Book excerpt: From fantasy novels and cosplay to Renaissance festivals and roleplaying games, the love for medieval weapons runs deep. But how were they actually used? In The Use of Medieval Weaponry, historical fencing instructor and competitive fighter, Eric Lowe brings together the words of over a dozen medieval masters, as well as the practical experience of contemporary historical European martial artists, to answer this deceptively simple question. For the first time, learn to see weapons from the perspective, not of ancient generals or modern museum curators, but the people holding the sword. Compare weapons in combat, consider the pros and cons of different types and styles, and discover how medieval warriors adapted their art to their favorite tools. Whether you are an armchair enthusiast or a fighter ready to step up your game, Lowe takes you inside the world of medieval martial arts as no one else can.

This book was released on 2021-07-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of an intellectual exercise to understand our post-COVID society. Our planet is convalescing from one of the worst pandemics in living memory – the whole of 2020 has been sacrificed to combat the iniquities perpetrated by a sub-microscopic conglomeration of proteins and nucleic acids, a virus that has achieved immortality in the annals of history as SARS-COVID-19. Deaths from COVID-19 in USA have crossed 405,399 – the number of Americans who died in the Second World War. The most important and, most far-reaching effect has of course been that of isolation, ‘lockdown’ in colloquial usage. That term is now probably the most widely understood English word across the inhabited world from the poles to the tropics, even in non-English speaking countries like China and Japan. The primary effect of this lockdown has been on the economy – from developed to developing countries, there are none that may claim to have escaped the paralyzing debilitation caused by an instant and total absence of all forms of commerce. Long queues in front of provision stores, slow starvation as savings dried up, people begging for scraps, people dying by the roadside and railway tracks as they set out to walk the length and breadth of the country en-route to their homes from their places of work – all these shocking pictures are now part of our heritage. An online society has cropped up as the new normal one, sustained by internet, apps, tweeter, and face-book and so on. It is needless to say that this digital society is the child of no other than the Corona virus. What is different today is the loss of vision. Men have distanced themselves not only from their friends but also from their productive energy and sustainable creativity.

Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Terry McMillan comes a “frank, no-holds-barred, humorous look at African-American midlife” (The Seattle Times). “Being a lifetime wife and mother has afforded me the luxury of having multiple and even simultaneous careers: I've been a chauffeur. A chef. An interior decorator. A landscape architect, as well as a gardener. I've been a painter. A furniture restorer. A personal shopper. A veterinarian's assistant and sometimes the veterinarian. I've been an accountant, a banker, and on occasion, a broker. I've been a beautician. A map. A psychic. Santa Claus. The Tooth Fairy. The T.V. Guide. A movie reviewer. An angel. God. A nurse and a nursemaid. A psychiatrist and psychologist. Evangelist. For a long time I have felt like I inadvertently got my master's in How to Take Care of Everybody Except Yourself and then a PhD in How to Pretend Like You Don't Mind. But I do mind.” Today forty-four year old Marilyn Grimes has decided to be something other than a wife, a mother, a sister, or a daughter: herself. But first, she has to figure out exactly who that is....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth and fifth volumes of the Global History of Philosophy are designated The Period of Scholasticism in order to stress that the scholastic method with its emphasis on thesis, antithesis, and attempts at synthesis became universal throughout Eurasia. Scholasticism should not be taken in the pejorative sense as the juggling of arguments by straw men, but in the sense of a challenge even in our own era to work for consistent and comprehensive systematic synthesis. All the older traditions need to be reinteerpreted in terms of modern conditions --which, after all, is what the Eurasian scholastics of these centuries were doing for their own time. The major developments of this period are Monism in Many Moods during the ninth century, through Exfoliation and Elaboration of those seminal systems in the tenth and eleventh centuries unitl the time of the Great Summas in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It was during this time that philosophy and theology developed a very highly sophisticated technique of balancing arguments and refutations and counter-arguments and counter-refutations. As is true of the whole series, these volumes are a new way of exploring the accumulative wisdom of mankind, and in the process explode many of the ethnocentric stereotypes which still hinder intercultural communications and world peace through intercultural understanding.
