Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Happenings of a Musical Life A suggestion from Dr. Jordan last spring that he might write some of his reminiscences for the public press led to my suggesting in return that I might print them for him in book form. If I had in mind a leisurely enterprise, stretching comfortably and indefinitely into the future, I was quickly undeceived, for, as I find from an entry in my notebook, he began work on the day my proposal was made, and had practically completed the task within the next fortnight. Such an instance of quick and comprehensive composition seems little short of marvellous. It shows that the writer had his material, consciously or unconsciously, well in hand. It reflects also his extraordinary memory for names, dates and facts. In surprisingly few cases did it prove necessary for him to fortify his recollection from memoranda or by consultation with friends and acquaintances. The book, however, was not altogether composed within two weeks. As Dr. Jordan wrote, his memories branched in many directions, and the result was that a number of additional chapters were eventually produced. The volume stands, nevertheless, as a remarkable example of rapid writing, done with exceptional facility, considering that the author's professional training has been chiefly along other lines. A violin virtuoso, Cook studied at Oberlin College (his parents' alma mater), Berlin's Hochschule für Musik with Joseph Joachim, and New York's national Conservatory of Music with Antonin Dvorak. Cook wrote music for a now-lost production of Uncle Tom's Cabin for the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, and then devoted the majority of his career to black musical comedies due to limited opportunities available to him as a black composer. The guitarist Chuck Brown, the "Godfather of Go-Go," created the music by mixing sounds borrowed from church and the blues with the funk and flavor that he picked up playing for a local Latino band. Born in the inner city, amid the charred ruins of the 1968 race riots, go-go generated a distinct culture and an economy of independent, almost exclusively black-owned businesses that sold tickets to shows and recordings of live go-gos. At the peak of its popularity, in the 1980s, go-go could be heard around the capital every night of the week, on college campuses and in crumbling historic theaters, hole-in-the-wall nightclubs, backyards, and city parks. Go-Go Live is a social history of black Washington told through its go-go music and culture. Encompassing dance moves, nightclubs, and fashion, as well as the voices of artists, fans, business owners, and politicians, Natalie Hopkinson's Washington-based narrative reflects the broader history of race in urban America in the second half of the twentieth century and the early twenty-first. In the 1990s, the middle class that had left the city for the suburbs in the postwar years began to return. Gentrification drove up property values and pushed go-go into D.C.'s suburbs. Music can be a source of self-knowledge and self-expression, and hence reveal important dimensions of the self to others. This knowledge--of both self and of others--has a moral force as well. Shared musical experience can transform and establish new modes of being with others, cultivate virtues, and expand the moral imagination. The term sonification (which means translating data into non-verbal audible tones) provides an organizing principle for the arguments in the book. Transposing the concept into a philosophical key, this book explores two forms of sonification: first, the process by which musical experience reveals dimensions of the self and relationships with others; and second, philosophical sonification, or the critical examination of philosophical concepts, arguments, and theories in view of what musical experience reveals. These two kinds of sonification are discussed specifically in the context of disability. In this book, author Licia Carlson brings the musical lives of people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities into the foreground in order to challenge and broaden existing conceptions of disability and music and provide new ways of thinking about the philosophies of music and disability.
