Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holiness is experiencing a renaissance both within and beyond the church today. Based on years of conversations with students, this approachable theological introduction to the Christian doctrine of holiness challenges the commonly held idea that holiness is primarily a moral category. The author explains that holiness is grounded not in ethics but in the basic nature of God; it is essentially and exclusively a divine property. The book highlights the Bible's necessary and corrective role in defining holiness and shows how individual holiness is grounded in the community that is the church catholic.
Book Synopsis Beholding the Tree of Life: A Rabbinic Approach to the Book of Mormon by : Bradley J. Kramer
Download or read book Beholding the Tree of Life: A Rabbinic Approach to the Book of Mormon written by Bradley J. Kramer and published by Greg Kofford Books. This book was released on with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often readers approach the Book of Mormon simply as a collection of quotations, an inspired anthology to be scanned quickly and routinely recited. In Beholding the Tree of Life Bradley J. Kramer encourages his readers to slow down, to step back, and to contemplate the literary qualities of the Book of Mormon using interpretive techniques developed by Talmudic and post-Talmudic rabbis. Specifically, Kramer shows how to read the Book of Mormon closely, in levels, paying attention to the details of its expression as well as to its overall connection to the Hebrew Scriptures—all in order to better appreciate the beauty of the Book of Mormon and its limitless capacity to convey divine meaning.

Book Synopsis Empowered for Witness by : Robert Menzies
Download or read book Empowered for Witness written by Robert Menzies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-13 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this study, Menzies sets a new standard for pneumatology. Beginning with an overview of the pneumatological perspectives of intertestamental Judaism (including literature from the Diaspora, Palestinian, Qumran and rabbinic sources), the first section concludes that for the most part these sources 'consistently identify experience of the Spirit with prophetic inspiration'. The next section aims to uncover Luke's distinctive pneumatology, employing a redaction critical method of analysis in order to illustrate Luke's similarly consistent portrayal of the Spirit as the source of prophetic inspiration, rather than as the source of Christian existence. The final section goes on to explore how this conclusion impacts on contemporary theological reflection and spiritual life. Robert P. Menzies is Lecturer in New Testament at Asia Pacific Theological Seminary, Baguio City, Philippines.
Book Synopsis Exegesis at Qumran by : George J. Brooke
Download or read book Exegesis at Qumran written by George J. Brooke and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis of the text 4Q Florilegium must begin with the acknowledgement that the text is fragmented in nature and alludes to others through quotations. With this acknowledgement, Brooke moves on to address the relevant contextual aspects of the text. What becomes clear is this: without appreciation of exegetical devices and techniques at use in early Judaism, any analysis of 4QFlor is as fragmentary as the text itself. Brooke's thorough and precise methodology for working through the text via context makes this book the go-to work on 4Q Florilegium.

Book Synopsis Herod the Great and Jesus: Chronological, Historical and Archaeological Evidence by : Gerard Gertoux
Download or read book Herod the Great and Jesus: Chronological, Historical and Archaeological Evidence written by Gerard Gertoux and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional date of 4 BCE for Herod's death, as set forth by E. Schurer (1896), has been accepted by historians for years without notable controversy. However, according to the texts of Luke and Matthew, Herod died shortly after Jesus' birth, which can be fixed in 2 BCE. Consequently, there is apparently a major chronological contradiction, however Josephus gives a dozen synchronisms that enable us to date his death on 26 January 1 BCE just after a total lunar eclipse (9 January 1 BCE) prior to the Passover. Two important events confirm the dating of Herod's death: the 'census of Quirinius' in Syria which was a part of the 'Inventory of the world' ordered by Augustus when he became 'Father of the Country' in 2 BCE and the 'war of Varus' after Herod's death conducted under the auspices of Caius Caesar, the imperial legate of the East, and dated during the year of his consulship in 1 CE."
