Book excerpt: The joyous spirit of Christmas, sharing and caring, are at the heart of the three stories and 60 illustrations in "The Harry and Lola Christmas Collection". Children love to help and want to be loved. Each story inspires these characteristics in the reader. "Harry and Lola Meet Santa Paws" begins the story of this new Christmas legend. Rescued Scotties Harry and Lola meet Santa Paws-once one of Santa's helpers, who takes food and treats to needy dogs all over the world on Christmas Eve. Harry and Lola ride with Santa Paws on a Christmas Eve adventure. During the night they meet many dogs in need of help, but the thrill of the night comes when they assist Santa Paws and his team of sled dogs in rescuing a puppy from a band of marauding hyenas. Though terrified of the hyenas, Lola discovers she has true courage after all, and Santa Paws invites the pair back to ride again next Christmas Eve. At the end of the book kids are invited to become a part of Santa Paws' team of helpers by making any size or type of contribution to any dog rescue organization. Then they can email Harry and Lola at [email protected] to receive an official personalized poster showing they are part of the Santa Paws team. "Harry and Lola Help Santa Paws", returns the pair as Christmas Eve helpers, but this time they bring a friend. Just before they leave to meet Santa Paws they find a neglected young Corgi which they name Prince. Prince needs a home but there is no time to deal with that, so they bring him with them to help Santa Paws. Before going on their Christmas Eve world tour giving treats and food to dogs, the Christmas troupe has to rescue dogs that have been injured in a Christmas Eve tornado. Prince discovers strength and courage he didn't know he had. When Prince works to help dogs in need, he discovers his passion for his life and Santa Paws discovers an apprentice. At the end of the story readers are again invited to become part of Santa Paw's team. "Bernie's First Christmas" is about the newest member of Harry and Lola's rescued Scottie dog family. Having spent the first six months of his life in a small cage, never seeing the sun or a blue sky, Bernie is in love with his new life. That love and passion sometimes gets him in trouble. So ... when Christmas stockings are hung by the fireplace and Lola tells Bernie they mean good dogs will receive presents on Christmas, Bernie wonders if he has been a good dog. He explores all the things he's done wrong since coming to his new home and concludes, "There isn't going to be a Christmas for Bernie." Kids love this story because they can relate to Bernie's concern. They also love the ending! All profits from the sale of "The Harry and Lola Christmas Collection" go to Aberdeen Scottish Terrier Rescue.

She's too old for you to be asking, she bucks stereotypes like a bronco, and she suffers adult sons, daughters-in-law, and potential suitors badly. In Old Age Isn't for Sissies, Lola continues her brash march through life, stepping over proper diet, exercise, and political correctness. She's a take-no-prisoners, cigar-chomping, beer-on-the-doily kind of gal who will whack you with her cane if given half a chance. But Lola's lack of charm is her most charming trait-and what makes her such a delight to fans of all ages.

Book excerpt: Lola Bensky is a nineteen–year–old rock journalist who irons her hair straight and asks a lot of questions. A high–school dropout, she's not sure how she got the job – but she's been sent by her Australian newspaper right to the heart of the London music scene at the most exciting time in music history: 1967. Lola spends her days planning diets and interviewing rock stars. In London, Mick Jagger makes her a cup of tea, Jimi Hendrix (possibly) propositions her and Cher borrows her false eyelashes. At the Monterey International Pop Festival, Lola props up Brian Jones and talks to Janis Joplin about sex. In Los Angeles, she discusses being overweight with Mama Cass and tries to pluck up the courage to ask Cher to return those false eyelashes. Lola has an irrepressible curiosity, but she begins to wonder whether the questions she asks these extraordinary young musicians are really a substitute for questions about her parents' calamitous past that can't be asked or answered. As Lola moves on through marriage, motherhood, psychoanalysis and a close relationship with an unexpected pair of detectives, she discovers the question of what it means to be human is the hardest one for anyone—including herself—to answer.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE JOHN CREASEY DEBUT DAGGER AWARD Nominated for the Edgar Award for best first novel An astonishing debut crime thriller about an unforgettable woman who combines the genius and ferocity of Lisbeth Salander with the ruthless ambition of Walter White The Crenshaw Six are a small but up-and-coming gang in South Central LA who have recently been drawn into an escalating war between rival drug cartels. To outsiders, the Crenshaw Six appear to be led by a man named Garcia . . . but what no one has figured out is that the gang's real leader (and secret weapon) is Garcia's girlfriend, a brilliant young woman named Lola. Lola has mastered playing the role of submissive girlfriend, and in the man's world she inhabits she is consistently underestimated. But in truth she is much, much smarter--and in many ways tougher and more ruthless--than any of the men around her, and as the gang is increasingly sucked into a world of high-stakes betrayal and brutal violence, her skills and leadership become their only hope of survival. Lola marks the debut of a hugely exciting new thriller writer, and of a singular, magnificent character unlike anyone else in fiction.

Book excerpt: Brownie and Lola are young and in love. But the odds - not to mention their mothers, the cops, welfare officers and the stifling conventions of 1950s Brisbane - are against them. When they are forced to face adult responsibilities, will they rise to the challenge, or fall apart? The Delinquents, Criena Rohan's classic novel of rock and roll, youthful rebellion and big dreams, is a love story for the ages. Deirdre Cash, who published under the pseudonym Criena Rohan, was born in 1924 in Melbourne. She grew up in South Australian and Melbourne, and went on to attend the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. She married twice, had two children and worked variously as a singer and ballroom-dancing teacher. Ill-health inspired her to pursue her love of writing in the late 1950s. She published her first novel, The Delinquents in 1962. It was followed by Down by the Dockside in 1963. Cash passed away from cancer that same year at the age of thirty-eight. Book excerpt: The hottest female nightclub star in 1930s Havana guards two secrets: She is a Polish-born American Jew, and she has a penis. Lola Flores, a musically gifted transgender woman, lives in constant fear of discovery while battling inner demons. Days before the 1929 Wall Street crash, 19-year-old pianist Albert Sobel fakes drowning in New York’s East River. As Lola Torres, she rides the Havana Special to Key West only to be assaulted by the train’s conductor. In politically unstable Havana, a Jewish nightclub proprietress tied to the American mob offers Lola a job. A transgender man, Fernando Fallon, designs her trademark floral hat and becomes her lifelong platonic companion. Lola is preyed on by the nightclub owner then a senior government official. The notorious gangster Ben “Bugsy” Siegel, unaware she is trans, takes her under his wing. In Nazi Berlin with bandleader Xavier Cugat, Lola meets the ill-fated transgender Danish woman Lili Elbe. Revolution in Cuba drives Lola back to New York. Depression-era Broadway brings a role in The Ziegfeld Follies of 1936, support by columnist Walter Winchell and spying in Havana for the FBI. World War Two Hollywood produces a glittering but brief film career, a tragic love affair and a hushed reunion with a sister. After Siegel’s 1947 murder in Los Angeles, Lola and Fernando flee to San Francisco. There they meet Christine Jorgensen, the first woman to successfully undergo gender reassignment. In 1953, Lola confronts McCarthyism while defending friend Lucille Ball from charges of Communist activity. On the set of I Love Lucy in 1954, Lola collapses. Dying, she recalls arriving in New York Harbor at age two and her father’s ironic words.
