Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Groundwork of a System of Evangelical Lutheran Theology The reader will observe that this Groundwork is designed to be followed by a System of Evangelical Lutheran Theology. It was the object of the writer to contribute to the appropria tion anew of the great principle of the Lutheran Reformation, and to the apprehension of the Christian idea of God and the world, of religion and man, with the distinctness which is made practicable only by that great principle; and, thus, to prepare the way for the construction of a true system of Evangelical Lutheran Theology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrinal Theology of the Evangelical Lutheran Church: Verified From the Original Sources For twenty-three former editions of this translation have been widely used in Lutheran Seminaries. The aim of its compiler was of a purely historical character. It was not to afford a summary of the absolutely final definitions of Luth eran Theology, but to exhibit the teaching that had been current up to the time of the beginnings of Rationalism. As such, it does not grow obsolete. No public teacher in the Lutheran Church is qualified for his work without knowing the positions held by the leading Dogmaticians, even though he may often regard them open to criticism. The book re quires the living teacher to indicate the weaknesses, as well as the excellences of these revered authorities. Definitions in Theology are always to be interpreted historically. The roots of Biblical Theology are found in Chemnitz and the theologians who lived nearest the time of Luther; but a different method prevails in their successors. While occasionally giving a hint concerning the changes that are thus produced, Dr. Schmid does not make this a prominent part of his treatment. The second edition of this translation, published in 1889, aimed at a faithful reproduction of the Fifth Edition of the original, the last published in the life of its author, together with such additions from the same authorities from which Dr. Schmid had compiled as would render the work more service able to American students. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation of the 16th century was a complex and multifaceted political, social, cultural, and religious process. Most historians agree, however, that in the framework of this process it was the religious and theological efforts to reform and renew the late medieval church—decadent and irrelevant in many ways—that were the initiating forces that set a broad historical movement in motion. Among these reforming religious and theological forces, the Lutheran reform movement was the most important and influential one. It was the historical impact of the theological genius of the Wittenberg professor Martin Luther (1483-1546) that profoundly changed and shaped the face of Europe and beyond. Today, Lutheranism has become a worldwide communion of churches that stretches from Germany to Siberia, Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, and Surinam. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Lutheranism presents information on major theological issues, historical developments of Lutheranism worldwide, Lutheran ecumenical and missionary involvement and activities, worship and liturgy, spirituality, social ethics, inter-religious and Jewish relations, Lutheranism and the arts, theology, and important representatives of Lutheranism. This is done through a detailed chronology, an introductory essay, an appendix of Lutheran Churches, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Lutheranism.

Book excerpt: Richard Greenham was one of the most important and respected figures among the Elizabethan clergy. His contemporaries described him as the founder of a previously unknown pastoral art: the cure of cases of conscience. Despite his fame in the Elizabethan period as a model pastor, pioneer in reformed casuistry, and founder of one of the first rectory seminaries, scholars have made little use of his life and works in their study of Elizabethan religious life. This study restores Richard Greenham to the central place he held in the development of Elizabethan Reformed parochial ministry. The monograph-length introduction includes a biography, an analysis of his pastoral style, and a study of his approach to curing cases of conscience. The transcription of Rylands English Manuscript 524, cross-referenced with the published editions of the sayings, offers a useful source to scholars who wish to study the collecting and ’framing’ process of the humanist pedagogical tradition. The selection of early published works includes Greenham’s (unfinished) catechism, treatises on the Sabbath and marriage, and advice on reading scripture and educating children.

It is ideally suited for classroom and seminar use as well as research and independent study. With remarkable conciseness and clarity Lohse, shows how doctrinal development has occurred in the various periods of the Church's history from the first century to the present. He explores and discusses, one by one, the dogmas and doctrines that constitute the milestones in the story of the Church's effort to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ to each age. This Revised American Edition includes a new preface by the author, an account of the significance of the Second Vatican Council and alterations in the "For Further Reading" section to bring it up to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book offers a theistic approach to secular legal systems and demonstrates that these systems are neither agnostic nor atheist. Critical but succinct in its approach, this book focuses on an extensive range of liberal legal approaches to religious and moral issues, and subjects them to critical scrutiny from a secular perspective. Expertly written by a leading scholar, the author offers a rare combination of profundity of ideas and simplicity of expression. It is a ringing defense of the theistic conception of secular legal systems and an uncompromising attack on the agnostic and atheist conception.
