under my own eye, when I went over the ground which Roger speaks of in his campaign. The pictures of Georgia life are, I think, correctly drawn, and ought not to fade out entirely. O'connor have mani fested their interest in bringing to the attention of the general public the graphic stories of Ameri can heroism which are contained in this volume. Among these friends was Charles W. Eldridge, formerly of the publishing house of Thayer and Eldridge, Boston, and afterward connected with the Treasury Department at Washington. Out of loyalty to o'connor's memory, Mr. Eldridge un dertook the considerable task of examining all of o'connor's contributions to the Annual Reports of the life-saving Service, and of selecting those best adapted for republication. The preparation of the volume for the press was nearly completed at the time of Mr. Eldridge's death in 1903, and the publishers of Heroes of the Storm desire to express their Obligation to the service which Mr. Eldridge's affectionate admiration for his friend led him to perform. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Hero Stories This volume contains five accounts of voyagers and explorers, ranging from Columbus to Lewis and Clark; stories of five colonies of marked dissimilarity- Virginia, Quebec, Plymouth, New York, and Philadelphia; brief lives of four pioneers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and fifteen short stories of war times. In treating of our wars, it seemed wisest not to attempt any formal explanation of causes and results, but rather to picture a number of separate and interesting achievements, choosing as far as possible actions that have distinct heroes. The chapters are arranged in chronological order, with a thread of continuity running through them. The aim of the book is to introduce in informal and friendly fashion some of the makers of American history, and to provide a simple, broad foundation for future study of history and biography. Acknowledgments are due to the courtesy of the following for permission to use their material for illustrations; to The Title Guarantee and Trust Co. of New York for New Amsterdam in Stuyvesant's Time; to Mr. C.M. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Veteran's Story Dedicated to the Heroes Who Wore the Gray During long Winter evening's the old farmer Veteran, whose retentive memory dwells on the events of the past, has told his children the incidents and stories of his soldier life in the army of Northern Virginia. At last the thought occurred to me: Why not get him to begin at the day when his company, "The Jasper Grays," left their homes in the rugged hills of old Jasper county, Miss., to go out to battle for the Southern cause, and tell the events of the four year's conflict in rotation 'till he came back home a weary, foot-sore soldier, after the surrender of Lee's army at Appomattox? In thought he carries us with him through fertile valleys where war raged wild and fierce, o'er winding mountain passes and in toilsome marches along the Potomac, James and Rappahannock. In imagination, we view with rapture the grandeur of the scenery in the fair Virginia clime. Awe fills our souls while he tells of the soldier life of Southern men when the snow and sleet had mantled valley, plain and mountain. He tells of the sentinel who stood at his post of duty for many lonely hours, keeping vigil while a weary army slumbered. Through the four year's strife, amid cannon boom and rattle of musketry, that stifled the moan of wounded and dying, the Veteran has taken us in story, showing the heroic endurance of the men in Gray and telling the greatness of the two unrivalled warriors - Lee and Jackson. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes Every Child Should Know: Tales for Young People of All the World's Heroes in All Ages They had worked and thought and dreamed only a little time before they began to explain the marvelous earth on which they found themselves and the strange things that happened in it; the vastness and beauty of the fields, woods, sky and sea, the force of the wind, the com ing and going of the day and night, the warmth of sum mer when everything grew, and the cold of winter when everything died, the rush of the storm and the terrible brightness of the lightning. They had no idea of what we call law or force; they could not think of anything being moved or any noise being made unless there was some one like themselves to move things and make sounds; and so they made stories of gods and giants and heroes and nymphs and fawns; and the myths, which are poetic explanations of the world and of the life of men in it, came into being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses.
