Trade, Growth and Development examines this disparity and assesses the reasons why some developing countries have been more successful than others. The book is divided into four parts: Part I examines recent developments in the theory of trade, growth and economic development; Parts II to IV present an empirical analysis of policy and performance in Latin America, Asia and Africa. As well as offering an analysis of traditional economic factors the book also emphasises the role of politics and institutions in the process of economic development.

Book Synopsis The Handloom Industry of Begampur in Transition by : Abhradip Banerjee
Download or read book The Handloom Industry of Begampur in Transition written by Abhradip Banerjee and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handloom Industry of Begampur in Transition: Technology, Disjuncture and Development provides an ethnographic description of the handloom industry of the Begampur region, Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. While explaining the process of transformation within the industry, Abhradip Banerjee explores the uneasy relationship between technology, disjuncture, and development that has impacted the lives of this particular group of artisans for more than two decades. The novelty of this book lies in Banerjee’s approach, which allowed him to perceive and analyze the process of transition within the handloom weaving tradition of Begampur region from a more inclusive perspective, miles away from the pitfall of gross “technological determinism.” The “sociotechnical approach allowed him to gauge, analyze, and incorporate several important but neglected dimensions of this transformation, which were otherwise missing in many historiographic or empirical accounts regarding the process of industrialization, deindustrialization, and class formation in India.

Book Synopsis The Economy of South Asia by : Tirthankar Roy
Download or read book The Economy of South Asia written by Tirthankar Roy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the historical roots of rapid economic growth in South Asia, with reference to politics, markets, resources, and the world economy. Roy posits that, after an initial slow period of growth between 1950 and the 1980s, the region has been growing rapidly and fast catching up with the world on average levels of living. Why did this turnaround happen? Does it matter? Is it sustainable? The author answers these questions by drawing connections, comparisons, and parallels between the five large countries in the region: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It shows why, despite differences in political experience between these countries, similarities in resources and markets could produce similar trajectories. Home to a fifth of the world’s population, South Asia’s transformation has the power to change the world. Most accounts of the process focus on individual nations, but by breaking out of that mould, Roy takes on the region as a whole, and delivers a radical new interpretation of why the economy of South Asia is changing so fast.

Book Synopsis The Economic Development of South Asia by : Prema-chandra Athukorala
Download or read book The Economic Development of South Asia written by Prema-chandra Athukorala and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hefty three-volume reference presents 94 previously published articles and extracts relevant to the economic development of the five major economies in South Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The editor provides a 12-page introduction explaining the selection process, which was aimed toward balanced subject and country coverage, but wound up with an "India" bias because of the abundance of material on that most populous and most studied country. Also the bulk of papers are country-specific, because there is a dearth of material presenting regional and intra-regional perspectives. Papers are arranged in themed sections, the first volume dealing with economic conditions at the time of independence, and subsequent evolution of economic development, policy, and the underlying political economy. Volume II covers agriculture and the rural economy, industrialization, and finance; the third volume deals with the external dimension of development, population dynamics, human resource development, and poverty and income distribution. Indexing in each volume is by contributor name only. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
