Book excerpt: By the turn of the twentieth century, academic nativism had taken root in elite American colleges—specifically, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant hegemony was endangered by new kinds of student, many of them Catholic and Jewish immigrants. The newcomers threatened to displace native-born Americans by raising academic standards and winning a disproportionate share of the scholarships. The Half-Opened Door analyzes the role of these institutions, casting light on their place in class structure and values in the United States. It details the origins, history, and demise of discriminatory admissions processes and depicts how the entrenched position of the upper class was successfully challenged. The educational, and hence economic, mobility of Catholics and Jews has shown other groups—for example, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Spanish-speaking Americans—not only the difficulties that these earlier aspirants had in overcoming class and ethnic barriers, but the fact that it can be done. One of the ironies of the history of higher education in the United States is the use of quotas by admissions committees. Restrictive measures were imposed on Jews because they were so successful, whereas benign quotas are currently used to encourage underrepresented minorities to enter colleges and professional schools. The competing claims of both the older and the newer minorities continue to be the subject of controversy, editorial comments, and court cases—and will be for years to come.

Alan takes us from his first expedition to Arctic Norway to active service in Malaya. Wounded in action, he left the Army and joined the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in the Antarctic, where he led the survey station in the South Orkneys. His passion for the Antarctic and its wildlife resonates in his account of his time down south.

Book excerpt: Three siblings, an extraordinary family, a lasting heritage—in the irresistible Silver Creek Ranch trilogy, they’ll fight for the land and the people they love. Everything has come easily to Reid Knowles, the middle son of a California ranching family. But his charmed life is suddenly complicated when his good friend and neighbor asks him to help run the winery next door. His neighbor’s niece, Mia Bodell, is in charge—and she has made it clear that she’d rather be roped to a steer than to Reid Knowles. Never one to back down from a challenge, Reid vows to win her trust. Her life marked by loss, Mia knows that nothing comes easily—love included. In high school, her heart was crushed by Reid, and even though years have passed, the hurt lingers. Mia is achingly aware that the teen heartthrob has matured into a devastatingly handsome playboy, and the budding winemaker refuses to let down her guard. But one taste of unbridled passion changes things. From Reid’s first intoxicating kiss to his unexpectedly tender seduction, Mia is swept into a passionate affair that could tear her heart to pieces . . . or give her everything she has ever wanted. Praise for Once Tasted “Fans of . . . alpha males will enjoy saddling up with this and adventurously explicit liaison full of intriguing details about winemaking.”—Publishers Weekly “With tension, heart and small-town details on every page, this is a genuinely engaging read that will have fans hungry for more.”—RT Book Reviews “Beautifully written . . . I would recommend this author to anyone.”—The Reading Cafe “Family, friends and small town living bring a lot of characters into the book and make it a great read. Just like grapes take time to grow and mature into something great so does the love story of Reid and Mia.”—Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews “Once Tasted is a really great romance and a great read for anybody.”—Fresh Fiction

Walter wasn't as rich as the Vanderbilts or the Rockefellers, but he had a commodity that served him well - his daughter. Dolly had learned her lessons at Madame Floushair's School for Young Women. What they hadn’t taught her was her life was her own, not her father’s. And it all would have stayed buried in the past, but then, Pat Walker Lewis has a way of inviting ghosts to tell her their stories, and the music box wouldn't let it rest. Someone wanted her to know what happens: When the Violets Bloom. This sequel to The Problem with Miracles takes you back to the Colton Family Mansion where sometimes the walls do talk.
