Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Book of Niagara: A Comprehensive Guide to the Scientific, Historical and Scenic Aspects of Niagara; For the Use of Travelers For more than two hundred years the Niagara region has been the most celebrated part of America. In the earlier period of our history it was the doorway to the upper lake region and the Mississippi Valley, for the possession of which French and English and English and Colonists struggled in turn. From a scientific point of view it has presented problems which have interested almost every geologist of distinction, both in America and Europe. As a scenic wonder the Cataract has probably attracted more visitors than any other single natural object in the world. It is the purpose of this handbook to enable the visitor, whether his tastes be for the scenic, the scientific or the historical, to see Niagara from his own point of view, with the minimum outlay of time and money. The book is based upon the author's personal acquaintance with this region, which for thirteen years has been his field for study and recreation. It is issued solely in the interest of travellers whose needs have been, as far as possible, anticipated and provided for. Advertisements of all kind are strictly excluded from its pages. It is believed that the book will enable the tourist to see Niagara much more fully and intelligently than would otherwise be possible, in which case it will have fulfilled its mission. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Niagara River IN the endeavour to gather into one volume a proper de scription of the various interests that centre in and around the Niagara River the author of this book felt very sincerely the difficulties of the task before him. As the geologic wonder of a continent and the commercial marvel of the present century, the Niagara River is one of the most remarkable streams in the world. In historic interest, too, it takes rank with any American river. To combine, then, 1nto the pages of a single volume a proper treatment of this subject would be a task that perhaps no one could accomplish satisfactorily. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of this natural wonder, from its geological beginnings to the present. "The noble cataract reflects the concerns, failings, and fancies of the times. If we gaze deeply into its shimmering image we can perhaps discern our own." - page 22 “[Pierre Berton] makes a serious and convincing case for Niagara's pivotal role in North American history. ... His Niagara is a lodestar for North American culture and invention: site of the first railway suspension bridge, inspiration for Nikola Tesla's discovery of the principle of alternating current, and the subject of Frederic Church's most celebrated landscape; a natural wonder that has bewitched generations of scientists, authors, and utopians, and stimulated innovations and social movements still casting long shadows. ... surprising, rich and engrossing.” -- Thurston Clarke, New York Times Book Review “Canadian historian Berton tells dozens of absorbing tales about the region and those who passed through it ... He tells them all superbly, aided by essential maps and a few reproductions of posters advertising some of the more bizarre stunts.” -- Publishers Weekly “Entertaining. . . . Berton brings to life the adventurers and dreamers, visionaries and industrialists, who over centuries have been drawn to the Falls.” -- Maclean’s "Berton at his storytelling best; there is something here for everyone. ... a vintage, full-bodied read." -- The London Free Press "A book worth diving into." -- Calgary Herald "By turns ironic, amused, shocked, horrified and awestruck, Berton traces Niagara's history through the deeds of those who came in contact with it ... all the while walking the fine line between detachment and emotion with agility and grace." -- The Whig-Standard (Kingston) Pierre Berton was one of Canada’s most popular and prolific authors, and is widely credited with popularizing Canadian history. His previous books include The Wild Frontier, Prisoners of the North, Klondike, The Invasion of Canada, and The Great Depression.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spoliation of the Falls of Niagara Jacques Cartier had ascended the St. Lawrence in 1535 and again a few years later. Champlain followed in his tracks as far up the river as Montreal (in 1603) five years before the settlement of Quebec. From the summit of the old volcanic mountain at Montreal he saw the first or Lachine rapids of the St. Lawrence, above which he could discern the smooth water of the expanded river, now known as Lake St. Louis. Here he received accounts from three different Indians as to the nature of the country beyond. Their communication must have been largely carried on by signs and diagrams, drawn on the sand. Although the first volume of Champlain's works is extremely rare, the accounts were transcribed by lescarbot in his history of New France, published soon after, in 1609. The description of the rapids and various lake-like expansions of the St. Lawrence, the Thousand Islands, Lake Ontario, the occurrence of Niagara with its rapids, and Lake Erie reaching to Lake Huron beyond which no man had been, were all so complete that a navigator unimpeded by hostile Indians could easily have found his way. But the natives were hostile, so that Lake Huron came to be known long before Lake Erie and the Niagara River. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Niagara Falls Reader, this little pamphlet is written at the request of gentlemen who are interested in the prosperity of Niagara Falls as a public resort; whose business it is to entertain the traveling public, and who desire to convince you that it will be for your advantage and lasting pleasure, not only to come to Niagara Falls, but to remain there for some time. These gentlemen believe that, in these days of noisy advertising, when every cheap and new resort is puffed into temporary notoriety, the merits of Niagara - the greatest wonder and delight in the world - may be overlooked and forgotten. They know that while hundreds of travelers from over the sea journey for weeks to stand by the brink of Niagara, pay to it their tribute of admiration, and extol in glowing terms its majesty, immensity, power, grandeur, and beauty, thousands in our own land, living where a few hours' journey will enable them to reach it, die without ever having beheld this great gift of God to mankind.
