Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harmony of Divine Truth How it can be accounted for, that the term truth should have been selected by the inspired writers, (or rather by the Spirit Of inspiration.) to distinguish the religion which they exhibit, from every other system in the world, if at the same time they had considered it as a mere moral chaos, made for our plastic hands to mould and shape into such creeds as should please every man's own fancy? It is worthy to be noted that the sacred volume makes a very copious* use of this term, applying it to every department Of religion. For itself, as an inspired book, it claims the honor Of being called the scripture of truth, and the word of truth. Dan. X. 21. Eph. I. 13. Is not the Bible thus manifestly distinguished from the Koran of the Mahometan's, and the Shasters Of the Brahmins, and from every other book which sets up a claim to inspiration? The God of the Bible is called the true God, his beloved Son is called the true Witness, and his Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth; and why, except to distinguish Jehovah from idols, his Son from false Christs, and the Holy Ghost from Satan, and every other lying spirit? The doctrines we are required to believe, are denominated the truth, to distinguish them from the doctrines of devils, and from delusive errors of every kind; and the belief of these doctrines, when it is wrought in our hearts by the Spirit Of God, is said to be truth and no lie, to distinguish it from a false faith which does not work by love. Also, that conduct which is required by the divine law, and which is the external expression of a heart conformed to it, is called obeying the truth. 1 Tim. Ii. 4. 1 John ii. 27. 2 John 4. The church of the living God, when considered as a community, composed Of men redeemed from iniquity, is called the pillar and ground Of the truth. 1 Tim. Iii. 15. See also Isa. Xxvi. 2. What an importance does it give to religious truth when we hear Christ Jesus witnessing this good confession before Pontius Pilate! TO this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. John xviii. 37. Surely that must be a thing Of no small consequence, the establishment of which was the end of our Redeemer's birth, and the sole cause why he came into the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seal of Heaven: Or the Impression of Divine Truth on a Candid Mind These proofs have been elaborated, and present ed to the world in countless volumes; and they con stitute a mass of evidence perfectly conclusive. By it skeptics have been confounded and believers have been confirmed, in all ages. It is an impregnable fortress, against which the shafts Of infidelity have been unavailing. NO system, secular or religious, has ever passed through such a fiery'ordeal as Chris tianity. Its enemies have put in requisition all the resources Of genius, literature, science, and ridicule to overcome it; and yet it stands, and the more firmly because Of the attacks which have been made upon it. Men believe a thousand things, and adventure their property, reputation, and lives on the strength of their belief, on less than a tithe of the testimony in confirmation of the gospel to which we have referred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Inheritance: As Revealed in the Bible, Man Nature; And Discerned by the Methods of Christ and of the Sprit This book may be conceived as a further utterance bearing upon the study of the conflict betwixt Agnosticism and the Bible as representing Religion. The results of the study would tend to prove that the conflict ought to cease, for the simple reason that there is no cause for strife, because Nature, Man, and the Bible are in agreement, united and harmonious. They arc as three independent witnesses, and their testimony to Divine Truth is sufficient to restore to men a perfect and unique form of Faith in God as the Revealer of all Truth and Grace. Arising out of these studies, what is termed "the Method of Christ" has taken a prominent place. The name is adapted from the Blessings uttered by Christ at the beginning of His ministry; they are the eightfold diverse forms of the spiritual life in its order of development. It is this particular harmonious unity in Divine gracious truth that awakens special interest, and the use of this Method becomes the Key to the study of the Bible, as a science; the science of the life of Grace in Christ. The Method of Christ has been applied to the Bible as a whole, and to its varied parts, and the same system of development can be traced in all divisions of the Bible, as a Revelation of Divine Truth. This Method has been, in a limited sense, applied to the natural sciences, also to Man in his complex being, and the results are the same, it is the Method of Christ that interprets the harmony that is in the universe of order and law, and the unity is found in Christ. When the discernment of Divine Truth, by science, leads direct to Faith in God, then it can easily be seen that such a Revelation, as here indicated, must mean Hope in Christ, the Son of God, the Saviour of the world. It is Christ that reveals the way of salvation from sin. He is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life," and by Him men return to God and good, As Revealed in the Bible, Man and Nature and Discerned By the Methods of Christ. He is the Teacher revealing Divine Truth in Grace, the way of spiritual life for mankind. It is the Spirit of Truth that takes all objective forms of truth in Nature, Man, and the Bible, and inworks them into the souls of men. There is also a Divine Method of the Spirit's operations that may be conceived as distinct in order from the Method of Christ; and the order of this development is inward and spiritual, as expressed in Faith, Hope, Patience, and Gracious Love. God is Truth. Christ is the Ideal, the embodiment of Divine Truth and Grace. The Spirit of Christ takes the Truth, as it is in Him, and there is Revelation to mankind. This Revelation to men, of Grace and Truth, is by the Word; and the Word is the Work of the Spirit. The reign of Christ is that of Divine Truth, of spiritual order and law; the Work of the Spirit is the regenerated life in Christ; and the issue must be Divine union in gracious Love. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Divine Science: New Light Upon Old Truths; To All Who Seek More Light As the lessons in this book are designed to be studies upon the Science, or right knowledge of Divinity, the subject is taken from its starting point in the Divine, and step by step is it developed from the Source and Cause of all things. Therefore each study makes that which follows it plain, and it is decidedly important that the lessons be read, or studied rather, in their order. To one who has never had opportunity to study this truly Divine Science, we would suggest that they may find, by careful thought, a complete understanding of the principle and practice of the Science of Life, in these lessons. So we advise such, to lay aside questions at first; read each lesson to gain clearly the point considered in it; let all else alone. Read one lesson each day, or even on alternate days; reread often, until the subject of it is understood, before studying the next. By so doing, with out a teacher, the knowledge of the Science may be gained, and its practice understood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Travail in Nature, Man and the Bible: As Traced by Science and the Method of Christ In former works in the pursuit of truth, the chief object kept in View has been that of discovering in what way the light of science tends to make known to men Divine order and law, as conceived to be the Will of God. This has been done in the light Of the method of the teaching of Christ, as fully explained, and the results have been, as related to Nature, Man and the Bible, such as require the careful consideration of thoughtful men. It is assumed here that unity and harmony of thought have been attained in this direction; thus what is required atgthe present time is not the further study of that line of thought. It is, however, one thing to perceive that such agreement exists in the light of science and the method Of Christ, and to apply these conceptions to the more practical problems of life as these are studied by thoughtful men. When men by the inductive, or scientific, method of thought seek to discover truth, what they desire to know is the true relations that exist, what truly is and what ought to be they seek after definable order, and when that discovered order is verified, then this becomes law, what men ought ever to expect under similar conditions. The position which science has reached, as related to order and law in the physical world is unique in history it is not what men expected in fact, they have had revealed to them a new universe that transcends in glory all the experiences and empiric reasonings of men. It is true that science works for practical ends; but it can now be seen that the results of scientific work, in every direction, tend toward a perfect idealism an intellectual cosmic universe in which order and law are found to be regnant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Four Gospels?: Or, the Gospel for All the World; A Manual Designed to Aid Christians in the Study of the Scriptures, and to a Better Understanding of the Gospels It is admitted on all hands that the central point of attack upon Christianity in the present age is found in the Gospels. "The life of Jesus," says Tischendorf, "is the most momentous of all questions which the Church has to encounter, - the one which is decisive whether it shall or shall not live." The assailants demand that the Christian apologist shall put his system to the test of exhibiting its philosophic basis and its rational explanation. Whether the demand be reasonable or unreasonable, it is certain that this scientific age will continue to press its questions of why and how. While it is absolutely certain that God's Word will stand all legitimate tests and remain intact to the end of time, it is no less certain that some of the old modes of viewing, exhibiting, and defending it must be abandoned for others which are more truly scientific, or, in other words, more in harmony with the divine truth and thought. It is a growing conviction in many Christian minds, that the most conclusive argument for the divine origin of the four Gospels is not that furnished by the external evidences but by the Gospels themselves; that whoever can be brought to take a truly scientific view of them, that is, to see them as they really are in themselves and their relations, will need no further arguments to convince him that these productions are each and all from God.
